FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy frvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 69, No. 28 Wednesday, July 13, 1983 Cawd&i Eggs Boost Ag Economy As a Georgia egg producer, I see millions of eggs every year! It would be easy to take them for granted. But, when added to the millions of other eggs packed in Georgia every year, I they represent one of Georgia's largest cash farm | products. In 1982, cash ! receipts from the I sale of eggs totaled $303 million, and with 22 million hens laying 5.4 billion eggs, Georgia was second only to California in egg production. An industry of this size naturally has to have organizations representing it. One such group is the Georgia (Our guest columnist this week is Ralph Cavender, President of the Georgia Egg Association, C & C Farms, Inc., Claxton 30417.) Egg Association. Formed in 1955, the association is a non-profit, statewide trade organization composed of egg producers, hatcherymen, egg handlers, and industry related companies. Recognizing the need for a state marketing program, the association supported the necessary legislation for establishing the Georgia Egg Commission in 1961. Georgia egg producers have always been leaders throughout the state and at the national level, working with Georgia's Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, U. S. Secretary of Agriculture Block, and serving on the task forces that will hopefully bring the nation's egg industry out of its current economic slump. The association is holding its 22nd (Continued on Page 10) See Page 11 for Tobacco Market Schedule Agricultural Research Provides Survey Features A Harvest of Benefits for Ga Photo provided by UGA Ag. Communications Dept. Research at Georgia's experiment stations has come a long way since the days of this old mule-powered combine. Today, scientists are conducting over 400 different research projects. Studies include the search for alternate fuel sources for the future, as well as, the utilization of microprocessors on the farm. Although you may never come in direct contact with the University of Georgia College of Agriculture Experiment Stations, successful research from the state's nine centers touches the lives of Georgians daily. For almost a century, experiment station researchers have worked to develop more efficient production methods for food and fiber which ultimately benefit both the farmer and consumer. Agricultural research is not new to Georgia. Soon after James Oglethorpe founded the colony in 1733, he established a small experiment station near Savannah known as the Trustee's Garden. By 1740, 36 years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence, 10 acres of land had been transformed into experimental plots testing potential crops for production in Georgia. Here, early Georgians planted mulberry trees to feed silkworms, along with olive and citrus trees. Al- This is the second in a series of articles spotlighting Georgia's agricultural organizations. though these crops proved unsuccessful, apple and peach trees were among the fruits that flourished and remain important Georgia commodities. (Continued on Page 11) Pick-your-own Results from a recent survey may benefit Georgians marketing their produce through pick-your-own operations and help beginning operators improve their chances for success. Agricultural researchers at the UGA College of Agriculture Experiment Station in Griffin, surveyed pick-your-own businesses advertising in the MARKET BULLETIN in order to learn more about Georgia's operations. Results of the survey indicated that over 25 different commodities were involved in this marketing alternative. Peaches accounted for over half of the reported acreage. But, blueberries were the number one reported commodity when considering the (Continued on Page 12) llllll|||ii|||ili|lll ._.._,,.,. i^|||iiipM^|i^Mi^||||i|||^i siAl^i^iwll^iilHilllii Learn to Control Horticulture Colorful Segment Pine Bark Beetles Pine bark beetles are one of the biggest threats to pine trees in Georgia. But, losses often can be minimized if the landowner or homeowner is aware of external and internal signs. For this reason, pine bark beetle workshops are planned throughout the state to provide information on beetle identification and methods of control and prevention. The program is designed for land- (Continued on Page 12) of Ga.'s Diverse Agriculture When one thinks of Georgia agriculture, poultry and peanuts usually come to mind. But another industry, horticulture, has become one of Georgia's most rapidly growing agricultural endeavors. The commerical horticulture industry, which is approaching the $700 million mark, includes the production of floriculture crops, landscape plants such as trees and shrubs, and numerous vegetables and fruits, according to Dr. Maurice Ferree, head of Extension horticulture at the University of Georgia. Collectively, woody ornamental plants, grounds maintenance and floriculture crop production were worth $400 million (Continued on Page 12) Page 2 THE MA'RKET BULLETIN Wednesday, July f2l,''l'983 we yd letteu Dear Editor: I just wanted to