FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 69 No. 5 Wednesday, February 2, 1983 9ld Di Vo-Ag Remains Vital Program From the founding of the Colony in 1773 to the present time, Georgia has always been an outstanding agricultural state. James Oglethorpe planned, more than a year previous to sailing for America, for a definite system of agricultural education with the colonists. His plans provided for three things: (1) to make immediate use of / I the agricultural practices of the Indians; (2) to establish an experimental farm; and (3) to provide special instructors for training in agriculture. Historians tell us that Oglethorpe relied heavily upon Tomochichi for Our guest columnist this week is Dr. I. A. Hence, he became the first vocational agriculture teacher in Georgia. The problems of agriculture have always held a place of major importance for the people of Georgia. In 1917, Congressman Dudley M. Hughes and Senator Hoke Smith, both Georgians, co-authored the well known Smith Hughes Act which provided federal assistance to all states in establishing vocational education in the public schools. The vocational agriculture programs were designed to prepare youth to enter farming and provide instruction for adults who were engaged in farming. The individual producer has little or no control over some things such as weather, product demand and price that influences profits. However, farmers do have control over many items of production cost. In determining the risk factors in- Farm Land Edition The spring farm land edition of the MARKET BULLETIN will be published March 9. Deadline for this issue is February 23. Please follow these guidelines when submitting an ad for publication in the farm land edition: *Only farm land may be advertised; land tracts must be at least five acres in size. "Indicate acreage and county where your property is located. There is a 30 word limit including name and address. volved in farming for a profit, the producer must make a careful analysis of resources required to produce a crop and the relative importance of each production item. The use of marginal land or other marginal resources creates a high risk for a profit, it is estimated that 500,000 acres of soybeans are grown on land that is marginal in one or more profit making factors. Optimum use and returns for certain input items are dependent upon other production input. For example, efficient use of fertilizer is dependent upon soil pH, soil quality, weed control, available water and others. This year March 21 has been designated Agriculture Day throughout the nation. Agriculture Day is set aside to recognize the nation's largest industry and to emphasize the theme, "Agriculture: It's Your Heartbeat, America." In observance of this special day, the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the Atlanta Farmers Club and the Georgia Agribusiness Council are sponsoring two contests. STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST When considering volume, Georgia is said to have one of the largest seed testing facilities in the nation. During this time of the year, hundreds of samples pour into the Department of Agriculture's seed lab each day from across the state. Seed Lab Asst. Director Ellen Finley looks over seed samples received for testing. The lab's staff will continue to handle large volumes of seed through April and May. Farmers, seed cleaning plants and others are urged to submit samples as early as possible in order to receive test results without delay. The procedure for submitting a sample for testing is outlined on page 12. * An essay of 250 words or less on the topic, "Agriculture: It's Your Heartbeat, America." For example, essays can emphasize the importance of agribusiness in Georgia or your community, your knowledge of a particular crop that is produced in Georgia or agriculture's link in the economy. Contest open for two grade categories: Fifth to Eighth grade and Ninth to Twelfth grade students. * Each essay must be accompanied by a statement from the student's teacher verifying the grade and listing the school's name and city. Absence of this statement will disqualify entry. * A $50 prize will be awarded the winner of each group and five "honorable mentions" will be selected. I am aware of the word limit, but an address would offer an option other than having to make a long distance call. Please encourage your advertisers to furnish this information. C. M. Brand 2068 Windy Hill Road Decatur, Georgia 30032 Dear Editor: My husband and I have made a goal in life to make something useful out of our lives together. We need desperately to be away from the city. We want to find a farm, a real farm, that we can live or board on and where we can do hard physical work for a small weekly salary. I was raised somewhat on a farm and I'll never forget, I was so happy! We do not want to waste our lives living in the city doing civilized work just to keep our utilities on. We are willing to give up all this civilized city stuff! We just need a good farm to work on. Please try and help us. We would really appreciate it. Jeri J. Benz 16 Lakeview Drive Riverdale, Georgia 30296 Dear Editor: I want to let you know how much I have enjoyed the MARKET BULLETIN. I was cleaning my basement about 12 days ago and a large piece of birch lumber fell on my right leg causing me to stay off my feet for 15 days. While set aside, I got out a two year supply of MARKET BULLETINS and cut out "Grandpa's Garden", "MakirT Do" tips, Georgia Cooking and other articles. I now have my own MARKET BULLETIN cook book and notebook that I can share with others. Thank you again for the BULLETIN. Mrs. William A. Soil samples for cotton and peanuts indicated that about 20 percent of all samples had a pH below 5.8. These samples also showed that about 15 percent of all samples for corn were low in phosphorus and potassium. Fifteen percent of the samples for soybeans showed low in phosphorous and 25 percent low in potassium. Low pH, phosphorus and potassium levels create marginal or no profit crops. Seed of proven genetic ability, seed with high germination and seed that will produce a vigorous, healthy plant should be used to produce a profit. Agricultural chemicals for weed and insect control should be careful ly considered for the specific job they are expected to perform. Pro blem pests should be identified and specific chemical and / or cultural