FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 69, No. 36 Wednesday, September 7, 1983 Ttw Insurance for Next Year's Wheat 1 983 Apple Crop Not All Bad News For the second year in a row, a late spring freeze has damaged the fruit growing areas of North Georgia. This has reduced the size of this year's apple crop significantly. Georgia's most popular variety, the Red Delicious, was very heavily damaged and very few, if any, will be shipped from Georgia this year. While Georgia will not be shipping the usual volume of apples, this means good news for consumers here in the state. Following excellent pollinating conditions this spring, many of our late blooming varieties will be in good supply. We are anticipating a normal crop of Golden Delicious and Rome with the quality of these varieties being excellent. Today's consumers are searching for different flavors and multipurpose varieties. Our Georgia (Our guest columnist this week is Tim Mercier, Chairman, Georgia Apple Commission, Box 483, Blue Ridge 30513.) growers have noticed an upturn for demand for varieties other than the traditional favorites, Red and Golden Delicious. Such varieties grown here in the state include Rome, Winesap, Mutsu, Jonathan, Granny Smith and Arkansas Black, just to name a few. Apple growers in Georgia take pride in the fact that our apples are the first fresh apples to reach the market each year. Many large apple producing states use controlled atmosphere storage to stretch their apple marketing season to 12 or 13 months and for a combination of reasons it is sometimes difficult to find new crop apples in supermarkets at this time of year. This year Georgia growers will be more dependent on roadside sales. This presents an excellent opportunity for consumers here in Georgia to take advantage of a wide selection of varieties that are fresh and high in quality. Direct buying of apples from the orchard or farmers market usually results in a new savings to the consumer. Another important apple product available in Georgia is fresh apple (Continued on Page 11) During the recent State 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Iryin had the opportunity to meet with several top 4-H Club members. Shown (1-r) are Jeff Tyler, Wilkes County, 1982 State Cotton Boll winner; Amy Monroe, Dougherty County, 1984 state board member; Karen Durence, Evans County, 1983 State Cotton Boll Winner; and Otis Northington, Washington County, 1984 state board member. These young people were joined by more than 300 other 4-H'ers from all over Georgia to compete for honors in one of 48 projects including petroleum power, beef, health, photography, food preservation and consumer education. Georgia's state winners will have the opportunity to compete for national awards and scholarships at National 4-H Congress in Chicago this fall. Entry Deadline Set For Commodity Queen The Georgia "Miss Soya Beauty Contest" is planned for September 22, 8 p.m. in Wrens. Deadline for entry in the contest is September 10.
