FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 69, No. 16 Wednesday, April 20, 1983 Kewcflt Homegrown Catfish Production Pork Producers Active in Ga. This year, 1983, marked the beginning of a new era for Georgia Pork Producers Association. The association adopted new bylaws that divided the state into 39 districts based on the number of hogs produced in the area. Producers in each of the 39 districts were invited to elect a producer to serve on the state board of directors. As a result, we now have producer representation from the entire state on our board of directors. We also have county or local pork producer associations formed. In some cases up to five counties have joined together to form a local pork producer association. (Our guest columnist this week is Kenneth Flanders, President of the Georgia Pork Producers, 2966 Riverside Drive, Suite 104, Macon 31210.) Our membership committee is in the process of conducting the most successful, best organized membership campaign in our organization's history. The committee on finance and budget reported new goals for the association in checkoff, membership, and Pork Chop Club participation. Our legislative committee has completed a program of activities that makes this organization politically active for the first time in its history. The committee planning our next three annual Georgia Pork Congresses have unveiled plans for our most ambitious show and program next year in Albany. Our awards and resolutions committee have reported plans for a new local association award in addition to a new award to be presented to Georgia's outstanding county Extension director. The committee on promotion and publicity has introduced some exciting new ways to promote and publicize our product in 1983 to include feeding pork chops to "Dooley's Dogs." You can produce homegrown catfish on fewer acres than you can grow many other crops. Georgia has some 70,000 privately owned ponds and lakes. With proper management, many of these ponds can be utilized for the production of catfish for the family table. Extension fisheries specialist, George culture, you must decide whether to raise catfish in combination with large mouth bass or bream or raise only catfish in the pond. Catfish in combination with bass and bream is the standard stocking recommendation for sport fishing ponds in Georgia. However, when restocking your pond with this com- bination, make sure that catfish are at least 10 inches, otherwise, the established bass population may consume them. The bass-bream-catfish combina- tion is limited to ponds larger than one surface acre. Smaller ponds are better suited for the production of channel catfish alone. You can produce from 400 to 1000 pounds of fish per acre each year when stocking just channel catfish in any size pond. The number of catfish Whether you catch them with a pole or a net, the harvest is usually (Continued on Page 12) Commodity Commissions Announce one of the most enjoyable aspects of home catfish production. Lewis says that with good management, you can produce 300 pounds of edible fish per surface acre a valuable supplement to the family food budget. Pond owners have two options for , producing catfish, open water culture and cage culture. The option selected should depend on the type and size of pond and how it is used. If a recreational fishery appeals to you, consider open water culture. This method particularly lends itself to shallow ponds with even bottoms free of obstructions. In addition, this method is less expensive than cage culture and not quite as time consuming. Should you choose open water NATIONAL CONSUMERS WEEK April 24-30 Consumers Day April 28 Second Level Balcony of the State Capitol 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Newly Appointed Board Members The ex-officio members of the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commissions recently announced the appointment of five new members to the state's Agricultural Commodity Commissions. They also announced the reappointment of 13 members whose previous three year terms had expired. Legal Notice Notice is hereby given that the Commissioner of Agriculture will consider the adoption of proposed modifications to Rules of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Entomology and Plant Industry Division, Chapter 40-4-15 entitled "Sweet Potato Weevil Quarantine" on May 9, 1983. It is proposed that the regulated areas be amended by adding portions of Appling County, Bacon County, Clinch County, Decatur County, Echols County, Grady County and Pierce County. Any party wishing to express an opinion on these changes may do so by contacting Ron Conley at 404-656-3641 or writing to him at the Department no later than May 6, 1983. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Chairman of the exofficio members said the commodity commissions were developed in Georgia from a movement in the 1960's to find a mechanism of "self help" for farmers. The commissions were established for marketing research, promotion, education and quality control. The commissions represent apples, cotton, eggs, milk, peaches, peanuts, soybeans, sweet potatoes and tobacco. Newly appointed members and their respective commissions include: Don Baker, Keysville and Ronnie Mathis, Clarkesville, APPLE; Jimmy Harrison, Thomson, PEACH; Armond Morris, Ocilla, PEANUT; Cleve Henderson, Blackshear, TOBACCO.
