FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture a rrr Market Bulletin VOL. 69, NO. 47 Wednesday, November 24, 1982 Roy CMi Kerosene Regulations Watching Over Pesticide Use You benefit every day from pesticides although you may not always realize it. Your food, your home, your water -- all are protected by pesticides. Pesticides also are us ed to combat problems such as the spread of diseases by mosquitoes, ticks and fleas; strangulation of lakes by hydrilla or algae and destruction of forest by gypsy moths or pine bark beetles. Pesticides are one of the revolu tionary discoveries that have helped man create a better and more com fortable life. Fire, nuclear energy and the more powerful medicines are other discoveries that have the (Our guest columnist this week is Roy P. Clark, Sr., Chief of the Pesticides and Toxic Substances Branch, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region IV, 345 Courtland Street, Atlanta 30365.) capability for great good. Beneficial as they are, however, these also have capacity for harm if not handled pro perly. The manufacture, sale and use of pesticides are regulated by the En vironmental Protection Agency (EPA) under a law called the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), as amended. More than 35,000 products made from one or more of 900 chemical compounds are currently registered by EPA. Much of the $1.14 billion spent by the agricultural chemical industry in research and develop ment since 1974 was the result of government regulations to make cer tain of product safety. You and the environment are pro tected from pesticide abuse by the registration process. The registration (Continued on Page 5) Swine Workshop In Effect Immediately The Georgia Department of Agriculture has issued emergency regulations requiring wholesale and retail sellers of kerosene to identify the fuel by grade on all dispensing equipment and containers, effective immediately. The special regulations result from increased use of portable kerosene space heaters and other kerosene ap pliances. These heating units emit greater concentrations of sulfur in the air. (Continued on Page 16) Proposed Rule Changes Benefit The Master Purebred Swine Breeder Workshop is set for January 6, 9:45 a.m., at the Rural Develop ment Center in Tifton. The workshop is designed to help in breeding better boars and gilts and in merchandising so that purebred breeders can be competitive. The cost of the workshop is $7 for producers who register before December 20 and $12 for those who register after December 20. Par ticipants should make checks payable to "Swine / RDC" and send them to Swine / RDC, P.O. Box 1209, Tifton 31793. For more information, call Erik Cleveland at 912-386-3364. Vaccinated, Non-lnfected Herds Changes in regulations concerning sale and movement of non-infected adult cattle which have been vaccinated for brucellosis will likely be approv ed in spring 1983. The brucellosis committee of the U.S. Animal Health Association (USAHA) and the Executive Com mittee of USAHA approved the changes at their annual meeting in Nashville two weeks ago. Usually, those recommendations are approv ed by the Uniform Methods and Rules arm of the U.S. Department of Agriculture upon recommendation by USAHA committees. The change would be a boon to ranchers and cattle owners who have vaccinated their non-infected herds against brucellosis, a highly contagious bacterial disease that causes abortions, breeding problems and lower milk yields in infected animals. Brucellosis also can be transmitted to humans as undulant fever, caus- (Continued on Page 16) New Peanut Variety Promises Forage Alternative for S. Ga By Dr. G. M. Prine, Agronomist, University of Florida, and developer of Florigraze. A new nutless peanut developed in Florida promises excellent forage possibilities for South Georgia. Florigraze rhizoma peanut is a perennial forage legume developed from a Brazilian plant introduction. The rhizoma peanut has few or no seed so this relative of the common peanut must be propagated by rhizomes. Florigraze was developed and released as a cultivar by Florida Agricultural Experiment Stations. This peanut is only adapted to the warmer portions of Georgia. The northern productive limit is estimated to be Cordele although Florigraze and other perennial peanuts have survived winters at the Georgia Coastal Plain Station in Tif ton and SCS Plant Materials Center at Americus. tons of hay per acre. The protein content of good rhizome peanut hay is 14 percent or higher and with an organic matter digestibility above 65 percent. The quality of properly harvested and cured rhizoma peanut hay is as good as alfalfa hay. In peninsula Florida, Florigraze can be cut three times a season for hay but this probably will be reduced to two cuttings in South Georgia with some grazing in addition. Floriglaze has produced up to six (Continued on Page 5) ___ ^ Special Handicrafts Christmas is just around the corner.
