FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvi'n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 69, No. 25 Wednesday, June 22, 1983 June is Dairy Month New Breed Gains Popularity in Ga. Beefmaster cattle were developed for a specific purpose to grow, reproduce, and make money under difficult conditions. From the first, they were bred and selected to per- form in the areas that were most im- portant to cattle- men weight, conformation, fer- tility, disposition, hardiness, and milk production. No attention was given to color, horns, hide, or other features which did not influence the actual practical value of the animal. The original Beefmaster cattle were developed during the early 1930's by Mr. Tom Lasater, using Brahman, Hereford, and Shorthorn (Our guest columnist this week is Carl Whitlock, Georgia Representative, Southeastern Beefmaster Breeders Association, 292 Ervin Coker Road, N.E., Rome 30161.) cattle in an extensive and carefully controlled crossbreeding program. After numerous crosses, a superior beef animal was produced that became known as Beefmaster. By 1937 Lasater felt he had achieved the consistency in characteristics he needed and he closed the herd. It is estimated that the present Beefmaster cattle carry slightly less than one-half Brahman blood and slightly more than one-fourth each of Hereford and Shorthorn breeding. In 1954 the United States Department of Agriculture recognized Beefmasters as a pure breed. In 1961 Beefmaster Breeders Universal was established in San Antonio, Texas. Beefmaster Breeders Universal organization consists of six satellites. The state of Georgia is in the southeastern satellite. At present they are 50 members in the state. The annual southeastern Beefmaster breeders association sale is held in April at Tifton. The Name Brand Sale will be held in Thomasville on June 28, 1983. (Continued on Page 12) "It's Milk for Me." is the 1983 theme selected for the annual celebration of June Dairy Month across the southeast. It is an ideal time to pause and reflect on the many contributions the dairy industry makes to the American way of life and to gain more knowledge about dairy products. The MARKET BULLETIN will spotlight the Georgia Department of Agriculture's role in the dairy industry in next week's edition. . harvest : ielayed in some eouiji due to wet fields. Plaftting of the soybean crop continued as weather permitted. Peanuts reached the blooming and pegging stages but are behind compared to last year. Heavy thrip infestation was reported in some areas. Tobacco improved last week with 50 percent rated fair and 42 percent rated good. Harvest began during the week in the southwest portion of the state. Corn and cotton continue to improve from last week, however, the apple condition ratings lowered. The peach crop rated 17 percent fair and 26 percent good. consumer line... Local Extension Office Serves What can I do about southern blight on my tomatoes? A.C. Doraville Southern blight is a fungus disease. The disease overwinters in the soil, so do hot plant tomatoes where tomatoes, beans or soybeans grew last year. Spray a fungicide like Maneb on the lower stems weekly. Do not keep the soil surface wet; let it dry between waterings. We are sending you a pamphlet on tomato diseases which you may find helpful. (Continued on Page 12) Both Rural and Urban Residents If you have a problem or question concerning gardening, landscaping, food preservation, farming, money management or a multitude of other topics, chances are your local Cooperative Extension Service can help you find the answer. The Cooperative Extension Service, created by the Smith Lever Act in 1914, is considered the educational arm of the United States Department of Agriculture and the off-campus arm of the UGA College of Agriculture. Its purpose is to relay Pick Your Own Update An updated pick-your-own listing will be published in the MARKET BULLETIN on July 13. If you were not included in our previous list, please send us information about your operation by June 29. Be sure to include directions, phone number, picking hours, restrictions and the time period your crop will be available. information, from specialists in areas ranging from agronomy to vet medicine, to the public. Traditionally, the Extension Service has been known for its educational assistance to farmers and rural residents. While the organization continues to advise farmerstjfcn (This is the first in a series of articles spotlighting agriculture-related organizations in Georgia.) what to do if worms are devouring their soybeans or in herd management practices, their range has expanded to meet the changing needs of Georgia citizens. Consumers, urban home owners, industry, and government agencies now look to the Extension service for advice. For example, microcomputers are becoming an essential part of everyday life in the home, on the farm and in the office. For this reason, the Extension Service is sponsoring an up- (Continued on Page 12) . Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, June 22, 1983 lettcu Want someone to cut hay in Alpharetta area. Page 12 Grandpa's Garden During warm, rainy spells, especially following dry weather periods, you may notice that your tomatoes begin cracking. The tomatoes simple expanded too quickly. The best way to avoid this problem is to supply steady moisture throughout the growing season. Insect experts are anticipating increased mosquito populations this summer as a result of our mild, damp winter. You should begin your fight against these pests now. Eliminate standing water from your yard and empty and wash bird baths at least once a week. You also should dump any standing water that may be found in flower pots, old tires, toys and other containers around your home. Some folks say that rabbits won't picnic in your garden if you surround it with a thick white rope resting on several white paint cans. Cutting thorny roses can be "sticky" business. Try holding the stem with a spring clothespin and save your fingers. Cannery Opens Soon (Continued from Page 1) Cooking for freezing 75