share this picture with your readers. I will appreciate hearing from anyone who might have one in their possession or knows where I can purchase this machine. Ben Watson P. O. Box 985 Dublin, Georgia 31040 *** Dear Editor. I have found a way that you can get rid of that menacing "green devil," kudzu. Buy or rent one or more goats, depending on how big of an area the kudzu has covered. Pigs will work also, but they require more fencing. Surround the kudzu covered area with an electric fence and put an old bathtub or container inside to provide the goats with a water supply. I do not know how long it will take the goats to cure your kudzu problem, but they will sure get rid of it. Mrs. J. E. Eggs Boost Ag (Continued from Page 1) annual meeting July 19-20, in Atlanta. As a part of the educational program, U.S. Representative Lindsay Thomas, a member of the House Agriculture Commit tee, will be speaking. The use of computers in the egg in dustry will be discussed and consumer attitudes, marketing techniques, and pricing will be studied. More information may be obtained from the Georgia Egg Association, State Farmers' Market, Forest Park, Georgia 30050. Over the years, the Georgia Egg Association has worked to improve egg pro duction techniques and in spection laws that have pro vided consumers with a qua lity product -- a product that benefits the state's economy, while being nutritional and economical. A Georgia egg is one product that can be ver satile enough to cook in the fanciest dish at home, or to take along in its own con tainer on a picnic. As a Georgia egg producer, I am proud of our product; but I hope you'll join me in not taking Georgia eggs for granted. \A7edriesday, JufylX 1983 Agriculture[/ Research (Continued f rom Page 1) Georgia's present system of agricultural experiment stations dates back to 1888. The trustees of the landgrant University of Georgia approved the idea of an ex periment station shortly after Congress passed the Hatch Act granting each state $15,000 for funding. Athens was the first choice for the location of the first research station. But trustees were forced to look for a site elsewhere when residents opposed the idea. Seven other cities vied for the loca tion and the Spalding Coun ty bid was unanimously ac cepted in May 1889. The state's first official research station was located on the 123-acre Bates family farm just north of Griffin and has been in continuous opera tion since it was established. Despite physical and financial handicaps, the Georgia Station made con siderable progress. Resear chers studied several field crops and fertilizers and began work with tobacco, dairying and cheesemaking. By the late 1890's, the sta tion's bulletins were being distributed to nearly 10,000 Georgia farmers. Georgia's research facilities expanded significantly in November of 1919 with the establishment of the Coastal Plain Experi ment Station in Tifton. The base for the new station was a 206-acre tract donated to the state by Captain H. H. Tift. In 1950, the state gained its third major research center, the College Experiment Sta tion in Athens. This station was founded through the Board of Regents reorganiza tion program that coor dinated all state ag research programs under the College of Agriculture in Athens. These three major agricultural experiment sta tions continue to operate to day and are joined in research efforts by five branch stations located in Blairsville, Eatonton, Calhoun, Midville, Plains and the Extension research center in Attapulgus. These experiment stations are scattered throughout the state for a purpose. Georgia has such a variety of topographical and weather conditions, a set-up such as this allows research to take place in the environment and soil conditions ap plicable to certain regions. Today, Georgia's experi ment stations boast over 15,000 acres. Over 170 fulltime scientists along with a support staff of more than 600, are conducting some 400 research projects. The stations are funded primarily through state ap propriations along with gifts and grants, federal ap propriations and sales and services. Research conducted at the stations is invaluable to Georgians, according to Broadus Browne, director of the Georgia Agricultural Ex periment Stations. For exam ple, Browne said that for every dollar invested in agricultural research and education, the return ranges between 30 and 50 percent. Contributions made by Georgia experiment stations in cooperation with stations nationwide have played an important role in efficient agricultural productivity. For instance, one farm worker now provides food and fiber for nearly 80 peo ple compared with 26 people in 1960. Georgia experiment sta tions have made significant research contributions over the years. Among these in clude improved varieties of field crops, the development of forage crops and hay grasses, as well as turf grasses, new harvest machines, improved rations for livestock and poultry, and improved methods for weed, insect, and disease control. Research now places an emphasis on efficient resource management. Cur rent projects include embryo