It takes two hands to han dle this 12 pound, one ounce sweet potato produc ed by Mrs. Dent Bloodworth of Rex. She grew the giant potato on her grandfather's land, Walter Estes, who is 100 years old. PAGE 12 Compost Pile (Continued from Page 1) of the essential elements needed in good plant production. While most organic material can be added directly to the soil, the com posting process is advantageous. It reduces the volume of plant material to one third or less of the original amount and usually destroys the viability of weed seeds that may be present. Almost anything that was once liv ing can be used for compost. For ex ample, leaves, grass clippings, sawdust, evergreen needles, leafy garbage, twigs and other similar material can be used. Decomposition will take place at a faster rate if com post material is chopped or ground as small as possible. For example, you can run your leaves through the lawn mower or large limbs through a shredder. Your compost pile can take any shape that you choose. You may simply stack the organic material in the middle of your garden, build a re taining wall from concrete blocks or use a container such as a barrel. Whatever design you select, con sider the following guidelines for successful compost: -- Begin with 10 to 12 inches of leaves or other material. -- Cover with one inch of topsoil. -- Add a layer of a balanced fer tilizer. -- Repeat these steps until your compost is at least four feet deep. -- Leave a slight depression in the center of the pile so that rain will drain down through the pile. -- During dry weather, water the entire pile. -- Stir the pile occasionally to quicken decomposition. -- Your compost should be ready to use in the garden after 12 to 18 months. If you do not have the space for a compost pile, try substituting a trash bag instead. Simply stuff a black plastic trash bag with leaves until it is full. Add a handful of 8-8-8 fer tilizer and a gallon of water to begin the decomposition process, retie the bags and set aside. In about three months, the material should be com posted enough to use in your garden or flower beds. Thomas Craven of Pendergrass has his hands full with the jumbo cantaloupes he grew in his summer garden. The largest melon on the right weighed 17 pounds, 10 ounces and the one on the left weighed 15 pounds. There is a place in Georgia called ox town. The proprietor is James Beamon, who uses oxen exclusively to till his land, pull his logs and pro vide power for his wagon. The beasts of burden, according to Mr. Beamon, have not received the recognition and respect they deserve for their value in early agriculture. "We have mule days honoring their contribution but no one has noticed the value oxen played in developing our country." Mr. Beamon would like to hear from anyone who is interested in oxen. You may write him at: Route 1, Box 203-A, Pelham, Georgia 31779. Taming the Muscadine Proves Successful (Continued from Page 1) were naturally interested in wine making. Vines of native grapes, however, tended to grow high into trees. Because the fruit was difficult to harvest in large quantities for wine making, it was often left to be eaten by birds and wild animals. As a result, early settlers turned their at tention to imported grape varieties from France, Italy and other coun tries. Unfortunately, these imports did not thrive in their new climate. The small amount of wine they did manage to produce was described as, "sad stuff, and bitter, rather the juice of the stalk than of the grape." Around 1816, Thomas McCall of Laurens County began experimen ting with wine making from native grapes. His wine is claimed to have been famous in many surrounding communities. In 1826, he produced 860 gallons from his two acre vineyard. In the mid 1800's, a suitable wine market did not exist in Georgia. For example, in 1845, James Horsley of Upson County, made large quantities of scuppernong wine, but the poor market ultimately discouraged him. About this time, a correspondent with the Southern Cultivator wrote, ". . . consumers of wine in this state will scarcely be induced to prefer domestic unless it were offered to them under some outlandish name or unintelligible brand." Some even accused the Northern states of buy ing Southern wine, adulterating it in their cellars, and sending it back to the South under their label for a substantial profit. In 1848, Charles Axt, a German vine grower, settled in Augusta and established vineyards. He believed that with proper management, Georgia vineyards would excell. By 1855, his efforts were rewarded when his grape and wine proved to be an outstanding sensation at the Atlanta Fair. His success in wine making received further recognition in Cincinnati in 1859 when his Georgia wine of the 1957 vintage received wide acclaim and a higher