FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin VOL 69, NO. 50 Wednesday, December 8, 1982 floi Taum Help Preserve Ga.'s Wildlife Wildlife management in Georgia traditionally has been oriented toward game species such as deer and quail because most programs have been supported with hunting and fishing license revenues. In recent years the programs have been expanded to include all wildlife -- nongame and endangered species, as well as game species. Nongame species are wildlife that normally are not hunted such as bald eagles, bluebirds, purple martins, and chip munks. For a long time we believed that most nongame animals would pretty much take care of themselves, but Our guest columnist this week is Joe D. Tanner, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, 270 Washington Street, SW, Atlanta 30334.) serious population declines in animals such as the bluebird, cougar, and bald eagle have now convinced us otherwise. Although habitat losses have had adverse impacts on all wildlife, both game and nongame, game animal populations have fared well under sound management programs, in spite of tremendous habitat losses. Nongame animals can also thrive, but they will require the same kind of management available to game species. Management of our nongame resource will cost money, however, and during these tough economic times, finding funds will not be easy. Yet there is an answer, one that doesn't burden taxpayers with addi tional taxes. In the 1983 session of the Georgia General Assembly, legislation will be proposed that will establish a volun tary income tax check-off for nongame wildlife. The legislation will provide space on the state in come tax form whereby a taxpayer can "check-off" a tax deductible donation to be applied to Georgia's nongame program. The effect of this legislation would be that for the very first time all (Continued on Page 12) Commodity Meetings Not Just a Holiday Endeavor Planned This Month Successful Christmas Trees Nomination meetings for producer Demand Attention Year Round member vacancies on the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commis sions for Cotton, Peanuts and Tobac co will be held the week of December While most folks think about Christmas trees only during the yuletide season, for Georgia's some 400 growers the trees are a year-round concern. 20-22. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, December 8, 1982 we yet lettm Dear Editor. Can anyone tell me how long it has been since sweetgum trees have not had balls on them. There are none on the trees this year. I am thankful because they are hard to rake up. However, I would like to know the reason and how long its been. Lucile Cochran 1067 Clay Street Marietta, Georgia 30060 *** Dear Editor It has really been a good tomato summer and braggers have been bringing in their biggies to the Cook Bank where I work to display. Well, big may be the measure of success in gardening but little is cute. I request that my cute little tomatoes be documented in your record books. After all, how many times have you received eight fresh tomatoes in a tooth box? These tomatoes were Parks 100. A friend gave me a plant last April. I planted it in an eight-inch flower pot and placed the pot by one of the iron supports in the carport. It has been a magnificent plant. I stuck a few 4-10-5 plant food sticks in the pot along with a little lime and ash from the grill. As the plant grew, I would tie it to the iron support. It was up to the carport ceiling in no time. Of course, not all my tomatoes have been as small as the ones I sent in; most of them have been as big as a big agate marble. But I have had a ball with the real little ones .. . throwing them whole in salads and using them to decorate church supper dishes. Anne F. Barrow P.O.
