FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 68, No.2 Wednesday, January 13, 1982 Standardbred, A Proud Past What is a harness horse? He could be a trotter or he could be a pacer; however, they are both a breed of horse called a "Standardbred." The ancestors of today's Stan- dardbred horses are the Arabian and the Thoroughbred. The Thoroughbred, a horse named Messenger, was bred in England and arrived in America in 1788. Messenger's great grandson, Hambletonian, was foaled in America in 1849 and from his four (Our guest columnist this week is Retired Colonel J. H. Masterson, President of the Georgia Standardbred Association, 6203 Moon Road, Columbus 31904.) distinguished sons, all present day trotters and pacers have descended. The difference between a trotter and a pacer is the gait. A trotter moves his opposite front and rear legs forward at the same time. First, his right front and left rear legs move forward at the same time, then his left front and right rear legs come forward together. A pacer's legs on the same side, front and rear, move forward together alternating from side to side. Watch a baby crawl across the floor. A bab/"trots" when crawling but never paces. Early in American history, trotters and pacers were ridden under saddle. These horses also could easily pull a wagon, so as roads improved, the "trottin horse" was harnessed and hitched to high four wheel and two wheel wagons. These horses worked the fields, transported families to places of worship, merchants to business appointments, and physicians to rounds of mercy. As these horses became faster, owners began to race their horses against each other. These races proved to be a hazard on roads, so the racetrack for the Standardbred was developed. The high two wheel wagon or sulky was used to increase (Continued on Page 12) Annual Breakfast Honors Legislators The 1982 Agriculture Legislative Breakfast will be held January 20, 7:30a.m., at the Garden Room, Plaza Park (located across from the Capitol). The annual breakfast, sponsored by the Georgia Agribusiness Council, will bring together Georgia's top elected officials and leaders of our state's agricultural and agribusiness industries. Tickets for the event are $10 each and are available by writing the Georgia Agribusiness Council, Room 332, Agriculture Building, Atlanta 30334. Horse Health Course Scheduled at UGA A horse health and medicine course will be offered at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine February 6-7. The purpose of the course is to provide equine owners and users with an understanding of the proper preventative medicine programs by system and the use of veterinary services. The fee for the two-day course is $40. A pre-registration form can be obtained by writing to: Horse Health, Center for Continuing Education, University of Georgia, Athens 30602. Irrigation Regulations Being Drafted The 1981 session of the Georgia Legislature passed an act, House Bill 521, requiring farmers to install antisiphon devices on irrigation systems. The anti-siphon devices would consist of a check valve and vacuum breaker designed to prevent chemicals from flushing back through irrigation pumps. State officials, working with ag engineers, are in the process of drafting rules and regulations to make the law effective. Farmers are not required to buy and install such equipment until the regulations are published. Basic Care of Pleasure Horses Important During Winter Months Basic management of pleasure horses is just as important during the winter months as it is during other seasons of the year. In general, many horse owners do not have the same concern for their horses during winter since they do not ride them as often. Essentials such as adequate nutrition, parasite control, proper foot care and adequate exercise are often overlooked. Neglect is a major problem confronting pleasure horses during the winter, according to Dr. Charles A. Hutton, Extension animal scientist. "This neglect is not intentional and can take many forms," explained Hutton. "A horse that is kept too fat and confined to a stall without adequate exercise experiences neglect just as a horse left in a pasture with inadequate nutrition and hoof care." The nutritional needs of pleasure horses change in the winter. From a nutritional standpoint, a horse not worked regularly can be considered idle. "Idle, mature horses will usually maintain their body weight on a diet consisting of two to two and one-half percent of their body weight in good quality hay per day," said Hutton. "This would mean a horse weighing 1000 pounds should receive 25 pounds of hay per day." The need for supplemental grain is determined by the horse's extra needs. For example, a horse foaling during the winter or a weanling might require grain supplements. Free-choice mineral supplements (Continued on Page 12) ag consumer line How long will fresh eggs keep in the refrigerator? M.O. Statesboro Fresh shell eggs will keep in the refrigerator at least four to five weeks. Additionally, it is best to store eggs in their cartons because they can absorb refrigerator odors. *** Is red devil lye good to put around pecan trees? R.S. Newnan Our expert says "no." He recommends a good commercial fertilizer with a high potash content. *** Is red dye injected into grapefruits to make them pink? C.M. Austell No. There are pink varieties of grapefruit.
