FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 69, No. 44 Wednesday, November 2, 1983 Program Aids Rural Firemen The rural fire defense program of the Georgia Forestry Commission offers assistance to volunteer fire departments in the state. There are presently departments of this nature who have equipment on loan, and Cooperator's Agreements signed, in 145 counties in this state. The origination of the volunteer fire program began in the early 1960's as the Forestry Commission became more aware of the increasing number of forest fires, as well as other fire calls to which the Commission equipment and personnel responded. The Clark-McNary Act allowed state foresters to obtain government surplus equipment and utilize it in the suppression of forest, range, (Our guest columnist this week is Donald C. Freyer, Georgia Rural Fire Defense Program Coordinator, Georgia Forestry Corn1mission, Box 819, Macon 31298-4599.) open land and brush fires. The Georgia Forestry Commission further provided volunteer groups of firemen with this surplus equipment in the form of trucks, pumps, tanks, and whatever other items that could be obtained in order to provide them with fire suppression equipment. The Cooperative Agreements allowed the volunteers to obtain this equipment since their governing entities, be it a mayor, or a board of commissioners, signed for the equipment and allowed the Forestry Commission to cooperate with a duly recognized governing authority. As the departments became more numerous and the cooperation and assistance became stronger, it was recognized that these volunteers, like the Foresty Commission, were still not adequately equipped to satisfactorily suppress fires other than natural cover-type fires. To better enable these other type fires to be suppressed, the "fire knocker" was developed in 1975. This unit was designed to be mounted on any type military or civilian truck frame. Although the primary design features were for the (Continued on Page 12) Versatile Sweet Potatoes Supply Meetings Highlight Irrigation Research Two upcoming meetings in South Carolina and Georgia will feature various topics on irrigation. The Eastern States Regional Conference on Drip Irrigation is planned for December 11-13 at the Hyatt Hotel, Hilton Head, South Carolina. The conference program will highlight research activities, industry trends, and farmer experiences in drip irrigation. (Continued on Page 12) Important Vegetable Crop for Ga The versatile and nutritionally important Georgia sweet potato has long been known as one of the most complete foods in the vegetable kingdom. For approximately 100 years, between 1836 and 1936, Georgia was the leading sweet potato producing state, having at one time over 150,000 acres in pro- Soyb>eeaann C Coom mmmiissssiioonn 7 Receives Approval Georgia soybean growers have given overwhelming approval for the continuation of the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Soybeans. Of the eligible ballots returned 90 percent were for approval of continuing the commission efforts in research promotion and education for another three years. Members of the commission expressed their appreciation for the producers support and pledged to continue the commission programs for the benefit of Georgia soybean producers. They also reminded the producers that their ideas and input is very helpful in development of programs each year. This year, Georgia producers expect to harvest 5800 acres of sweet Potatoes, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. Production for 1983 is expected to reach nearly 64 million pounds for the state. "There is a good bit of equipment required for curing and long term storage and it becomes quite expensive," explains Darell Dunn, Extension County agent for Tift County, one of the leading sweet potato producing counties in the state. Sweet potato growers are beginning to harvest this year's crop now and most are hoping for better prices than those received from the 1982 harvest. Because of an oversupply in 1982, prices dropped considerably in some areas. Planted acreage, down this year as much as 20 percent in some areas due to fewer growers and hot, (Continued on Page 12) Choose Kerosene Grade To Suit Your Heater Georgia's top rodeo performers will rope, ride and wrestle their way to a state championship November 4-6 during the second annual Georgia Championship Finals at the Southeastern Arena in Unadilla. But before lighting the heater, consumers need to know there are different kinds, or grades, of kerosene and different brands of heaters use different grades of fuel. The most common grades of kerosene are No. 1-K and No. 2-K. These grades establish sulfur content. For No. 1-K the allowable sulfur content is set at not more than 0.04 percent by weight. Sulfur content for No. 2-K kerosene cannot exceed 0.3 percent by weight. All pumps and- containers for kerosene must display the words "1-K Kerosene" or "2-K Kerosene," or indicate the proper grade of fuel oil depending on the product dispensed. Consumers should make a point of checking for grade in (Continued on Page 12) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, November 2, 1983 we letteu Dear Editor: 7 I am writing concerning a "Makin' Do" tip which recently I appeared in the MARKET BULLETIN. It was suggested that in order to prevent pets from climbing on furniture, people 4 may tuck mothballs into furnishings. It was warned that mothballs be kept out of reach of children and pets. { Although this is likely to be effective in keeping pets off furniture, it may also present some unwanted health pro- I blems. Chronic inhalation of mothball fumes means chronic absorption of what are probably toxic substances. Most * mothballs contain toxic ingredients. Depending upon the particular agent, this may cause health problems for humans and pets. Also, placing mothballs in high density * areas greatly increases the possibility that a child or pet may eat one. Mothballs best serve their function in storage * areas which are not frequently visited. Even though pesky pets may cause some irritation to their * owners, it is best to avoid tucking mothballs into fur- * nishings. I hope this tip will be helpful in avoiding a health problem for your readers. I G. K. The MARKET BULLETIN has received many inquiries regarding our policy about advertising lawnmowers. Regrettably, space does not permit us to advertise lawnmowers in the BULLETIN. The only mowers which are permitted are those which are used for agricultural pur- poses, i.e., hay mowing, bushhogging, orchard / pasture mowing, etc. Mower attachments for garden tractors are allowed as well as any equipment which has a 44-inch cut or more. Attention Farm Machinery Advertisers Advertisers are now required to submit a statement with farm machinery notices. The statement should state that the equipment is owned by the advertiser and has been used on his or her individually owned or leased farm. Ads received without this statement will be returned to the advertiser. 600 Ford tractor, new rebuilt eng., new paint, exc. cond. $2800. L. L. Race, Colleg* Parfc. Ph. 404-767-1047 or 997-3776.