price than Ohio wines. During the same time peach pro duction began to flourish in Georgia, a few adventurous farmers tried to commercialize grapes. The War was hardly over before a campaign was initiated to encourage more vineyards. In 1867, Jarvis Van Buren, a well-known horticulturist, stated, "Let us make the state of Georgia one grand vineyard such as the world has never yet seen." He believed that a wine industry would be an ideal substitute for cotton. The Cultivator also reported, "scuppernong fever seems to be in creasing." Although "fever" may have been an exaggeration, by 1880, vineyards were springing up around Columbus, Macon, Griffin, Thomasville and Augusta. In the late 1800's, the Tift brothers of Tifton began grape culture and wine production. Their vineyard contained over 40,000 vines. By the end of the century, grapes were be ing cultivated throughout the state. Over the years, Georgia has been a leader in the development of new and improved muscadine varieties. Researchers at Georgia Experiment Stations have successfully developed larger muscadine varieties which have more eye appeal to the con sumer. Georgia's muscadine industry has rapidly increased during the past few years. This is due in part to the early retirement of many urban and rural individuals searching for ways to enhance their income in later years. Presently, there are approximately 1000 acres of muscadine grapes scat tered across Georgia, according to Owens. Most of these vineyards tend to be small, five to ten acre, vineyards. The bulk of muscadines grown in the state are utilized as table fruit and often marketed in "pick your own" vineyards. The Georgia Muscadine Growers Association was established around 1975 for the purpose of promoting, establishing standards of quality, and locating viable markets for the fruit. "It is difficult to promote a fruit that many people remember going into the woods and picking," ex plained Owens. Wednesday, Novebmer 3, 1982 Farmers' Markets (Continued from Page 1J At the auction market in Thomasville more than $15 million in squashes, peppers, cucumbers and other vegetables was sold this year. At other year-round markets such as Augusta and Columbus, each market saw more than $20 million in produce pass through its sheds. In Cordele, "The watermelon capitol of the world," the seasonally operated market is known for its abundant watermelon, as well as cantaloupe and southern field peas. There, sales reached nearly $11 million. The giant of Georgia's farmers' markets, the Atlanta State Farmers' Market, saw total sales of $145.3 million. The Atlanta market still maintains its reputation as the largest facility of its kind in the world. And, its reputation continues to bring marketing specialists from across the U.S. and around the world to study its operations in order to pattern improvements or new markets after the Atlanta facility. In Savannah, a two-day-a-week "Downtown Market" was begun in 1979 as a direct marketing pilot pro ject. Its purpose was to provide a direct outlet for area producers and to offer inner-city residents the con venience of a market within walking distance. Now, the possibility of opening downtown markets in other cities is being studied. Georgia's other markets operating on a 24-hour basis, year-round are located in Macon and Savannah. Other markets operating seasonally include Albany, Athens, Blue Ridge, Cairo, Donalsonville, Glennville, Moultrie, Pelham, Tifton and Valdosta. Poultry Program (Continued from Page 12) oily bird syndrome and replacement policy for layers. The programs in Extension are basically designed to improve the ef ficiency of the production of broilers, eggs and turkeys including: factors affecting meat yield, quality and sizing of broilers, quality control surveillance of feed ingredients, especially pesticide monitoring, reproductive problems with dwarf breeders, alternate sources for litter, improving methods for feed ingre dient evaluation, bone breakage problems in spent hens, shelf-life and new product development of broiler meat, hatchery management problems, breeder male selection. Members of the faculty of the Division work closely with various state, regional and national organiza tions, including the Georgia Poultry Federation, Georgia Egg Commis sion, Georgia Egg Association and the Southeastern Poultry and Egg Association. The Division in cooperation with the Georgia Poultry Federation holds several workshops and seminars for the poultry industry each year. PICK PECANS EARLY Pick pecans as soon as they hit the ground, say agricultural specialists with the Georgia Extension Service. The nut is at top quality right then and harvesting nuts early keeps fall ing leaves from complicating the harvest. Also, early harvesting and marketing usually mean top prices.
