FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 70, No. 20 Wednesday, May 16, 1984 BtOMHCH Officials Consider Establishing Ag Economics, Vital Farm Tool Agricultural economics applies economic science to farming and agribusiness. It's purpose is to understand the role and importance of agriculture and how to make it work better. Since we can't have all we want of everything, choices are necessary. Using micro-economics and macro- economics, those choices and the system we use in making them can be improved. Agricultural economists in Extension, research and teaching apply their analytical skills to improve everyday decisions. (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Stephen J. Brannen, Chairman of the University of Georgia Agriculture Economics Division, Conner Hall, Athens 30602.) The agricultural industry includes farming and agribusiness. Changes in farming foster growth in agribusiness. These economic linkages expand the role of agriculture in our everyday affairs. Our food and fiber system works well. But we can improve it. To do that, we must understand how economic forces affect it and in turn influence our well-being. Agricultural economics contributes to that understanding and its use. Agricultural economics is an expanding field of work in the University of Georgia. It transcends commodities and other academic disciplines to deal with making "wise" choices as individuals, institutions and society. Agricultural economics is always relevant and where the action is. Consequently, the jobs of agricultural economists are exciting and rewarding. Knowledge is being advanced and applied. Learning the dollars and sense of agriculture helps all of us. We invite your attention to it. New Facilities for State Fair In recent years, participation in both youth and professional livestock shows has increased substantially in Georgia, to the point where show size has outgrown existing facilities. State Representative Henry Reaves, Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin and others are hoping to do something about it. It is strawberry pickin' time in Georgia! Ruth Edwards (left) and Mrs. J. H. Edwards, MARKET BULLETIN readers from Lithonia, have gathered their fresh supply of berries from one of the state's largest strawberry patches. For more information, turn to page 7. Construction of a major livestock show and state fair facility has been talked about for years, but funding has been hard to come by. Recently, Reaves organized a 16-member committee to look into the possibility of reviving the idea and locating a major facility in middle Georgia. Initial thoughts are for the facility to be big enough to handle the multiple 4-H and Future Farmers of America shows that now must be held at different locations over several weeks. Three or four phases of construction ultimately would develop a facility that could handle all kinds of agricultural and other expositions. Pest Control Contracts Generate "The main purpose of having this kind of facility is to have a central place where the 4-H and FFA kids can show their animals." said Reaves. "But we also need a place in Georgia where we can hold a major state fair every year and that can be used during the rest of the year for other kinds of livestock, forestry and home and garden type shows." Dr. M. K. "Curly" Cook, head of Extension Animal Science with the University of Georgia, is serving as coordinator of the committee. He knows firsthand how frustrating it is not to have a place big enough for junior livestock shows having worked closely with these youth for nearly 20 years. "The junior livestock program has (Continued on Page 12) Questions from Ga. Consumers Questions regarding pest control contracts usually can be solved by a few minutes of careful reading. However, in many cases, the agreements are signed and filed away until a problem arises. The following information provides homeowners with answers to the most frequently voiced questions. The Georgia Department of Agriculture regulates the performance of pest control companies through periodic inspections. These checks insure that state treatment requirements and contract provisions are met. The owner also may request that applications made on his property be inspected. When evidence is found of improper treatment, the state notifies the company to complete the task. Additional questions may be directed to Ag Consumer Line at 1-800-282-5852 statewide, or 656-3645 in the metro Atlanta area. Do all contracts provide the same protection No. Contracts vary according to the type of pest to be treated and the applicator's liability. A service contract covers general household pests. A separate policy is issued for control of wood destroying organisms. What are wood destroying organisms? The term includes termites, powder post beetles, wood borers and wood fungi. Protection from one or many may be included in a contract. The type treatment depends upon the pest to be controlled. For example, the soil must be treated for termite control and the infested wood treated for powder post beetle or wood borer control. If the structure is heavily infested with powder post (Continued on Page 15) STATE OF GEORGIA STRUCTURAL PEST CONTROL COMMISSION THOMAS T. Although we are unable to do any big farming in real life, I do in my imagination each week when I receive and read every line of the MARKET BULLETIN. I am a semi-invalid and my husband is in poor health. So, I tried to think of some way I could contribute a little help. I'm unable to get out very much and try to find an outlet for the pillows I make. So now I am turning to my little farm paper. I advertise my pillows in the handicraft edition. Another thing I want to say: We have the greatest mailman. His name is Henry and if I have a package to mail he takes care of it.
