FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture rst Market Bulletin Vol. 68, No. 34 'Bumide 1982 Sunbelt On the Horizon Agriculture: The United States' largest industry; Georgia's most valuable resource. It's a demanding profession. The Sunbelt Agricultural Expo sition is a direct response to the needs of deman ding agricultural professionals -- farmers and agri business people. One of the top three farm shows on the North American Conti nent, it is the South's most infor mative and exciting agricultural event. Going into its fifth year, the Sunbelt Expo has developed into a major educational tool. It provides (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Joe Burnside, Sunbelt Agricultural Ex position Co-ordinator, Rural Develop ment Center, Tifton 31793.) exposure to what's on the market and an opportunity to see the pro ducts in action -- all at no cost. The 1982 Expo is set for October 12, 13, and 14 in Moultrie, Georgia. Over 730,000 visitors have walked the 80 acres of static exhibits and through the 580 acres of harvesting and tillage demonstrations since Sunbelt's 1978 debut. A total of 5,801 aircraft have landed on the 9,000 foot FAA controlled runway at Spence Field, the former airbase Sunbelt calls home. Sunbelt is international. Canada sponsored the first international ex hibit in 1981, and will be back for 1982. Groups have visited from across the Southeastern U.S. and throughout the world -- France, Egypt, Mexico, Italy, Canada. 1982 brings to Sunbelt refined food and parking facilities and smoother overall operations. Con tinuous harvesting and tillage demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., food service and sanitary facilities in the fields are new features. Specialty areas have evolved in the (Continued on Page 11) Wednesday, August 25, 1982 UHT Milk Is On The Way! Roy Strange, President of Dairymen, Inc., presented Savannah Mayor }ohn Rousakis and Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin one of the first half-pint cartons of Ultra High Temperature milk processed in the new plant in Savannah. The dignitaries were on hand recently for the first commercial shipment of UHT milk. UHT milk will soon be on your grocer's shelf. The milk does not require refrigeration and remains fresh in the pantry for up to three months. It is real, fresh milk which has been processed and packaged differently to eliminate the need for refrigeration until it is opened. Jerusalem Artichokes Provide A Plentiful Vegetable Supply If a vegetable that requires no spraying, no cultivating and no pruning ap peals to your, consider the Jerusalem artichoke. Not only do the plants re quire little care but once they are established, you probably will have an abundant supply of vegetables year after year. No one is sure how Jerusalem ar- are native American plants and total tichokes came by their name. They ly unrelated to globe artichokes. Also Crop Insurance known as "chokes" or "sunchokes," the plants belong to the sunflower family. Deadline Set The final date for Georgia wheat growers to make ap plication for federal crop in surance on their 1983 crop is September 30. Farmers interested in such insurance and desiring fur ther information should con tact their local office of Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. These offices have infor mation on the new federal crop insurance program as well as a list of local agents from whom crop insurance can be purchased. Jerusalem artichokes are hardy, particularly in the Eastern United States. It is not uncommon to find a patch of them growing wild along a country road, fence row or the site of an abondoned homestead. The ideal time to scout for wild stands of sunchokes is during August and September while the flowers are in bloom. Look for plants, six to nine feet tall, that resemble cultivated sunflowers in bushy clusters. The bright yellow blooms resemble small sunflowers without the brown center. While the plant is somewhat of an ornamental, it is probably best known for its edible tubers. The (Continued on Page 11) ag consumer line. .. I have a pecan tree which is about five feet off of my dirt driveway. My wash water now drains down the drive, past the tree, and soaks in the ground about 20 feet beyond the tree. Will the bleach and washing powder harm the pecan tree? R. E. Macon Standing water will slow the tree's production. The water must be able to drain well for maximum yield. Most washing powders used today will not harm the tree; however, excessive chlorine bleach could cause damage. It is recom mended that you run the line from your washing machine an extra 10 to 15 feet further from the tree. See Page 6 for Pick Your Own. Mrs. Eleanor Paris of Hiram is an avid purple martin fan. Each year she sets up over 100 