FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 69, No. 21 Wednesday, May 25, 1983 Georgia Hosts First International Food Expo Last week, Georgia hosted the National Food and Agriculture Exposition, the first of its kind ever held in the United States. Sponsored by the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) in cooperation with the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Foreign Agricultural Service, Food Expo '83 was held exclusively for the benefit of international food buyers. The purpose of the show was to secure an additional $100 million in U. S. export business. Many dignitaries attended ceremonies which opened the three day event including (1-r) U. S. Secretary of Agriculture John Block, Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture Jim Buck Ross, NASDA president, Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, and Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young (1). Georgia Governor Joe Frank Harris (1-r) assisted Secretary Block and Commissioner Ross in the ribbon cutting ceremony (2). Secretary Block and Commissioner Irvin took the opportunity to visit many of the exhibits and stopped to taste a mouth-watering sample of fried, "farm-fed" catfish (3). Over 400 U.S. food exporters, representing all 50 states, displayed a variety of products during the Expo. For example, the Georgia Blueberry Association took the opportunity to promote dehydrated blueberries for shipping overseas (4). More than 1000 foreign buyers had the chance to sample new and (6) unique products never before exported from the United States. Food products such as popcorn, familiar to most Americans, were a new experience for buyers from Japan (5). Products on display at the Expo included everything from almonds to zucchini (6). Research Helps Plant Industry The horticulture department at the Coastal Plain experiment station, Tifton, was initiated in 1921 with one horticulturist, Mr. Otis J. Woodard. Today, the department (Continued on Page 12] Turpentine Distilling Planned at Agrirama The impact of the forest industries on the south nearly 100 years ago will be felt again this summer as the Georgia Agrirama reenacts the rarely-seen discharging of a woodfired turpentine still. Pick-your-own fruit and vegetable operations are gaining popularity with growers as well as consumers throughout Georgia. As the name suggests, the pick-your-own method of marketing is one in which the customer does his own harvesting in the field or orchard. These operations appeal to the customer's desire for quality and freshness, according to Dr. William Mizelle, Jr.' Extension marketing economist. Many customers also consider harvesting their own fruits and vegetables as a recreational activity or nostalgic experience for their family. "While prices are usually a consideration for customers, they (Continued on Page 12) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, May 25, 1983 we letttu /I Dear Editor. If anyone has any t information on where I can purchase this tool, please write me. Mrs. Margese Garrett Route 3, Box 287 Was*hin* gt*on, Georgia 30673 * Dear Editor: I would like to purchase a reasonably priced "sack sewer" in good condition. A "sack sewer" is used to sew the top of a sack together after it is filled. It usually is used to close sacks after livestock feed has been put in them. However, we are going to use it to sew sacks containing shavings to sell to hen houses for nests. Please contact me if you know where I can purchase such an item. Danny Roper Route 1, Box 124 Gainesville, Georgia 30501 *** Dear Editor: I want to express my thanks for the many years I have enjoyed the BULLETIN. When my eyes were better, I read every word about flowers, plants and needlework (now I must resort to a magnifying glass). I have availed myself of articles ordered and in selling my own specially crocheted afghans. Aside from the financial rewards, the many folks who call me are very pleasant. I also enjoy the delicious, practical recipes. Thanks for making an 80-year-old's life more pleasant and enjoyable. Thelma Beasley 1023 N. Hairston Road Apt.
