FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture " "~7\ Market Bulletin Vol. 69 No. 4 Wednesday, January 26, 1983 Thomas Council Helps lilll^^ Educate Public The Georgia Council of Farmer Cooperatives is a state-wide trade organization of marketing, purchasing and service cooperatives. It was organized in 1937 and incorporated in 1968. Regular meetings were begun in 1953 and the first annual cooperative conference was held in 1956. Over the years the council has been involved in a number of educational activities. Since 1975, however, the primary activity has been its young co-op couples conference. This program has been successful and as a result other state councils have developed similar programs. (Our guest columnist this week is Thomas F. Lanier, President of the Georgia Council of Farmer Cooperatives, P.O. Box 747, Americus 31709.) A basic problem which continually confronts all cooperatives is member understanding and support. The council felt that the place to begin a program of member education was with young farmer members. Wives of young farmers are also involved because young farm wives of today play an important role in the farm business. Young farm couples who fall within the age group of 21-35 are eligible to be nominated by their local cooperative. An average of 30 couples attend each year. The highlight of the conference is the opportunity for these couples to interact with some of the key cooperative leaders in Georgia. This interaction provides an opportunity for the young couples to ask questions about their cooperatives and for cooperative leaders to find out what young farm couples are thinking so cooperatives can better serve their needs. Another important objective of the (Continued on Page 12) |j|ii|f|^ lllfllj^ Representatives of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) met last week in Atlanta to discuss the upcoming National Food and Agriculture Exposition. The show is scheduled for May 17-19, 1983, in the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. The show is sponsored by NASDA and the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It is the first show of national proportions ever held in the United States. An estimated 2000 foreign buyers are expected to attend the Exposition which is not open to U.S. buyers or the general public. Represented at the meeting last week were: Robert H. Lounsberry, Iowa; Jim Buck Ross, Mississippi, President of NASDA; Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin; George Dunsmore, Vermont; Jack Craig, Oklahoma; and Dominic Carney, Alaska. Not pictured Leonard Kunzman, Oregon; Keith Ellis, Washington; Howard Clark, New York; Doyle Conner, Florida; Terry Strueh, Indiana; LaVerne Ausman, Wisconsin; Frederic Winthrop Jr., Massachusetts; Mason Carbaugh, Virginia. Illllfi^ fjlfl^^ Georgia's Sheep Production This month many Georgia farmers will be asked to participate in the 1982 Census of Agriculture. To ensure complete coverage, response is required by law. Answers to the questions are confidential and may be seen ONLY by sworn census employees and may be used ONLY to tabulate county, state and national totals. Be sure to complete and return your form to the Census Bureau by FEBRUARY 15, 1983. The Agriculture Census has been taken periodically since 1840. It is the only source of uniform agricultural data for each of the nation's 3100 counties. The last census was taken in 1978. Currently on Upward Trend Although sheep are not a common sight in most Georgia pastures, there are more in the state than most people realize. Tom Huber, secretary of the Georgia Sheep and Wool Growers Associa- tion, estimates that there are 7000 to 8000 sheep scattered throughout the state. "Flocks in Georgia range from an average of 30 head up to two and three hundred head," he noted. "The 4-H and FFA lamb project PIK Offers Alternative For fuGtBeorsgi.da F_r3arrimH6ers ^^ also is growing in popularity," added Huber.
