FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvm, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 69, No. 49 Btuee Choose a Ga. Christmas Tree The production of a quality Christmas tree in Georgia is now a reality. This has been made possible through the efforts of the Georgia Extension Service, the Georgia Experiment Stations, and the Georgia Christmas Tree Association. The Georgia Christmas Tree Association now boasts some 421 members which are engaged in some aspect of the Christmas tree industry. Our members include growers, retailers, equipment and chemical suppliers and others. Although there are no exact figures available, estimates indicate that 7,500,000 trees are now growing throughout Georgia which were planted to be harvested as Christmas trees. Approximately 2,000,000 of this total were planted in 1983. (Our guest columnist this week is Bruce Murphy, President of the Georgia Christmas Tree Association, Route 2, Coolidge 31738.)________________ Presently, estimates indicate that United States consumers purchased 30,000,000 natural trees in 1982, with approximately 800,000 of these purchased in Georgia. In 1982, approximately 300,000 trees were harvested in the state with the remaining trees being brought in from other states and Canada. Our Association would appreciate the support of fellow Georgians to our growing industry. This year when you select your Christmas tree, visit one of the many "choose and cut" operations located throughout the state, or ask for a local-grown (Continued on Page 10) What's Inside Friendship Letter Requests ...... page 2 Livestock Clip & Save ............. page 4 Georgia Cooking ...... page 5 Quilt Pattern.......... page 7 Features ........ page 10 & 11 Handicrafts ......... page 13 Bulletin Calendar..... page 15 Wednesday, December 7, 1983 Disaster Aid Approved 118 Counties Now Eligible Another ;3Si:-:iie6i'gia;:''Couiities' ':;h^;;^ej|!:;:iipj0rpved .for: federal ^Idreyr :^&te|8st:;: loans . to test assistance for the remaining 41 counties ^iftli Sitbinitted reports of drought damage will be rnade wifibiitt the next two weeks, fcfSiEJA officials said. . - : ;;.--. The convention is expected to attract over 400 cattlemen from around the state. The Assistant Secretary of Agriculture and the current president of the National Cattlemen's Association, C. W. McMillan, will be the keynote speaker at the opening session on Friday. The two-day meeting also will include business meetings, educational speakers and seminars, breed association meetings, Georgia Cowbell meetings, the annual banquet and ball and the crowning of the 1984 Miss Georgia Cattlemen Queen. "Our congressional delegation worked very closely with the agricultural community in Georgia to write the legislation so that it will work to the best advantage for both farmers and consumers," Irvin said. The dairy program changes had been disputed by representatives from dairy regions across the country. The point of conflict was that the surplus in midwestern states is drastically different from milk production in the southwest where overproduction has not caused the problems experienced in other parts of the country. The compromise legislation was met with approval by most of Georgia's dairymen. It basically does away with 50 cents of the $1 per hun- dred pounds assessment by pro- viding for a staged reduction in the (Continued on Page 10) from the mailing list for the MARKET BULLETIN unless we hear from you by December 16 To keep costs of production as low as possible, the MARKET BULLETIN is purging portions of its mailing list every month. Milk Commission Receives Approval Dairy farmers in Georgia have reaffirmed the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Milk {ACC Milk) for three additional years by a favorable vote of 89 percent, according to W. N. Peters of Forsyth, the newly elected Chairman of the Commission. The Agricultural Commodity Commission for Milk is credited as being the united voice of dairy farmers in Georgia and actively promotes the sale and use of milk and dairy products. Research projects carried out for the ACC Milk give dairy farmers the latest technical information to increase yields and minimize costs. Page 5 eorgia Cooking Although beef, chicken and pork make up a large portion of the meat and poultry diets of Georgians, lamb consumption is on the increase in the state, as well as, the southeast. There are approximately 7000 to 8000 sheep produced in Georgia and according to the Georgia Sheep and Wool Growers Association, the number of producers in the state has doubled in the past four years. These producers provide an excellent source for the direct purchase of lamb. By purchasing lamb from a Georgia producer, consumers are assured of getting a fresh product and in turn help stimulate the state's agricultural economy. Because of a lamb's small carcass size, consumers may find it appealing for both their budget and freezer space. According to the Georgia Sheep and Wool Growers Association on the average about 50 percent of the lamb's original weight will be retained after it is dressed. For example, a 110 pound live lamb will yield around 55 pounds of dressed meat and 46 pounds of usable meat (after the fat is trimmed). A recipe utilizing Georgia lamb is featured below. If you would like additional lamb recipes and a list of producers that sell lamb, send a self-addresed, stamped envelope to: Alice Curtis, Route 2, Box 145, Come* 30629. The beauty of this traditional holiday flower perhaps prompted someone to create a quilt pattern depicting its attractiveness. Although you probably will not have time to complete this quilt before this yuletide season begins, you will have a head start for next Christmas. In addition, even though the poinsettia usually is featured at Christmas, the red and green combination of this pattern makes it a pleasing design year round. This pattern is also appealing since the large unit blocks make it a quick project for those who enjoy quilting, yet do not have a great deal of time to spend with the craft. MATERIAL ESTIMATE 4 3/4 yards red for units A, B, & D 2 yards of green for units C & E 5 yards of white for background squares Each block requires: Red: 1 unit A 13 unit B 4 unit D Green: 4 unit C 8 unit E White: 1 18" square Finished quilt requires: Red: 20 unit A 260 unit B 80 unit D Green: 80 unit C 160 unit E White: 20 18" squares INSTRUCTIONS FOR PUTTING THE BLOCK TOGETHER Place unit A in the center of the white background square with 13 B units spaced evenly around it. Place one C unit in each corner with narrow end just under edge of B unit. The D units are placed at the ends of the C units and the E units on the left and right of the stems. Baste all units into place and stitch to the background by hand or by machine. Press the block when you are finished.
