FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin VOL 68, NO. 28 Monika Radtoiul Wednesday, July 14, 1982 og consumer line... Nutrition Vital To Good Health The Dairy and Food Nutrition Council of the Southeast -- Georgia Division -- is people and programs. It is known as the nutrition educa tion arm of the dairy industry and has been in ex istence in some form in Georgia for almost thirty years. During that time many changes in staff, operations, organization and application have taken place. It started as Dairy Council of Savannah and offered services in that city alone. From that beginning it has grown and now has six offices strategically (Our guest columnist this week is Martha K. Radford, Executive Director of the Dairy and Food Nutrition Coun cil, 5825 Glenridge Drive, Building 1, Suite 108, Atlanta 30328.) placed throughout the state (Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, Macon, Moultrie, Savannah). There is a staff of eight home economists who con duct the nutrition education pro gram for the dairy industry in the en tire state of Georgia. The major objective of the Council is to create intelligent consumers -- intelligent in the area of nutrition. They must be taught early and for that reason a variety of nutrition eduation orientations or workshops are conducted with teachers in the use of the curriculum FOOD . . . YOUR CHOICE. There is specialized training for teachers of children of all ages con cerning the inclusion of nutrition in all subject matter. When the workshops are completed the teachers can then use the materials as tools to teach the importance of good nutrition and making wise food choices, including milk and other dairy products. Through the workshops conducted for teachers last year a potential of almost half-million school children How effective are the electrical devices for killing flies? M. S. Augusta The electrical device may be effective on some flies that are attracted by light, and then only at close range. *** Is there anything I can do that would keep cats from making a litter box out of my children's sandbox? J. S. Gumming Cover the box with a wire screen. *** How long will the chemicals used to control termites and power post beetles last? G. M. Jakin Termite chemical is effective for over 30 years. Powder post beetle control (Lindane) can last over five years, depending on the condition of the area sprayed. *** For action and answers in areas regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, write the Consumer Services office at Room 300, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia 30334, or call our toll-free number 1-800-282-5852, or in metro Atlanta, 656-3645. Tobacco Markets Listed on page 8. Grandpa's, Garden in Georgia received this information. Nutrition information is also pro vided through workshops, seminars and special interest group sessions to health professionals and con sumer groups. Over 15,000 leaders participated in these during 1981. Educating these groups to good eating habits gives them an understanding of why a balanced diet of all four food groups, in cluding milk, should be an essential part of their every-day lives. Infor mation is also presented on "real vs imitation" and new dairy products on the market. The Dairy and Food Nutrition Council is an industry supported, non-profit, scientific/education organization supported by the dairy farmers in Georgia through the Agricultural Commodity Commis sion for Milk and is a member organization of the Southeast United Dairy Industry Association, "I have always had a problem with carpenter bees under my tool shed," explained J. A. Kimbell of Smyrna, "but last summer I found a solution to my problem." "I got a small plastic sandwich bag, filled it with moth balls, and leaving it open, tacked it to the inside top of the shed. For some reason, the carpenter bees were attracted to the fumes, flew inside the bag and died." (Be sure and keep moth balls out of the reach of children and pets.) Ann Ruff of Jonesboro had a pro blem with crows eating her peanuts before they came up until she tried this remedy. "I put my peanuts in turpentine for about five minutes before planting," she explained. "Now I have a beautiful crop of peanuts . . . the crows didn't bother them and they came up fine."
