FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 70, No. 1 Wednesday, January 4, 1984 ag consumer line ... Ag Research Helps Future What 1984 holds for U. S. agriculture depends upon three general circumstances the weather, the general economy (na- tional and international), and governmental ac- tion. These are three tough customers to try to handle. The first is largely out of our hands, the second looks more promising, at least within the U. S., and the third depends upon the outcome of the competing pressures applied to the state and federal political system. Our guest columnist this week is E. Broadus Browne, Director of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture Experiment Stations, 107 Conner Hall, Athens 30602.)_____ If we can assume the weather in 1984 will be more favorable for farming than in 1983, if the economy continues to improve and if government regulators don't shoot themselves and us in the foot, 1984 could be a good year for agriculture. In the long-run the outlook for agriculture will depend in large degree upon whether international peace and stability are achieved. Laying these general considerations aside, what is the immediate situation? What can the individual do to improve his chances for success in 1984 and beyond? First, one must take a hard look at what he is doing in terms of what is working and what is not. To do this one has to have complete records. Unfortunately, far too many don't have complete enough records upon which to base decisions. Second, seek the best advice and assistance available. That is where the College of Agriculture's Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service come in. These two units are designed specifically to provide the basic information you need to decide what to do, when and (Continued on Page 8) beans i nsuiied with the Federal 'Cjjoji Jristiranct!^.Corporation aj*e r^ininded they must give a final notice pi loss withia; 30 days after harvest.:i$ complete f^f eacit '^^^ pect to file' ft loss claim on soybeansv TM end of 1tb> ios u r a n e e p e rip e returned if requested. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless it is grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as McNair, Oasis, Coker, and Arthur may not be propagated for sale unless the grower is certified. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office. Page8 Grandpa's Garden *' Do not neglect caring for your holiday houseplants just because the yuletide season is over. When the blooms or bracts fade on your poinsettia, reduce watering and give the plant a rest. It will probably lose some leaves but this is normal. Cut the stems back to six inches above the soil, leaving three or four bud points on each stem. Water sparingly and soon new shoots will appear. Repot the poinsettia in a larger container with fresh soil and feed it every month with a balanced plant food. To keep the plant from becoming too tall, cut it back again to six inches in midsummer. Next fall, the plant will require 14 hours of darkness every day to bring the color back to the leaves. After your Christmas cactus finishes flowering, it can still be enjoyed as an attractive foliage plant. It needs semi-shade, frequent watering (usually once a week), and regular fertilizing. When the weather warms up in the spring, you can set the plant outdoors on a semi-shaded side of your home. Keep watered until fall and bring indoors before frost. To keep your plants from leaning way over to the light and to encourage them to branch out evenly all around, give the pots a quarter turn in the same direction every day. There are other state and federal agencies ready and able to help for the asking also. One of the reasons U.S. agriculture is the world's foremost is that it has been supported by an information generation and delivery system second to none. The Experiment Stations produce information; the Cooperative Extension Service delivers information. There are units of the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Stations strategically located throughout Georgia. The Cooperative Extension Service has offices in 157 of Georgia's 159 counties. This generation and delivery system is part of a nationwide network. Your best contact with this system whether you are a grower, homemaker or consumer, is your local county extension office. Use it. It is there for you. The Calhoun sale climaxes the end of the 14th annual bull test at the Northwest Georgia Experiment Sta- Makin' Do Folks who enjoy eating turnips or collards often do not enjoy the unpleasant odor that comes along with cooking them. Mrs. Jewell Freeman of Winder suggested washing a pecan (in the hull) and dropping it in the pot with the greens to reduce the unappealing smell. To find out if an egg is fresh, immerse it in a pan of cool salted water. If it rises to the surface, it is stale. But if it sinks, it is fresh. Clean soap residue from your glass shower doors with a sponge dampened in white vinegar. tion. The test, which is sponsored by the Georgia Cattlemen's Association, Georgia Cooperative Extension Service and the Experiment Station, began last August as purebred breeders from across the state delivered their top young herd sire prospects to the station. The bulls were put on feed and gain tested for 140 days. At the end of the test the bulls were evaluated for average daily gain, weight per day of age, frame size, and yearling weight. Only bulls that finish in the top two-thirds of the test are eligible for the sale. The bulls that sell are truly considered the "cream of the crop." The 1984 Calhoun bull sale will be held at the Northwest Georgia Experiment Station Sales Pavilion beginning at 12:30 p.m. Seventy bulls of eight different breeds will be featured. For more information about the test or sale contact Dr. M.K. Cook, Extension Animal Science Department, Athens 30602 or the Georgia Cattlemen's Association, 2966 Riverside Drive, Macon 31204. Citrus peels are a natural air freshener. Put them into a warm oven or toss them onto a wood fire. The citrus oils released by the heat will create a pleasant, tangy scent. During the cold winter months, you can warm up icy sheets by filling a plastic one-or two-quart-size bottle with hot water and popping it into the bed 10 minutes before you retire. Years ago, a mule and plow were the most complex machinery featured on many farms. But today, mechanization and high technology prevail. Farmers depend on com plicated machinery to feed their livestock, milk their cows, plant and harvest their crops and main tain their crops throughout the growing season. For this reason, in dividuals like Pete Garvey play a vital role in agriculture. Pete received a master's degree in ag engineering from the University of Georgia College of Agriculture in 1977. Today he operates his own ir rigation consulting firm. Pete ex plained, "I work with farmers, ir rigation dealers, sometimes irriga tion manufacturers and lawyers. I've also got a patent on a new method of applying chemicals to crops through an irrigation system using almost no water at all." Ag engineering is among 25 ma jors offered through the UGA Col lege of Agriculture.
