FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvm, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 69, NO. 30 Wednesday, July 27, 1983 Plant Analysis Determines Cattle Breed Noted for Size Chianina cattle are the oldest breed of cattle in Italy and probably one of the oldest in the world, dating back before the Roman Empire. They obtained their name from the Chianina Valley in the province of Tuscany in Cen- tral Italy, famous for Chianti grapes | and wine. Chia- ! nina (pronounced Key-a-nee-na) are the world's largest beef cattle with bulls reaching 4000 Ibs. and six feet in height. (Our guest columnist this week is Al Pannell, President of the Georgia Chianina Association, 1678 West Grantville Road, Grantville 30220.)____________ The first Chianina semen entered the U.S. in 1971 and on January 31, 1972 the first half-Chianina was born on U.S. soil. The American cattle scene has not been the same since. Any infusion of Chianina blood invaribly improves the growth rate of the calf over its mother. The greater the percentage of Chianina blood, the greater the growth rate. Since the first Chianina-cross steer competed in 1973, steers sired by Chianina bulls have won more state and national livestock expositions than any other breed. Chianina are highly intelligent, adapting well to a variety of management systems. They adapt well to both hot and cold climates, adverse terrain, and have a high tolerance to insects and disease. Above all else, Chianina offer an economic trait never before available to the U. S. beef industry genetic extreme. For many years soil testing was the only tool available to growers for deter- mining the fertilizer needs of pecans. i Plant analysis is more accurate than soil testing in determining the overall nutrient status and fertilizer needs of pecans. Through plant analysis a leaf sample can be easily analyzed for nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sulfur (S), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), boron (B), and zinc (Z). By examining the concentration of these nutrients in leaf tissue, a more balanced fertilizer program can be offered to growers. In the past few years, production costs have risen sharply, and it has Alternate production (on or off years) is common with pecans. Good management techniques including insect and disease control, adequate available moisture and a proper fertilization program will prevent alternate bearing. This month pecan producers can collect pecan leaves for analysis to more accurately determine the nutrient needs of their trees. Healthy, darkgreen leaves hanging on the tree up to the first freezing frost is the right step toward annual production. become necessary for pecan producers to cut costs whenever possi- ble. By using plant analysis, growers are able to apply only the nutrient and/or nutrients that are needed, rather than applying a complete fertilizer every year. This allows producers to maximize on their fer- tilizer investments. Although considerable reliance is placed upon plant analysis for determining the fertilizer needs of pecans, the use of soil testing is still stressed along with plant analysis. One of the primary reasons for this is that we are in a geographical region con- Harvest of Popular Apple Crop ducive to low soil pH. This, coupled with the fact that high rates of acid forming nitrogen In Early Stages Across Georgia fertilizers are applied to most groves, can result in rather marked decreases in soil pH. Consequently, soil pH should be monitored Apple harvesting has begun in central and northern Georgia, and some roadside markets already have opened, Commissioner of Agriculture Tom- (Continued on Page 12) my Irvin said last week. "Our apple commodity commission members tell me we'll have plenty of apples with a good selection of all varieties for roadside sales, but Georgia won't ship many because of the severe freeze damage," Irvin said. Red Delicious apples should appear in roadside markets by mid August and should be available (Continued on Page 12) An updated pick-your-own listing will be published in the MARKET BULLETIN on August 10.
