FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Irt^ Vol. 69, No. 15 Wednesday, April 13, 1983 Bufck Feme Horticulture Thriving in Ga. Horticulture, in some form or fashion, touches nearly every Georgian everyday. From pecan pie to fresh peaches to Vidalia onions to the beautiful interior plantscapes in malls to the beautiful shrubs and trees we see in landscapes to your houseplants and gardens, horticulture is here in the Peach State. Georgia's commercial horticulture industry encompasses the production of floricultural crops, landscape plants such as trees, shrubs, ground covers and herbaceous perennials, fruits and pecans, and numerous vegetables. ______ (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Maurice E. Ferree, Head of the Extension Horticulture Department, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, Athens 30602.)______________ Our industry also includes one of the most rapidly growing segments of Georgia agriculture grounds maintenance. The beautiful apartment complexes, condominiums, commercial buildings, state build- ings such as our Capitol, and many private residences throughout Georgia are not pretty by accident. Floricultural crop production, which has experienced phenomenal growth during the past ten years, is primarily built around the production of pot plants and bedding plants. Nearly all of the poinsettias we see at Christmas, the pot mums year round, lilies at Easter, and bedding and vegetable transplants for sale today are produced in Georgia by Georgians. Ten years ago, many of them were imported from other states. The phenomenal growth is occurr- ing in container landscape plants and grounds maintenance. These two components of horticulture, coupled with floricultural crop pro(Continued on Page 12) NOTE In the March 16th issue, House Bill 230 was incorrectly listed as H. B. 280. Hog Production Important Part Of Georgia Livestock Industry ^UiHmUtiiiiiii S|i^|^^^^fi^^^P^K Illlllll^^ W^miXWi*MW3!^iKMlWi^m*^:iii!!S The Georgia Department of Agriculture continues to play a vital role in the eradication of brucellosis, a bacterial disease which is easily spread to cattle and other animals including swine. The Department's brucellosis lab receives an average of 2000 blood samples each day for testing. These samples are collected from farms, stockyards and sale barns by state and federal ag department field inspectors, meat inspectors and private veterinarians. Lab technician, Cathy Cowan, is shown preparing a bacterial culture to confirm a positive brucellosis test. As a precautionary measure, she must wear protective covering over her face and hands since the bacteria can be transmitted to humans. Hogs have been produced in Georgia since Colonial times. However, in the past 60 years, pork production has undergone drastic changes. For example, in 1920, more than 80 and marketed exceeded the number percent of the 310,000 farms in of hogs produced for home use. Georgia produced hogs and pigs. But Today, commercial hog produc- at that time, most pork was consum- tion is big business in Georgia. The ed on the farm where it was produc- enterprise contributed $289.5 ed. Soybean Referendum Hog production ranked fourth among Georgia's farm commodities Voting Dates Set The Agricultural Commodity Commission for Soybeans will hold its reaffirmation referendum from April 15 until midnight May 14, 1983. Soybean growers will be voting on reaf- in terms of income in 1981 and contributed 8.7 percent to agricultural cash receipts. Georgia's some 1,290,000 hogs obviously have an impact on the state's (Continued on Page 12) Meetings Highlight firmation of the Commission for an additional three years. This refer- endum is being held in accordance with Georgia Law requiring that Commodity Commissions be reaffirmed every three years. Soybean producers will receive ballots by mail at the beginning of the 30-day balloting period. If a qualified producer does not receive a ballot, that farmer may contact the Commodities Promotion Division, Georgia Department of Agriculture, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia 30334, telephone 404-656-3678 and request a ballot. To be reaffirmed, the Commission must receive a two-thirds favorable vote of those casting ballots in the referendum. Ag Labor Laws This year, new legislation has been enacted which will affect all agricultural employers and packing shed operators. This legislation replaces the "Farm Labor Contractor Registration Act" and is called the "Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act." In a continuing effort to keep growers informed of new laws and regulations which affect the agricultural community, the Georgia Department of Labor, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division, has set up a series of meetings over the state. A representative from the office of Wage and Hour will explain the law and how it affects you and your business. There will be a question and answer session for your conve- nience. Having never heard of it, I asked what it was. I was informed that it was a nonalcoholic drink made from a "start" of seeds given to a person by a neighbor or friend. Everyone I asked remembered the drink (older aunts, uncles, etc.) but none of them could remember what the "start" was made from. I was also told that some called it "near beer." One person thought that the start was made from the by-products of grinding sorghum to make molasses. Also, this start of seed supposedly multiplied in water giving you enough to share with a friend. I would appreciate any information any of your readers might have. Lynn Busbin Route 1, Box 180 Chula, Georgia 31733 Dear Editor: I would like to know if any of your readers know where I can find "choofers" or artichokes. I sure would love to have some, especially "choofers." They used to grow wild in my Dad's field and we enjoyed eating them. However, I haven't seen or heard of any since I grew up and married; I am now 77 years old. If anyone knows where I can find these items or how I can grow them myself please let me know.
