FARMERS & CONSUMERS 7ommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 70, No. 2 Wednesday, January 11, 1984 Thank Fanners For Food Supply I recently heard someone observe that America has the world's chubbiest poor people. That thought is worth pondering. In repeating the observation I do not intend to make light of the poverty problem in America. We do have the poor and hungry. In the world's most affluent nation one retired person whose food money runs out before the end of the month is one too many. One malnourished child is one too many. (Our guest columnist this week is William P. Flatt, Dean and Coordinator of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture, Athens 30602.) For most of the world, however, being poor means being hungry. Poor people are skinny in the rest of the world. But, in the United States reasonably priced food is so abundant and readily available that even our least affluent citizens are likely to be overweight. It is no secret that Americans spend the smallest proportion of their disposable income on food of any people on earth. How we got to this enviable position is a secret to many. Much of the credit must go to farmers as well as to our government leaders of the last century. The LandGrant Act, making possible the establishment of a college of agriculture in every state, was passed in 1862 during the administration of Abraham Lincoln. A generation later, in 1887, the Hatch Act paved the way for a network of state agricultural experiment stations most of them affiliated with the land-grant colleges of agriculture. The generation following saw the Smith-Lever Act passed in 1914. This legislation established our system of state extension services which have the responsibility of disseminating the (Continued on Page 12) Meetings Explain Severe Cold Weather Effects New Dairy Bill The Dairy and Tobacco Adjust- Farmers Throughout the State ment Act of 1983 was signed into law by President Reagan on Despite a recent warming trend, the effect of the cold of the last couple November 29, 1983. Both beef and dairy producers will feel the economic impact of short feed supplies, said Dr. Robert Stewart, an Extension animal scientist based in Tifton. "We have lost a significant amount of winter grazing, and that combined with a (Continued on Page 11) relatively short hay supply will put pressure on many cattle producers to make it through the winter," he said. Georgia Cotton Farmers Face The Crop Reporting Service said most winter grazing crops went dor- mant when the freeze hit, and Reduced Yields Across State Stewart reports that some young stands of rye and rye grass have been Although cotton no longer maintains its position as the "king" of Georgia's crops, the commodity continues to make an important contribution to the state's agricultural income. In 1982, cotton added $81,860,000 to Georgia's farm cash receipts, 2.5 percent of the total, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. (Continued on Page 11) Farm Land In the early part of the century, cotton truly was "king" in Georgia. For example, 2.7 million bales were harvested in 1911. Yields were drastically reduced in the early 1930's due to the boll weevil. While the weevil was devastating it persuaded the state to diversify rather than depend on a one-crop economy. Many cotton farmers experienced a good year in 1982. A record breaking 714 pounds of cotton per acre was produced the highest yield since records began in 1866. Despite a reduction in the number of acres harvested, these high yields boosted production to 235,000 bales, the largest crop since 1974. Forecasts indicate a significant decrease in yield and total production for Georgia's 1983 crop. Yields are expected to average 501 pounds per acre with a total production of 120,000 bales, 49 percent below the 1982 record yielding crop. In addition, United States cotton production is forecast at 7.62 million bales, 36 percent below 1982 production. Several factors contributed to the reduced cotton crop this year, according to Alien B. Fulford, Extension agronomist, Tifton. Freda McFarlane Post Office Box 773 Clayton, Georgia 30525 Dear Editor: For years I've enjoyed eating jams and jellies. But, could anyone tell me if there is actually that much difference between the two? Bill Davis Marietta, Georgia 30060 (Editor's Note: Jams and jellies are similar in that each is preserved using sugar. Both are jellied or partly jellied. Differences include the fruit used, ratio of ingredients, and methods of preparation. Jelly is made using fruit juice. It is clear and firm enough to hold its shape when removed from the jar. Jam is made from crushed fruit and is less firm.) If you have questions regarding this category, call Danielle Sims. No commercial, industrial or domestic employment permitted.