gourds and says she has attracted as many as 50 pairs of martins. Mrs. Paris has been "keeping" martins for over 10 years and claims that the mosquito and fly population is greatly reduc ed when the martins are around her home. My husband and I work a total of eight hours picking 200 pounds of okra every other day and call the customers to pick it up. It sits on my carport bagged up with their names on it. Sometimes they come the next day; other times they don't come at all. They must think we're like a grocery store and they can drop in whenever they want to. But if I sold the bushel of okra that has their name on it to someone else, they would not like that. Neither do I like it when they show such a lack of respect for me and my farm products. Next year we'll be selling to a select number of customers -- the ones we know whose word is good. Betty Jane Stephens 527 Tom Smith Road Lilburn, Georgia 30247 Will furnish sprigs & custom pit. Page 12 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, August 25, 1982 Purple Martins: "America's Most Wanted Bird" In preparing martin gourds, let the fruit fully develop before taking it from the vine. Harvest and dry in a cool, dry place. To help them dry more quickly, I drill two or three, one-fourth inch holes for drainage in the bottom (do not let the gourds sit in the liquid that drains out or rotting may occur). Cut out a two and one-eighth to two and a half inch diameter entrance hole, one inch above the bot tom of the gourd. If possible, paint the house inside and out with white paint to help keep it cool and discourage starlings. Before you put up your martin gourds, put a pinch of sulfur dust in to control mites. Gourd houses should be at least 15 feet from the ground and no closer than 30 feet to the nearest tree. Do not space gourds too far apart since martins are colonial birds and like to nest together. William Smallwood Ringgold We have two aluminum martin houses between our house and the lake, spaced approximately 25 feet apart in an open space. We do not have mosquitoes, even though the lake is near. Also, other insects such as wasps, etc. have been great ly reduced. All of this, along with the pleasant song of the martins and watching them as they sail through the air, is wonderful! I recommend aluminum houses, as they seem to love them. Marcus A. Smith LaG*ran*ge * Once you are a martin keeper, you will always put up some gourds each year. It is a sad day when the martins leave each year. They become your friends during the summer and when they leave you know winter is not long in coming. Bill Smith Locust Grove *** In response to an advertisement in the MARKET BULLETIN, I ordered martin gourd seed and planted them in May of 1981. In early autumn, 1981, I harvested a dozen gourds. After cleaning them and coating the inside with varnish, I suspend ed them on a 20-foot pole in the late winter of 1981. By April of this year purple martins had taken up residence in the gourds. Now there are about one dozen martins. I have attracted mar tins solely by providing accommodations for them. Harry M. Duvall Valdosta *** I have been inviting purple martins to my place for the past 15 years. I used to lie in bed at night and slap at mosquitoes buzzing around my ears. Since I have invited martins, I have not heard any mosquitoes. F. E. Malcom Monroe Years ago, purple martin houses and gourds were a familiar sight throughout rural Georgia. Martin houses are not as common as they once were. However, as interest in in sect control without the use of chemicals increases, the birds are regaining popularity. North American Indians were among the first to take advantage of the martin's tremendous appetite for in sects. They provided homes for the birds to help control flies and mosquitoes plagu ing their settlements. They passed their knowledge of the martin along to early colonists. Purple martins are not year-round residents of Georgia. The birds winter in South America and usually arrive in south Georgia in early February and north Georgia in midMarch. The dove size birds are the largest and probably most popular members of the swallow family. The male is a beautiful shiny, blue black, while the female is smaller and duller with a pale, gray breast. Although martins feed on a variety of flying insects, their ability to control in sect pests, particularly mos quitoes, has sometimes been overrated, according to Extension entomologists. Martins seek food from dawn until dusk while mos quitoes are generally active from twilight into the night. However, many MARKET BULLETIN readers credit the martin for effective mosquito control. If you did not have a pur ple martin colony this sum mer, begin making prepara tions now to welcome the birds to your home next spring. Suggestions