Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulleti,n Vol. 68, No.7 Wednesday, February 17, 1982 Clwck RUcaf.do. Key to Success The Georgia Palomino Association (C.P.A.), chartered in 1945, has been the parent equestrian unit from which other Georgia organizations have evolved including the Fulton County Sheriff's Posse and the Atlanta Shriners. More recently, the Peach State Palomino Association was formed to accommodate Palomino members who had to travel from across the state to participate in events. This association (Our guest columnist this week is Chuck Rinaldo, President of the Georgia Palomino Association, 2855 Cammie Wages Road, Dacula 30211.) was formed approximately ten years ago and most of its members are from the southern half of the state. (Continued on Page 12) The Popular Palomino Horses are sometimes grouped according to their color type instead of by breed. The Palomino belongs to such a group. Palomino owners have now developed an association for the horses representing them as a breed. The popular Palomino has a golden coat and a light blond or silvery mane and tail. Most of them have little or no white except on the face and on the legs below the hocks and knees. Palominos belong to almost every breed except the Thoroughbred. It is believed that Palominos originated in Spain. While this has not been documented, there is proof that the horses in the Western Hemisphere first arrived from Spain in the early sixteenth century. Through the years, the Palomino has become established as a "western type" horse popular on ranches, bridle paths and in the show ring. Enjoy Georgia Eggs As our state has grown and progressed through the years, so has its egg industry. Georgia is currently the second largest egg producing state in the nation with approximately 5.6 billion eggs produced per year. Egg production was the second largest cash farm product in 1980 with income from production of commercial table eggs totaling $303.5 million or 11.2 percent of Georgia's total cash farm receipts. Field Day Planned For Horse Lovers A free field day sponsored by the American Quarter Horse Breeders of Georgia will be February 27 at Wills Park in Alpharetta. The program, beginning at 8:30 a.m., will include demonstrations, a horse judging contest, and a stallion service auction. Demonstrations will include programs on selecting and showing halter horses, pleasure horses, and reining horses. All youth and adult horse enthusiasts are invited to attend. For further information, contact Hank Holderfield at 404-979-0247 or Charlie Hutton at 404-542-2584. Stockdog Trials The second annual Georgia championship stockdog trials will be held February 27 and 28 at the Frank Fountain family farm in Mcintyre. The competition, beginning at 8 a.m. each day, is an open trial for all working stockdog breeds. The trial site is located on Snow Hill Church Road, five miles east of Gordon and 30 miles east of Macon. For more information concerning the event, write or call Carl McDaniel, Route 1, Box 289A, Mcintyre 31054, 912-946-2517. Observe Importance of Trees By Celebrating Arbor Day Alth.ough two out of every three acres of our state is covered in trees, many Georgtans may not be aware of their importance and value. Licenses Required for Exotic Birds Starting January 1, 1982, all persons, corporations or businesses who sell exotic or pet birds must be licensed and keep accurate records of sales transactions. Dealers are allowed 60 days to obtain a valid bird dealers license. Write the Georgia Department of Agriculture, State Veterinarian's Office, Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia 30334. Please enclose your complete name and address and a check made payable to the Georgia Department of Agriculture for $10.00 for a retail license or $25.00 for a wholesale license. Licenses are good until March 1 of each year. Acting as a bird dealer without a license constitutes a misdemeanor. Poultry dealers (chickens, geese, ducks, turkeys, quail or other domesticated birds used for food or production purposes) are not covered by this Act. Forestry is big business in Georgia. The state has been the nation's leading pulpwood producer for 15 consecutive years. Georgia is also the top producer of gum naval stores providing over 80 percent of the national supply. The industry generated over $5.3 billion dollars to the state's economy in 1980. In the past ten years, Georgia forests have managed to supply the timber needs of almost 15 million people - 11 million more than the population of the state. Trees are not only big business, they conserve our natural resources as well. They act as windbreaks to keep top soil from blowing away and their roots help. store water in the ground. Forests also provide a haven for Georgia's abundant wildlife. For the homeowner, a well-placed, healthy shade tree can add beauty and shade to your home and increase its value. Because of the importance of the forest industry and trees to our state, it is appropriate that Georgians observe Arbor Day, February 19. The third Friday in February is set (Continued on Page 12) PAGE 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, February 17, 1982 Dear Editor: We grow and sell many varieties of grape vines and are certified Georgia growers. Marigolds, petunias, zinnias and impatiens make beautiful winter houseplants which will help brighten your home. Select varieties that do not exceed twelve inches in height to avoid producing scraggly tall plants. Sow seed in a soil mixture consisting of equal parts of potting soil, peat moss and vermiculite. Most any type of container will do as long as it has drainage holes at the bottom. Seedlings are ready to transfer into their own four inch pot when four leaves have developed. To encourage your plants to bloom, make sure they receive sufficient light. Place them on a window sill with a southern exposure or under fluorescent lights (eight to ten inches above plants). You can now begin sowing seed such as pepper, tomatoes, eggplant indoors. When warm weather arrives, they