FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin VOL. 69, NO. 2 Wednesday, January 12, 1983 Export of Farm Commodities Dairies Forsee Million $ Losses Our state has nearly 1,000 dairy farmers who together have more than 135,000 cows producing about 1.5 billion pounds of milk annually. It sounds like a lot of milk, but Georgia dairies still don't produce enough milk to meet the yearround statewide demand for fluid milk. When we do have extra fluid milk, Georgia milk usually is shipped to our nearby neighbors in Florida, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina. In other parts of the country, however, the big dairy states have produced and continue to produce huge surpluses of milk and milk products which are far beyond the quantity needed in the marketplace. The Georgia Department of Agriculture has joined as a "friend of the court" in a lawsuit filed in Columbia, S. C. which seeks to stop U. S. Agriculture Secretary John Block from collecting a new price support assessment from dairy farmers. At press time, a temporary restraining order blocking collection of the assessment was in effect until Monday, January 10, at which time the South Carolina federal judge will rule upon issuing a preliminary injunction to halt the assessment. The federal government, through a system of price guarantees, has supported those surpluses and consequently, has nearly 14 billion pounds of butter, cheese and powdered milk in its storehouses, valued at $3 billion. On the one hand, we need those price guarantees to keep the market stable, but on the other, we don't need them to be taken advantage of to the point where the products clog the market. Georgia Department of Agriculture's International Trade Division, established in 1973 by Commissioner Tommy Irvin, has worked to promote and increase the export of the state's agricultural commodities since its existence. The division provides information on foreign businesses interested in Georgia's commodities, as well as promotes products through international trade shows. In 1981, export values of Georgia agricultural commodities reached an estimated $562 million, according to Robert Glover, Georgia Extension Service market development specialist.