transfers in livestock, the good and bad effects of burn ing peanut oil in diesel engines, the effect of light on the survival rate of piglets, methods to double queen bee production and the use of microcomputers to manage irrigation systems. Future research projects will more than likely focus on the use of microprocessors and elec tronics on the farm. Most farmers receive in formation on new technology and discoveries of the experiment stations through their local county Extension office. In addi tion, thousands of people visit the stations during field days, short courses and con ferences. While most of the research may seem to be directed towards the farmer, the con sumer ultimately wins by having access to a plentiful, diverse, affordable supply of food and fiber. Valuable Timber The total value of Georgia's standing timber is $7.5 billion. The harvest in 1980 had a stumpage value of $300 million. Page 12 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, July 13, 1983 Grandpa's Garden t Place Orders Now For Tree Seedlings If your hydrangeas failed to bloom, it may be due to excessive shade, cold injury to the flower buds or incorrect pruning. In order to pro duce large flower heads, hydrangeas prefer moderate shade and adequate soil moisture. Pruning hydrangeas encourages new growth that produces next year's flowers. But you should only prune back longer branches after the flower heads begin to fade. Winter or spring pruning will remove potential flowers. A reader from Temple, Georgia, tired of destructive Japanese beetles, devised his own inexpensive trap. He writes, "Fill a large hub cap with half water and cover with motor oil. Place this about three feet above the ground. Hang a 60 watt light bulb about eight to 10 feet above the con tainer." "I have had good results with this trap by just leaving it on two or three hours at night," he explained. "The best time to operate it is just before dark." I have two good methods that I have used to rid my garden of birds, squirrels, bugs and worms," writes Mrs. C. W. Pilcher of Augusta. "For your garden, crush four large garlic buttons and boil slowly in one pint of water for 20 minutes. Cool and pour into a glass container and connect it to your hose. Spray the solution on your vegetables and flowers to get rid of worms and bugs." Mrs. Pilcher also suggested filling a black sock with cat litter and using rubber bands to make it look like a cat. "Wet the sock and place it in your fruit and nut trees and vineyards," she said. "The squirrels and birds cannot stand the scent of the litter." Orders for tree seedlings are now being accepted by the Georgia Forestry Commission for the fall and winter planting season. Seventeen species of trees are be ing grown in the state nurseries this year, with the greatest volume in genetically improved Loblolly and Slash pine. Order forms and prices for the trees may be obtained from Commission offices throughout the state or by writing the state head quarters at P. O. Box"819, Macon 31298. Forms also are available through the office of county agents, Soil Conservation Service and the Agricultural Conservation Program. Although approximately 114 million trees are being grown, the yield might not be large enough to meet the growing demands of Georgia's landowners. Buyers are urged to place orders early since they will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Shipments of the carefully packag ed trees will begin December 1 of this year and extend through March of 1984. Floriculture crops are primarily ag consumer line . . . built around the production of pot and bedding plants, and this, seg ment of floriculture has grown phenomenally in the past ten years. Floriculture has aided in the beautification of apartment com plexes, condominiums, office buildings and private residences throughout the state, says Bill Morrison, President of the Georgia Com mercial Flower Growers Association (GCFGA). Georgia also has more than 500 acres in greenhouse production, and the Flower Growers Association is committed to further improvement in that industry. The association helps growers produce higher quali ty plants more efficiently. The members are made up of growers, educators and allied tradesmen associated with the growth and sale of floriculture pro ducts. The association sponsors workshops throughout the state to keep members and others informed about their industry. Morrison hopes membership will grow to eventually include all Georgia flower growers. Georgia's horticulture industry currently includes 3,500 acres of field grown and container ornamen tal plants, 130,000 acres of pecans, 22,000 acres of peaches, 5,000 acres of apples and 3,000 acres of blueberries. Dr. C. B. Christian of Atlanta thought he was seeing double when he cracked open one of these eggs. But sure enough, two of his Araucana hens produced eggs containing a yolk and white along with another complete egg inside. Christian left one of the eggs intact and had it x-rayed to verify the internal egg. While this is not a first, it is an extremely rare occurrence, according to poultry experts.
