FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvm, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin VOL. 69, NO. 12 Wednesday, March 23, 1983 Gross Tetany Serious Threat Farmers Deserve Our Appreciation Most of us who read the MARKET BULLETIN and other agricultural publications know how important Georgia's farmers and agri- businesses are to every single city and county in the state. We may not remember that agriculture contributes over $3.3 billion in cash receipts annually, or that nearly 60 percent of all Georgians are employed in agriculture or agribusiness-related industries. But we know that without poultry, soybeans, peanuts, corn, wheat, tobacco and lots of other important commodities, Georgia and her people would not have prospered as they have. Certainly, now, during National Agricuture Week, is time to take note of the tremendous contributions of our farmers in Georgia and across the nation. Agriculture supplies not only our physical and financial well being, but it has been and remains the economic foundation of this country. Our farmers have suffered lately under heavy burdens of debt, surpluses, low commodity prices and dwindling export markets. And, of course, there is the constant challenge to raise public consciousness, to help people realize that farming is a business and that farmers need a decent income in order to produce the food we eat. We may complain about food prices, but Americans still spend far less of their income for food than does any other nation in the world. But some of our good fortune has come at the expense of our farmers. It just is not fair. We're all working for the best answer to providing good, nutritious food and quality fiber for Americans and the world, at prices everyone can afford. No one works harder at it than the farmer. (Continued on Page 12) Georgia's Beef Cattle Grass tetany, a metabolic disorder of beef cattle, continues to be a detrimental problem encountered by Georgia cattlemen. This serious, noninfectious disorder, caused by magnesium deficiencies, can result in a severe condition of cattle and even death. Although grass tetany can occur year-round, it is more prevalent in Georgia during the late winter and early spring (February to May). Many grass tetany cases are reported from cattle which have been grazing on oats, rye, and wheat, particularly when the first grass emerges, according to Georgia Department of Agriculture veterinarians. The exact cause of grass tetany is unknown. However, many contributing factors have been identified, according to the University of disorder seems to be most prominent in cows between their third and fifth lactation and in cows that are high milk producers, according to Extension animals scientists. Symptoms of grass tetany may come on suddenly or occur over a day or two. Cows will first show signs of depressed appetite and may appear to be stiff or sore. As the condition gets worse, they may experience chronic convulsions, overexcitement and paralysis and will eventually go down. Ag Day Contest Winners on page 12 Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. These factors include low soil magnesium levels, high nitrogen fertilization, grasses high in potassium, changing or inclement weather and inadequate energy intake. Older, nursing beef cows are most susceptible to tetany; the first few weeks following calving is the most critical period. In addition, the Learn How to Build Solar Greenhouses The Georgia Solar Coalition will present a free seminar on solar greenhouse operation, including raising plants and fish for food on March 30. The seminar is planned for 7:30 p.m. at the Standard Federal Savings and Loan building, 1149 Ponce de Leon near the corner of Briarcliff and Moreland. In addition, the Coalition will teach a more detailed course in the design and construction of solar greenhouses and sunspaces on April 16 and 17, however, a $45 fee is required. For more information concerning each of the seminars, call the Georgia Solar Coalition at 404-525-7657. When early symptoms develop, provide cows with a dry ration such as snapped corn or good quality hay. However, if severe signs develop, contact your veterinarian immediately. Cattlemen suspecting potential grass tetany problems may want to observe cattle several times a day in case symptoms develop. The most effective method for combat ting grass tetany is prevention. Since cattle cannot store magnesium in their bodies in large amounts, magnesium supplements must be provided year round, particularly before grazing in lush, spr- (Continued on Page 12) Handicraft Edition The special handicraft edition of the MARKET BULLETIN will be published on April 20. Deadline for notices is April 6. Regulations for handicrafts will be relaxed in this edition to include ornamental and gift items not regularly published. All notices should include an affidavit stating that the item was made by the individual advertiser and not purchased for resale. Livestock Manager Sentenced, Fined The manager of the Gainesville Livestock Market was sentenced last week on 65 counts of theft. Billy C. Robinson, who pleaded guilty, received concurrent sentences of three years in prison and 10 on probation on each felony count, as well as one $1,000 fine. Judge A. R. Kenyon ordered full restitution be paid at a rate of not less than $2,500 a year. Robinson was accused of theft by conversion is connection with sales of livestock at the auction barn. District Attorney Chris Walker said that Robinson put the money from the farmers' cattle sales into a personal account in Alabama instead of a custodial account, and said there is evidence that the defendant "kited" checks in an operation with several other individuals. Gardening Course "Home Gardening for Fun and Profit" will be offered by Reinhardt College in Waleska, April 12 and 14. This free course is limited to 25 participants, so early registration is recommended. Interested persons may register by calling the College at 404-479-1454.