practices should be used for their control. The shotgun approach to pest control usually reduces profits. Use those materials that are specifically required to control iden tified pests that are reducing yields. Many different systems of plan ting, cultivating and harvesting are available. No one system is best for all crops or farmers. Farmers should make a careful study of their in dividual problems, resources and management in selecting the most ef ficient system for their farm. Failure to do a job on time reduces farm profits. Time to plant, time to spray, time to water, time to harvest and time to sell are always of utmost importance in a profitable farm business. There can be many marginal pro duction factors that influence farm profits. Cutting corners on any crop production input usually reduces the opportunity for profits. When production money is limited, the producer should usually try to do a good job on the best land available. In some situations, high yields may not be the most profitable level of production. However, the risk of reducing farm profits is usual ly much greater when production in puts are reduced significantly. Farming for a profit is always a challenge. The Extension office in each county in Georgia can provide farmers with information that can be of help in using farm resources effi ciently in 1983. Vo-Ag Program (Continued from Page 1) As in 1733, agriculture is still Georgia's major industry, but has ex perienced tremendous changes dur ing this period. In a similar manner the instructional program in voca tional agriculture has changed from one with major emphasis upon preparing youth and adults for the occupation of farming to one which includes preparing individuals for entry level employment in occupa tions requiring knowledge and skills in horticulture, forestry, natural resources, agriculture supplies, pro cessing agriculture products, and agriculture mechanics. Today there are more than 350 vocational agriculture teachers in 225 high schools of the state. They have the responsibility of conducting the instructional programs for students in high school, young farmers and adults. A major compo nent of this overall responsibility is serving as advisor to the FFA Chapter and, in many cases, the Young Farmer Chapter. Opportunities for teaching voca tional agriculture have never been better. A national shortage of agriculture teachers, which extends to nearly every state means that a job will be waiting for those who prepare themselves for this challeng ing career. Anyone interested in a career in teaching may visit the University of Georgia and stop by the Agricultural Education Department, or you may write for more informa tion to: Dr. I. A. Dickerson, Head, Agricultural Education Department, Room 630, College of Education, University of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602. NUTRITIOUS EGGS Two eggs supply an average of 20 to 30 percent of the minimum daily requirements for protein, needed fat, and vitamins and one large egg has only 80 calories. Page 12 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, February 2, 1983 Grandpa's Garden According to folklore, the weather on Ground Hog Day forecasts weather for the following six weeks. The legend, based on a custom from Germany and Great Britain, states that the ground hog or woodchuck is supposed to wake up from his long winter sleep on February 2, stick his head out of his home and check things out. If the sun is shining, the ground hog reportedly is frightened by his shadow and returns to his cozy hole indicating six more weeks of winter weather. If it is cloudy and he doesn't see his shadow, he supposed ly stays out of his hole indicating that spring is just around the corner. Although the ground hog theory has not been confirmed by science, many folks continue to take this little critter seriously. Purple martins should begin ar riving in south Georgia early this month. Because of their reputation for controlling insects, the birds receive a warm welcome from many Georgians. If you do not already have homes established for these birds, you still have a little time to prepare. Natural martin gourds are advertised in the MARKET BULLETIN under the od dities section. In addition, you may order plastic martin gourds from Catherine Day, P.O. Box 3973 Hill Station, Augusta 30904. You do not have to wait until spring arrives to get "gardening fever." The following vegetables may be planted now: beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, collards, mustard, lettuce, onions, garden peas, snow peas, Irish potatoes, radishes and turnips. Check with your county Ex tension Agent for recommended varieties. Apply fertilizer around your pecan trees in late February. Take a soil test around the dripline (the place at which much of the water runs off the tree during rain) of your trees to determine fertilizer needs. If a soil test has not been taken, the Ex tension service recommends broad casting four pounds of a complete fertilizer such as 10-10-10 or 8-8-8 for each inch of trunk diameter measured four and one half feet above the soil level. Spread under the tree's dripline where most of the feeder roots are located. Your tree also may need zinc. If you have not had a soil test done to determine exact amounts, apply one pound of zinc sulfate for each young tree and three to five pounds for each large tree. Before you water your house plants, poke a few holes in the soil with a knitting needle to allow the water to penetrate the root ball suffi ciently. ag consumer line How to Submit Can you please identify this fungus that is in my lawn. Depending on your family's appetite for asparagus, 24 to 48 plants should provide a generous supply. Asparagus is susceptible to rust. For this reason, the rust resistant Mary Washington variety is recom mended. Asparagus plants prefer rich, well drained soil. Locate your patch near other perennial crops or on the edge of your garden so that the plants will crowns one and a half to two feet apart in the furrow and cover with three inches of topsoil. According to the Extension Ser vice, results will not be as spec tacular in extreme South Georgia where winters are not cold enough to suit asparagus. Do not cut asparagus spears dur ing the same season of planting. Wait until the second growing season, then cut only a few. During the third growing season, you should realize a full harvest.
