FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 69, No. 27 Wednesday, July 6, 1983 Group Promotes Ga. Blueberries The Georgia Blueberry Association was incorporated July 14, 1970, as a non-profit agricultural co-op. The purpose of the association is to produce a new and better blueberry, and to establish a processing and marketing organization. There are now 145 members who have joined the association. Acreage has increased from 50 to 1,200 acres located in 23 counties. In the beginning, the association basically served as an educational program for growers, assisting them in planting, cultivating and maintaining their blueberry fields. (Our guest columnist this week is John Foreman, President of the Georgia Blueberry Association, P.O. Box 1982, Alma 31510.) As acreage has grown, so has the association's overall concept of what is needed to best serve its members. As of this date, we focus on purchasing supplies for members, grading and packaging blueberries, and shipping berries. But above all, our goal is to find new markets and the best prices for our members' blueberries. We are now reaching toward new horizons in order to broaden the coop's marketing power. The association recently has purchased an "explosion puffing machine" and constructed facilities to house this machine and other equipment needed for the "explosion puffing" process. This process is not only for blueberries, but apples, pears, peaches, carrots, white potatoes and sweet potatoes as well. Sales contracts now are being made with buyers in the United States and foreign countries interested in purchasing these dried fruits and vegetables. The association has grown from a dream of 27 people (charter members) to a two million dollar ousiness. ag consumer line . . . When I brought gas the other day the pump showed $10.00, but the inside computer console showed $10.94. Please check this station. O.H. Augusta Our fuel inspector checked the station and found the regular pump with a broken glass and a malfunctioning computer. The pump was locked and a notice of violation was issued 'on the device. We appreciated your bringing this to our attention. (Continued on Page 12) Swine Fever Control Reaches Final Stages Final efforts to eradicate African swine fever are underway in Haiti. Haiti was the last foothold of the disease in the Caribbean, where it presented a threat to swine production throughout the western hemisphere. Previous outbreaks in Cuba and the Dominican Republic have been eradicated. In 1981, the Haitian government and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture, embarked on a campaign to eradicate African swine fever from Haiti. The (Continued on Page 12) V/i Photo provided by UGA Ag Communications Dept. Less than a decade ago, Georgia blueberry producers relied on hand labor to harvest their crop. Today, larger operations depend on mechanical harvesters to do the job. The mechanical harvester can pick more berries in 30 minutes than hand labor in ten hours, according to M. E. Smith of the Georgia Blueberry Association. The harvester has boosted the state's industry by persuading more farmers to consider blueberry production. Blueberry acreage is expanding, particularly in south Georgia. Approximately 300 acres (not all in full production) will be harvested this year, according to the Blueberry Association. Growers are expecting a good crop and harvest should be well underway by the end of this week. Last year, members of the Georgia Blueberry Association produced 1.3 million pounds of berries for the fresh and frozen market. iiiii|if l|f||I;l|^ Vaccinate Against Sleeping Sickness This time of year, vaccinating horses for sleeping sickness, Equine Encephalitis, should be an important concern. Last year, an epidemic in south Georgia killed 20 horses. Equine Encephalitis is caused by a virus transmitted by mosquitoes. The virus is a group A Arbovirus. Equine Encephalitis may be caused by a western strain or an eastern strain. The western strain occurs mostly west of Mississippi but has occurred in the southeastern United States. The eastern strain is generally found east of the Mississippi. The horse that is infected with the western strain only has a 50 percent chance of survival. Those infected with eastern only have a 10 percent chance of survival.
