FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin VOL. 68, NO. 29 Wednesday, July 21, 1982 Tkanma Handy FFA Focuses On the Future The Future Farmers of America is a national youth organization serv ing all 50 states and Puerto Rico. It was started by a Virginian, Henry C. Grosclose. The Georgia Association FFA started in 1928 with Billy Bow- doin of Statham serving as Georgia's first state president. The FFA is a vitalizing force in vocational agri culture. Every student who is enroll ed in vocational agriculture should become a member of the FFA because it develops interest and abilities in the broad field of (Our guest columnist is Thomas H. Hardy, Future Farmers of America State President, Route 2, Box 378, Athens 30607.) agriculture and is closely related to leadership, cooperation and citizen ship responsibilities. The FFA pro vides excellent methods of learning how to handle some of the problems of everyday life. In the United States, the FFA has grown from less than 30,000 members in 1928 to well over a half million today. The Georgia Associa tion has over 15,000 members in its ranks. The 1982 national FFA theme, "Vocational Agriculture Growing in America" is very appropriate in this day and time because to many peo ple, agriculture simply means farmers who lack the education and the ability to make it in the real business world, but these people are wrong. Agriculture is not just farmers -- it is engineers, scientists, computer programmers and a long list of others who contribute to America's most diverse industry. Today, agriculture employs 20 per cent of the population in America. Vocational agriculture and the FFA are providing the youth of America with the foundation we need for an abundant life and a profitable living. All notices should include an af fidavit stating that the item was made by the individual advertiser and not purchased for resale. As the cost of plant production increases, the need to protect plants from insect and weed loss also increases, said Dr. Wiley Garrett, plant pathology division chairman of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture. "This is causing increased demand for people trained in specialized areas of plant protection," he said. According to Garrett, plant pathology involves the study of plant diseases, organisms that cause the diseases and their interaction with plants that cause economic losses. It also includes a study of the processes used to identify and control those organisms. "This illustrates the broad areas in cluded in the discipline we call plant pathology," Garrett said. "The career opportunities are just as diverse." The University of Georgia offers bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees in plant pathology. It also of fers a professional interdisciplinary degree in plant protection and pest management at the bachelor's and master's level. "We don't recommend a bachelor's degree in plant pathology unless the student intends on pursu ing a higher degree," Garrett said. "It is basically a preliminary degree such as pre-med or prewet." I thought that your subscribers might come'up with it. The name of the pattern is "Star Burst." I will gladly pay the cost of mailing if anyone has it. Mrs. Clifton Strickland Route 2, Box 118 Nahunta, Georgia 31553 *** Dear Editor I wonder if some of your readers could help me locate a source for a particular type of fly trap. Several years ago I ordered one from an ad in a magazine from somewhere in Alabama. Now I can no longer find any ads for them. The on ly marking on the trap mentions a place in New York state but the telephone company cannot locate a place by that name. The trap is made of screening wire and is round (about a foot in diameter and a foot high). Inside is an inverted cone shaped piece of screening. Underneath is an attached tray on which a small amount of bait can be placed. The one I have now is rusty and needs to be replaced. If anyone knows of a place where I can buy one, preferably in the Atlanta area, I would greatly appreciate knowing the location. Mrs. E. A. Thompson 6540 Collier Road Riverdale, Georgia 30296 Dear Editor: The Columbus Museum of Arts and Sciences, Inc., in Col umbus would appreciate donations of old varieties of seed to be used in establishing a demonstration garden for teaching purposes in history programs. Fred C. Fussell, Curator Columbus Museum 1251 Wynnton Road Columbus, Georgia 31906 Dear Editor: I have been selling seeds for many years through the MARKET BULLETIN. When I get an answer to my ad, I already have the seeds fixed up and mail them the very next morning. You would be surprised to know how many people order seeds and forget to enclose their money or the self ad dressed stamped envelope or even put an address on the in side of the envelope. Even when I get one that has no self addressed stamped envelope or money, if they order, I still send the seeds informing them that they overlooked enclos ing one or both. Only one person has ever sent me the money for these "free" seeds or a stamp. Please urge people to make sure they put their addreses on the envelope and enclose the money or self addressed stamped envelope when ordering. This would help a great deal. Mrs. A. P. Shepherd 1640 Williamson Road Griffin, Georgia 30223 Dear Editor: In 1957 my son and his wife sent me a beautiful rose pink hydrangea. My husband helped me put it in a wash tub out side. It has stayed outside since. Now, after having zero degree weather this past winter, it is the same shade of pink and has larger blooms than ever. We put rabbit compost and pine straw around it and also stood pine tops over it. Since my minister son and husband are no longer alive, I am especially proud of this. Mrs. C. Lynch 633 Floyd Springs Road, N.E. Armuchee, Georgia 30105 *** Dear Editor: The first newsletter of the Georgia Organic Association will be available by mid July. Wednesday, July 21, 1982 THE MARKET BULLETIN Package Bee and Queen Business Buzzing in Southeast Georgia 1 Page 5 eorgia Cooking 3 You've decided to take up beekeeping as a hobby. In preparation, you buy your essential tools and equipment to get the hive in order; then it's time to get your bees. Chances are, you will order your bees from a commercial bee supplier in Georgia. While the state produces moderate amounts of honey, long seasons of warm weather make it ideal for breeding and cultivating bees. Wilbanks Apiaries, Inc., in Claxton, operated by Warren Wilbanks and his sons, Reg and Tommy, is one of the many apiaries located throughout southeast Georgia. Package bee production requires an area without a heavy honey flow. According to Reg Wilbanks, there is a certain latitude that runs across the U.S. which is particularly suitable. "To produce package bees, we start out feeding a colony with sugar syrup to build its strength,'' explained Wilbanks. "Surplus bees are then shaken from the hives into shipping crates every 10 to 12 days." (1) Wilbanks has about 5000 colonies of bees along with 10,000 nuclei used for rearing queens. (2) Bees are sold by the pound, most commonly in two, three or five pound packages. There is an estimated 3500-4000 bees per pound. The apiary ships 15,000 packages of bees and 40,000 to 50,000 queens each year. "Most packages of bees are shipped to northern states and Canada to replace heavy winter losses," Wilbanks commented. The market for package bees peaks in April and May. Queen bees are shipped all over the world from around April to November. Package bees are shipped in special screened crates which include a food supply for the bees' journey. (3) The queen is placed in her own tiny wooden block cage for shipping. (4) The hives of all package bees produced are checked by Georgia Depart ment of Agriculture inspectors at least once a year and are certified free from disease. Beekeeping goes back four generations in the Wilbanks family. "My great grandfather gave my grandfather 10 to 12 hives as a wedding gift," explained Wilbanks. "He got into honey production in North Georgia and eventually expanded to 300 hives." The family later moved to South Georgia and began their package bee and queen business back in 1947. For those interested in going into the commercial bee industry, Wilbanks warns that there is a great deal of money involved in getting started. "Those interested individuals should read as much literature as possible about the business and work with an experienced beekeeper for a while before jumping into it," Wilbanks concluded.