from MARKET BULLETIN readers on attracting the birds as well as their benefits, are included on this page. In addition, a pamphlet entitled Martin Houses is available on re quest from The Georgia Department of Agriculture. "Operation skywatch" is in progress at our home on Lake Cindy the first week in March, waiting anxiously for the "pur ple skeeter eaters" advance scouts to circle our martin houses. The glossy deep purple of the male makes him a fly ing jewel as he darts and swoops in the sky. These birds are most friendly and trusting toward humans. They prefer man-made homes fixed on poles at least 14 feet high and containing a number of apartments to accom modate the colony. They need access to water as their nests are made of mud balls mixed with leaves and feathers which they carefully pack at the door of each compartment that con tains the eggs and later the nestlings. In return for this man-made home, the tenants reward you by gobbling up flying insbcts, particularly mosquitoes, as well as with their cheerful, lilting song and sheer beauty. Mrs. George C. Stevenson Hampton I don't have much education but I do know there's nothing to keep bugs out of crops any better than martins. My pappy, grandpappy and I always had them and never had any bug troubles. My grandpappy was born a slave. He said that the Indians taught his master how to raise martins and that he was the plantation martin boy. He grew gourds and took care of them until after the War. He always said, "One martin pole for every mule farm." That means, one martin pole for every 15 or 20 acres. He also said, no martins, no crops. Martins helped pay for my farm and helped pay my three childrens' way through college. Everyone should have some. T. H. Fort Valley *** I have purple martins on my property and I enjoy sitting and watching them work. They are always catching insects and feeding their young. I am not bothered by any insects around my place. I attract them to my place by pro viding them with a good home to build in. They like gourds better than anything. I keep my gourds painted white. This makes it cooler on the young ones during hot weather. I take them down in the fall and clean them out and store them. I put them back up about the last week in February. The height of my martin pole is about 40 feet to the top gourds. I try to turn all my holes to the east so the hot afternoon sun will not shine directly in on the little martins. I sure miss them when they leave and go back south. L. V. Lunsford Alto Martins primarily eat swarming insects -- always on the wing; they rarely eat beneficial insects. They clean the sky of insect pests 85 percent of the day and consume as much as two and one half times their body weight per day. I think that purple martins would be a big help in the control of sleeping sickness since the virus is spread by mosquitoes. Crop and orchard spraying can easily be reduced by 90 per cent with martins. A good rule of thumb is that a colony of 12 pairs of birds will reduce crop insects up to 90 percent within one fourth mile of the colony and up to 60 percent within a half mile. Gardeners rarely, if ever, have to spray a garden near a colony. Martins are extremely clean, beautiful and beneficial birds and they seem to know just how to help man. Let's help our environment and save Georgia millions of dollars in crop damage and insecticide costs by promoting these wonderful birds. Gene Brown Centerville *** Since I am on the edge of 79 years old and retired, I have a lot of time on my hands so I thought I would share an ex perience I had with purple martins. Crows and hawks are bitter enemies of purple martins. One day I saw a crow come a little too close to the martin nests. About five or six of the birds got after the crow and chased him half a mile with feathers flying before he reached the woods and escaped. Faris C. Malcom Monroe *** I have raised purple martins every year for 40 years with the exception of 1970 and 1971. I now have 48 gourds and two poles and about 75 birds. The two years I didn't have martins, bugs almost ate my garden up, even when I sprayed. When I have martins, all I have to do is dust my cabbages a few times. Oh yes! I also have to dust those dang fire ants. If I can teach them to fly, the martins would probably eat them too. D. L. Beck Macon *** Purple martins are just good to have around. Aside from running crows and jay-birds off, they are a terror to the local insect population. Each bird devours an average of 2000 mos quitoes and other pests per day. The birds are no trouble at all. They never bother your garden or roost in your gutters. They just mind their own business. The only complaint we have against the birds is that they don't stay long enough. John and Betty Brown Elberton
