FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin VOL 68, NO. 18 Wednesday, May 5, 1982 Kodlt Awia Degree Offers Career Option If you enjoy working with animals, yet do not want to spend the years in school required to become a veterinarian, you should consider a career in animal health technology. Graduates of this program work as assistants to veterinarians and research scientists. Accor ding to the Vet erinary Medical Association, "a technician can do anything in a vet erinary practice except diagnose, prescribe drugs and conduct surgery, as long as he is in within the (Our guest columnist this week is Kash L Arora, D.V.M., Ph.D., Director, Animal Health Technology Program, Fort Valley State College, Fort Valley 31030.) limits of the state law and under the direct supervision and responsibility of a licensed veterinarian on each case." Employment opportunities in this field are plentiful. Trained techni cians are employed by practicing veterinarians, universities, govern mental agencies, research laboratories, animal feed labs, animal production industry, zoos and other agencies utilizing animals. The animal health technology pro gram, accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association, was initiated at Fort Valley State College in 1976 in collaboration with the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Fort Valley State and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Tifton, are the only colleges in the state that offer such a program. The UGA College of Veterinary Medicine actively participates in both programs by supplying six mon ths of clinical experience to all animal health technology students. The animal health technology pro gram requires seven quarters of coursework including practical (Continued on Page 12) Pick Your Own Barley Offers Appealing Choice Conning Soon We have received many re quests for places folks can pick -- their -- own fruits and vegetables. Likewise, we know there are many farmers who have a small fruit orchard or several acres of vegetables who would like to get in touch with this ready market to sell their produce. A listing of pick -- your -- own places will be published in the MARKET BULLETIN within the next few weeks. If you would like to be includ ed in this listing, please send us information on your operation by May 12. Please include produce available, directions, any restrictions, hours you will allow picking and other pertinent informa tion. An updated list will be published later in the sum mer. Select Versatile For Double Cropping Situation Many individuals are not aware that barley is grown in Georgia, however harvest of the crop will begin in just a few weeks. Although it is produced on a small scale compared with other grains, interest in barley is increasing. In 1975, only 5000 acres of barley were harvested in Georgia; this acreage expanded to approximately 26,000 acres in 1981. The number of harvested acres is expected to further increase this year since farmers planted an estimated 50,000 acres of barley last fall, accor ding to Dr. Acton Brown, University of Georgia agronomy department. Barley is a cool-season grass best adapted for the Piedmont and Limestone valley areas of the state. High temperatures and humidities in the middle and lower`Coastal Plain often favor the build-up of disease problems that limit its production. Interest in the small grain is in creasing for a number of reasons, ac cording to Brown. Barley is an ex cellent feed grain for livestock. More and more livestock producers are feeding the grain to hogs and cattle because it produces a firmer fat and a leaner carcass. In addition, barley matures earlier than wheat and oats. This makes the crop appealing to farmers utilizing a double-cropping scheme involving soybeans and grain. In the past, barley has been more susceptible to certain diseases than other small grain crops. Breeders are constantly combating disease resistance breakdown. "We can take care of some diseases by treating the seed," ex plained Brown. "However, to com bat certain diseases, resistant varieties must be developed." Brown recently released "Dawn," a new barley variety. Dawn is resis tant to spot blotch and septoria, two important barley diseases. The new variety is not yet available to small grain farmers. However, the Blueberries (Continued on Page 12) Diluting Insecticides For a Backyard Fruit Supply Threatens Tobacco A blueberry bush is a two-in-one plant. It can add beauty to your landscape as well as provide your family with a delicious supply of fruit. (Continued on Page 12) Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin warned tobacco farmers that they may be creating problems for themselves by mixing surfactants, otherwise known as detergents or wetting agents, with in secticides. "Although such products, made by a number of different companies, have sometimes been used with her bicides, tobacco farmers may damage their crops using such pro ducts with insecticides to combat bud worms," the Commissioner said. Irvin said the cool weather has prevented tobacco growth, resulting in tight buds and making it difficult for insecticides to get to the worms, but farmers are taking a real chance in mixing other materials with insec ticides. "Chemical companies spend millions of dollars developing insec ticides that will get the job done and generally insecticides include suffi cient surfactants to do the job," Irvin said. The Commissioner strongly urged that farmers follow the recommen dations of their county agent and Ex tension specialists in dealing with plant insects and diseases.
