FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvm, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 69, No. 8 Wednesday, February 23, 1983 Tobacco Vote Corn Remains Important Crop Review Tornado Safety Rules It's time once again for Georgians to consider their preparations for the Spring severe storm season. Governor Toe Frank Harris has oroclaimed the week of February 27 through March 5 to be Tornado Preparedness Week in Georgia. The National Weather Service and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency urge Georgians to review the severe weather safety __ rules and participate in the fifth annual statewide tornado drill on Wednesday, March (Our guest columnist this week is Marvin R. Maddox, Warnings and Preparedness Meteorologist, National Weather Service Forecast Office, 1001 International Boulevard, Atlanta 30354.) 2. On that day the National Weather Service will issue a practice tornado watch for the entire state. A short time later a practice tornado warning will be issued for every county in Georgia. All the usual communications means will be used just as if the watch and warning were real. If there is a threat of actual severe weather on that day, the drill will be postponed to Friday, March 4. The purpose of the tornado drill is to give Georgians a chance to determine if they can receive a tornado warning and if they know what to do when a warning is issued or a tornado is sighted nearby. Every Georgian is asked to participate by noting the time the watch and warning were received and by considering the protective actions that should be taken during a real tornado warning. In general, the safest location in homes and small buildings is the basement or an interior room on the lowest level such as a closet or a bathroom. February 26 is the last day tobacco growers can vote on the Agricultural Since Colonial days, corn has been one of Georgia's most important field Commodity Commission for Tobacco referendum. "Our growers need to vote in this important referendum particularly since they are facing one of the most critical times in the history of fluecured tobacco production in the United States," Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said. Commodity Commission funds, supported by grower assessment, have helped provide increased research in disease, insect control, mechanization, and variety evaluation. In addition the Commission has helped promote Georgia tobacco in the export market and educational programs for tobacco growers. Until it was surpassed by soybeans several years ago, it was consistently the state's major row crop in terms of acreage harvested. In 1982, the acres of corn harvested for grain dropped 41 percent to only 815,000 acres, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. This, combined with a significant weakening in the average price, reduced the value of the state's corn crop by 12 percent to $173.2 million. Several factors contributed to this drastic drop in acreage, according to Dr. Frank Congleton, Extension agronomist. "Acreage declined because of poor yields, particularly for non-irrigated Season Trials Show Stockdogs in Action Do you really know what a stockdog should be able to do? If you're considering the purchase of a corn, produced during the previous two years," explained Congleton. "In addition, last year the prices for corn were weak." "Acreage production also was indirectly influenced by a substantial increase in wheat acreage," added Congleton. "Wheat was planted on land usually reserved for corn; by the time it was harvested, it was too late to plant corn." From an economic standpoint, soybeans provided a more attractive alternative than corn for Georgia farmers in 1982. "It wasn't so much that soybeans offered more money than corn," emphasized Congleton. "They simply required less cash outlay." Despite last year's severe reduction in acreage, Georgia corn farmers produced a record high yield of 85 bushels per acre, 20 bushels per acre higher than the I am getting ready to buy seeds for stockdog for your livestock opera- state's previous record yield. my garden. The contests are Soil Test Vital For Good Garden planned in honor of Agriculture Day; a day set aside to recognize the backbone of our nation's economy An annual soil test can determine the pH and fertilizer needs of your garden plot. Along with your hoe and rake, it serves as an important tool in producing a good garden. Soil pH is a measure of soil reaction or in old timers' terms whether or not the soil is sweet (alkaline) or by the temperature and moisture content of the soil. Therefore, nutrient levels change during the year. It is important to take samples at the same time each year so that results can be compared from year to year. Normal soil pH is at its lowest point during the late summer and agriculture. Agriculture Day contests will be judged by Senator Sam McGill, Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee and Representative Henry Reaves, Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee. Contest rules are as follows: sour (acid). A pH level below seven early fall and is more representative indicates acid soil and above seven of the pH during the growing season. STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST Essay 250 words or less on topic, "Agriculture: indicates alkaline soil; seven is a neutral level. Most vegetables grow best at a pH of six to 6.5 which is slightly acid. Be sure and take soil samples early enough to get the results back and apply needed lime and fertilizer It's Your Heartbeat, America." Essays can emphasize importance of agriculture in Georgia or focus on a particular crop. Open for two grade categories: Fifth to Eighth and Ninth to Twelfth grade students.