should be large enough to transfer outdoors. As with flowers, you can sow your seeds in most any type of container. One economical suggestion is to transform yesterday's styrofoam coffee cup into today's planting container. Be sure and poke holes in the bottom of the cup to allow for good drainage. Of course, you should label your seeds for identification purposes. A styrofoam tray {the kind meat comes on) can be cut into smaller strips, labeled, and used to identify your seedlings. As president of the Georgia Palomino Association, I have tried to bring the Georgia Palomino Associa- tion and the Peach State Association closer together by encouraging par- ticipation in each other's equestrian events. The Georgia association hosted Peach State members and other Palomino members from 12 states at last year's November Classic in Dewey Henderson's Atlanta Auc- tion's Inc., College Park. The 1981 November Classic, an "A" rated show, included over 75 horses and was the largest Palomino show since the Thanksgiving Classic two years ago. This multi-judged, two day show, included both stock and pleasure classes for all types of Palominos. Eighty classes were held each day and it was the largest Palomino show ever put on by C.P.A. As a plus, four out of five cir- cuit championships in the November Classic were captured by Georgians. The success of the November Classic was a cooperative effort be tween C.P.A. along with the support of the Peach State Association. For the first time, Palomino owners did not have to travel thousands of miles to participate in a show with both types and classes for stock and pleasure type horses. Hopefully, the associations can host an even bigger Classic this year. The most important factor in keep~ ing our association going is to stimulate your interest in Palomino horses. There are many Palomino horses across the state that are not registered or owners with registered Palominos that are not active. If you are one of the above or just interested in the Palomino breed, our next meeting will be February 25. Dr. Paul Hoffman from the University of Georgia will be conducting a clinic on equine breeding and reproduc- tion. For more information call me at 404-962-0900. Observe Importance of Trees {Continued from Page 1} aside each year as Arbor Day in Georgia - a day for planting trees. While other states observe the holiday anytime from January to December, this month was selected for Georgia since it is an ideal time to establish new trees. Because trees are so permanent and not easily transplanted, planning before planting is essential. Consider the size of a tree's roots and branches when it reaches maturity. Trees that grow too large should not be planted within 60 feet of buildings. Do not plant trees beneath utility lines. Make sure they are a safe distance from sewt3r pipes, cesspools, sidewalks, and driveways to avoid future damage to the tree and to your property. necessary, to allow the roots to spread without crowding. Remove any grass within a three foot circular area. Plant the tree at the same depth as it stood in the nursery without crowding roots. Partially fill the hole and pack soil firmly around the lower roots. Shovel in the remaining soil and pack firmly. Construct a water-holding basin around the tree and water thoroughly. Pour protective mulch, such as wood chips, pine straw, or peat moss around the base after .water has soaked in. My office has received several calls from con- sumers about fruit pectin being out- of-date at a local store. Can one of your inspectors look into this matter? D.C., Columbus Fourteen out-of-date packages of fruit pectin were in stock. The store manager destroyed this product in the presence of our inspector. The manager expressed disappointment that the customer did not contact him so that he could make restitu- tion. Our inspector urged the manager to check product dates more carefully in the future. *** What are "meat byproducts"? M.J., Atlanta Meat byproducts (sometimes known as "variety meats") refer to the edible and wholesome parts of cattle, sheep, swine and goats, other than skeletal meat. Some ex- amples of meat byproducts are the tongue, heart, and liver. Whenever byproducts are added to foods, each specific byproduct must be named in the list of ingredients. *** Why do nutrition labels show amounts in grams rather than ounces? w.c., Athens Nutrition labels show amounts in grams rather than ounces because grams are a smaller unit of measure and many food components are pre- sent in small amounts. The following guide may help you find nutri- = tion labels: 1 Pound 454 grams (g.) = 1 ounce 28 grams = 1 gram 1,000 milligrams (mg.) 1 milligram = 1,000 micrograms (meg.) Wednesday, February 17, 1~!J2 Makin' Do Your lettuce will stay fresh and will not brown as quickly if you remove the core before storing. To do this, hit the core sharply against the counter top and twist out. Lettuce will stay crisper and greener by storing it in a container or plastic bag lined with paper towels to absorb moisture. Instead of buying commercial floor cleaners -- mix your own. Combine 112 cup bleach, 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar, 1/4 cup washing soda and one gallon of warm water. A down comforter will often become lumpy after it has been washed and dried. To remedy this problem, a Mableton reader suggests placing a pair of clean tennis shoes in the dryer (on a low temperature setting) to help work out the lumps. When icing a cake that has been baked in a tube pan, there is always the problem of how to cover the hole in the middle. Calvin Hortman of Roberta has a solution for the problem. Simply place a graham cracker over the hole and ice as usual. Store your dried herbs and spices in a cool, dark place or they will rapidly lose their color and flavor. Although often convenient, never store them over the kitchen stove where they are heated when the stove is in use. For a self-supporting, disposable trash container, Frank Wansley of Elberton suggests folding down the top of a large grocery bag.
