FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin ufr Vol. 70, No. 23 Wednesday, June 6, 1984 Cto&uc Food Science Now High Tech Food science is a combination of science, technology and engineering knowledge used to solve problems of food production, processing, packing, distribution, preparation, evaluation and use. A career in food science can be in many areas of endeavor. Food scientists can develop new foods and new ways to use them, such as convert- ing soybeans, fish meal or single cell proteins into nutritious and tasty foods. By applying knowledge of chemistry, microbiology, engineering and other sciences, they test foods for flavor, color, texture and nutrition. There are career opportunities with industry, education, government agencies and others. Food (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. James Christian, Head and Chairman of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture Division of Food Science, Food Science Building, Athens 30602.) science graduates are involved in research, development work, packaging, quality control, marketing, consulting, teaching, writing or enforcing state or government regulations and jobs dealing in foreign trade. Students can earn a B.S., M.S. or Ph.D. degree in food science at the University of Georgia. During the first two years basic science courses include chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, physics, mathematics and statistics. During the junior and senior years, students take most of their courses in food science. Students can select a science option if they wish to enter graduate or professional programs; a technology option to work in food industry and management; a food engineering option if they wish to work with food processing; or the option for work in fresh or processed meats. Other special areas of interest are available. Department of Agriculture for certification by June 15. Producer groups already certified will be asked for nominations of persons to fill two-year terms of nine members and their alternates whose terms expire at the end of 1984. Half of the membership on the board is replaced each year. The 18-riierftber board administers the produeersponsorecl Rational research and pto^otion program in Public Help Requested In Locating Exposed Birds An Alabama pet store owner who exhibited birds at the Georgia Caged Bird Society show held at the Atlanta State Farmer's Market May 5 and 6 has been found to have birds ill with Exotic Newcastle Disease, a highly virulent and contagious avian disease. Two birds which likely were exposed to the disease were sold to Georgia residents, and Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin is asking that persons who exhibited or purchased birds at the show to immediately contact the State Veterinarian's office. Pick Your Own Listing "There is a chance other birds were exposed to the disease. It is vital that we find and test any bird that might be a carrier," said Irvin. Georgia's billion dollar poultry industry could be threatened if poultry were exposed to carriers of the disease. Exotic or pet birds such as parrots, parakeets, canaries, cockatiels and macaws could be carriers of Exotic Newcastle, a virus spread through direct cointact with ^ ^ j^^^^Kiffl^^. ^ii^^^^^^^j^Mii^ Page 8 & 9 contagious birds, and indirectly by humans carrying the virus on their clothes, shoes, hands, etc. Irvin said his office will begin tracing the more than 1,000 birds which were exhibited at the show. "We have had no reports of ex- posure to our poultry industry, but we need to warn producers to be ex- tremely cautious not to expose (Continued on Page 16) The way a dairy cow moves leisurely along, you would not think that she had a job. But Georgia's 124,000 dairy cows produce around 128,000,000 pounds of milk a year, an annual average of 1030 pounds per cow. Although the dairy industry considers every month dairy month, June has been set aside to salute Ole Bossey and her friends and the 924 commercial dairy farms across Georgia who provide the state with a wholesome supply of milk and dairy products. Ag Census Indicates Farm Number Drop Georgia farms declined in numbers and decreased in size between 1978 and 1982, according to figures recently released in the 1982 Census of Agriculture. Preliminary reports indicate that the state had 49,627 farms in 1982 compared with 51,405 in 1978. Land in farms totaled 12.3 million acres, an average per farm of 248 acres, compared with 261 in 1978. Land from which crops were harvested was reported at 4.8 million acres. Irrigated acreage rose from 462,850 in 1978 to 575,159 in 1982. The Census reported that total sales of agriculture products (Continued on Page 14) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, June 6, 1984 we yet letteu Dear Editor; To everybody in the state of Georgia: Everybody don't have phones. Letters are much cheaper than a long distance call. Many sellers have missed responses by not putting your mailing address and even your zip code. I have had many letters returned "address unknown" when I would put your name and town on the envelope. Thanks. Mack Chambers Route 1, Box 43 Ailey, Georgia 30410 *** Dear Editor I grew up in the mountains in a little log cabin.
