FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 69, No. 33 Wednesday, August 17, 1983 Row RFD Remains Vital Service It was nearly 100 years ago that the first rural mail carrier began a journey which has expanded to include, nationwide, almost 34,000 rural carriers, 37,000 routes, and 2.4 million miles of daily travel. In Georgia alone, there are 578 routes which include more than 303,000 delivery sites and which cover more than 35,000 miles. In 1890, it was Georgia Senator Tom Watson who introduced a bill to appropriate funds for rural free delivery on an experimental basis. Our guest columnist this week is Ron Denny, Public Information Officer for the United States Post Office, 3900 Crown Road, Atlanta 30304.) The experiment began in 1896. At that time, some rural Georgians received their mail only once in two weeks. Few could afford to invest the time it took to go into town as a daily routine to check their mail. This new and, at first, controversial service of rural free delivery brought to the citizens in outlying areas daily newspaper publications, mail order catalogs, and, of course, news from loved ones. Rural Free Delivery met with such popularity that in 1902 it became a permanent service of the Post Office. For many Georgia farmers, the rural carrier was the only visual contact they had with the U.S. Government. For those farmers, the rural carrier's presence meant that the government had not forgotten its rural populace. As the carrier traveled over rough and muddy roads from farmhouse to farmhouse performing services and errands for the people on his route, he also brought daily news from town lessening isolation experienced by the farmers who lived so far away from neighbors and the town. It is just off 1-20 East near Warrenton, that Norwood Postmaster Betty Rogers boasts, "There is a state historical marker on Highway 278 between the two filling stations coming into town that recognizes Norwood as the first site of rural delivery." Rural delivery has expanded from the initial Norwood site (Continued on Page 12) o Take a Georgia Apple Tour 1-75 US-411 GA-5 o o /*/ o GA-127 Apple harvest is underway throughout Georgia and the bulk of the crop will be available during September and October. While many folks associate apples with north Georgia, as the map in- dicates, the production area extends to the middle section of the state. Although part of Georgia's crop was damaged by severe spring freezes, according to the apple commodity commission, there will be plenty of apples with a good selection of varieties. Use this map as a guide when look- ing for a source of fresh Georgia apples. Important Survey Tallies Ga. Horses In order to evaluate the number of horses and ponies in Georgia, the Georgia Department of Agriculture is conducting a survey and we need your help. Please fill out the survey form on page 7 of this week's MARKET BULLETIN and return to Horse Survey, P.O. Box 38313, Atlanta, Georgia 30334. The survey information is general in nature and will be helpful in determining the rapid growth of the horse industry in our state. If you own a horse, please take time to complete this questionnaire. It is not necessary for you to sign the questionnaire although it would be appreciated if you do so. All information will remain absolutely confidential; only totals will be published. Please return survey form by September 1, 1983. Legal Notice The Georgia Structural Pest Control Commission will consider the adoption of amended regulations concerning recertification of certified operators and the adoption of an official form to be used as a clearance letter. To obtain copies of the proposed amendments, contact Mr. Ron Conley, Room 324, Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia 30334 or call 656-3641 prior to September 12, 1983. Lespedza Potential Super Forage Option Researchers at the University of Georgia and Auburn University are developing new lines of low tannin sericea lespedeza to be used for livestock forage. The perennial legume is widely adapted to infertile, high-acid soils that cannot support the more popular forages such as alfalfa and clovers. Previously, lespedeza has not been considered a forage option because its feed value is low in comparison to (Continued on Page 12) U.S. Agricultural Crisis Gives Birth To Valuable Conservation Agency Georgia's soil and water conservation districts and state committee owe their existence to a natural disaster. The "Dust Bowl" of the early thirties moved the U.S. Congress to direct formation of the Soil Erosion Service in 1933. Two years later, in 1935, Public Law 46 directed the Secretary of Agriculture to establish the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) to coordinate badly needed erosion control opera- tions in the United States. The first efforts of the SCS were through the Civilian Conservation Corps. It was a worthwhile effort but the magnitude of the erosion problems called for more drastic measures. The USDA then developed the Standard Soil Conservation Districts Act in 1936 and President Franklin D. Roosevelt sent it to all the nation's governors with a strong recommen- dation for adoption. Georgia moved quickly to adopt a (Continued on Page 12) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, August 17, 1983 Dear Editor: I am 81 years old and I've been gardening off and on for about 20 years. Although I only have a half acre, I produce corn, beans, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, pepper, and several varieties of squash. Beans are one of my favorite vegetables. I stake them and tie a string from one stake to another so they can run. I had particularly good luck with my zucchini squash this year. I gave away part of my crop and preserved the rest. I also produced a zucchini that was 12-1/2 inches long and weighed 10 pounds. My secret for a successful garden is mixing my own fertilizer. I also plant every seed in a hill by hand. I dig a hole four inches across and four inches deep which gives plant roots plenty of room to grow. Gardening is not just a hobby for me. I can or freeze much of my summer harvest so that I will have a plentiful supply of "garden-fresh" vegetables year-round. Myctice Parris 1409 Briarwood Road, N.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30319 MORE ON PICK YOUR OWN Bruce Carter (Hall County) in Lula reports he has sweet corn, squash, tomatoes, and okra through September but you should call first to verify availability. Sweet potatoes and other fall crops will be available later. Mr. Carter is located between Gainesville and Cornelia off Ga. 365 on Tribble Rd, phone 869-3510. ttt- Farm employment If you have questions regarding this category, call Danielle Sims 656-3727.
