FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 68, No. 50 Smtett HarvUt, tyi. Pest Control Vital for Ga. Pests such as insects, plants diseases, and weeds are a problem not only for the farmer but for each and every Georgia citizen. Damage from pests on the farm is reflected in the cost, availa bility and quality of our food, cloth ing and shelter. As agriculture is a major in dustry within the state, pests have a tremendous im pact on Georgia's economy. Pests influence us directly when they at tack our home vegetable gardens, lawns and ornamentals. Other pests (Our guest columnist this week is Emmett D. Harris, Jr., Pesticide Coor dinator of the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, Athens 30602.) damage our homes and objects within them. Still others attack us and our pets and are often capable of spreading noxious diseases. University of Georgia pest control scientists have estimated that pests cost Georgians at least 981 million dollars per year. If effective pest con trol methods were not available, the cost would be much greater. Our main weapons in combatting pests are still chemical pesticides such as insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides. In some instances alter nate methods of pest control are available but they may be less effec tive, too slow, too costly and too laborious. We also should remember that some non-chemical methods which are suitable in small plantings are impractical, too expensive or im possible in commercial agriculture. There is some risk in the use of pesticides but it is not nearly so great as some people would have us believe. When pesticides are used correctly according to strict federal and state regulations the risk is many times less than not using them and often less than using some of the alternative methods of pest control. (Continued on Page 12) Wednesday, December 15, 1982 Georgia had a bumper crop of national 4-H winners this year. At the re cent 61st National 4-H Congress in Chicago, 18 Georgia 4-H members were named as winners -- more than any other state in the nation and a record for Georgia. The 1982 Georgia national winners are as follows: (1-r) How 1: Gena Paulk, Effingham Co., Food & Nutrition; Nan Bunn, Henry Co., Public Speaking; Lisa Wiggins, Washington Co., Leadership; Joyce Brown, Cobb Co., Dog Care and Training; Jenifer Embry, Bibb Co., Fashion Revue; flow 2: Kim Murphy, Richmond Co., Citizenship; Kathy Morris, Henry Co., Health; Leigh Powell, Lowndes, Dairy Foods; Leigh Moore, Floyd Co., Bicycle; Conda Shiflett, Floyd Co., Electric Energy; Jeff Tyler, Wilkes Co., Automotive; Row 3: Jeff Wagner, Newton Co., Safety; Robbie Wylie, Ware Co., Wood Science; Anne Authur, Terrell Co., Entomology; David Dekle, Jefferson Co., Forestry; and Gilbert Barrett, Habersham Co., Agricultural Careers. (Not pictured, Bob Nash, Upson Co., Outstanding 4-H Alumni.) Beware of Ultrasonic Pest Control Devices Homeowners should beware of ultrasonic pest control devices which make chains that sound too good to be true. They may be just that -- too good to be true. During the past year, the Georgia Department of Agriculture has received numerous inquiries concer ning ultrasonic units used to control insects and other pests. These devices claim control of pests through the use of sound waves, which are beyond the range of human hearing. They are pro moted as affecting all frequencies on which pests communicate and then driving them from the protected area. All data currently available on ultrasonic pest control devices in dicates that they do not live up to their claims of controlling or repell ing insects. A study conducted by the Depart ment of Entomology at the Universi ty of Nebraska stated that ". . . it ap pears that sonic and ultrasonic (Continued on Page 12) On the Farm Front USDA has announced how it will collect the 50 cents per hundredweight from the pro ceeds of milk marketed by the nation's dairy farmers. Under Congressional man date of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1982, the money will go to the Commodity Credit Corpora tion (CCC) to offset part of the cost of dairy product pur chases CCC makes under the dairy support program. The procedures are: 1) Those who pay dairy farmers for their milk will make the deductions and pay CCC. Dairymen who sell their milk directly to con sumers must make their own payments to CCC; 2) Payments are due on the date final payment is made to the dairy farmer; 3) Those responsible for making payments will be required to file a brief report to USDA (Continued on Page 11) Popular Backyard Pecan Trees Provide Food, Beauty and Shade Not only is this the season for pecan harvest in Georgia, it is also time to establish new trees in your yard or home orchard. Pecan trees can be planted from now until February. Horse Edition The special horse edition of the Market Bulletin is coming January 12. This issue will include notices for horse shows scheduled for January, February and March as well as at stud notices, boarding facilities and miscellaneous equine equipment. If your organization has a show scheduled for January, February or March, submit your announcement, not to exceed 30 words, by January 5. Deadline for at stud, boar ding and miscellaneous equine equipment notices is also January 5. Most of Georgia is fortunate to have excellent conditions for pecan production. In fact, the state led the nation in production in 1981. Pecans are recommended for home planting in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont areas of the state. However, specialists do not recommend establishing trees in the north Georgia mountain area. Before planting trees, you should first select the appropriate variety. While there are many varieties available, only those listed on the chart on page 12 are recommended for backyard planting. This is because most homeowners do not have the the necessary equipment to spray for the control of destructive diseases, particularly scab. There are scab resistant varieties available (Continued on Page 12) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, December 15, 1982 Dear Editor: I have received the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN for many years and must hasten to say that I enjoy reading it each and every time. Many times I have ordered from advertisers and I also have advertised ar ticles for sale. I feel that advertisers should give their names and com plete street addresses rather than just the town and phone number alone. Telephone calls get rather expensive for peo ple on fixed incomes. If complete addresses were included, it would eliminate the need for a telephone call which could encourage more buyers. H. E. Freeman 2024 Cokesbury Dr. Savannah, Georgia 31406 Dear Editor: I have a night-blooming cereus which had one bloom on it this time. I have heard that there is a legend about this flower which has something to do with the birth of Jesus. Could you or any of your readers tell me what this story is?
