FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin VOL 68, No. 15 Wednesday, April 14, 1982 B. 0. F>uj Group Promotes Ga. Muscadines Georgia's muscadine industry has rapidly increased in acreage during the past few years. This is partially due to the early retirement of many people located in urban and rural areas looking for some way to enhance their in come in later years. Recently, large berry muscadine varieties with a potential in yield, flavor, marketabi lity, and vine longevity have been developed through breeding processes. This (Our guest columnist this week is B. O. Fry, President of the Georgia Muscadine Growers Association, 612 Terrace Street, Griffin 30223.) has prompted many individuals to set out a few acres of these varieties in areas where a market exists for the fruit. The Georgia Muscadine Growers Association meets annually to up date any old or new research work related to the muscadine grape. Cur rently, the association is sponsoring two projects. There are two grades as set up by the association, Georgia Premium and Georgia Number One. These two grades have certain standards that muscadine growers are asked to follow when packaging fruit for sale. The standards are based on maturity, firmness, dry stem scar and size of the fruit. When these standards are follow ed, an attractive package of fruit with eye appeal for Georgia con sumers should result. The second project expands the scope of the grape industry in Georgia. Recently the Georgia Muscadine Growers Association has joined with a sister organization, the Georgia Grape Growers Association, in an effort to get legislative changes which would bring Georgia's farm wine laws more in line with those of surrounding states. ag consumer line ... Stolen Dairy Cases Cost I went to a local butcher shop and there were four cats behind the meat counter in the store. Also, the owner requires that you wash your hands in the public restroom if you wish to handle the cheese and other pro ducts. I don't mind washing my hands, but their restroom was filthy, and had two kittens in there in a box. R. B. Hiram Our inspector went to the store immediately. The cats and kittens have been removed, and the restroom has been cleaned. We will keep a close check on this shop. ** Industry Millions Annually If you have in your possession a plastic dairy case that actually belongs to a dairy, you are probably in violation of state law. Although replicas of modern dairy delivery cases can be purchased in stores, the theft of dairy cases from dairies and grocery stores costs the dairy industry from $1 to $1V2 million a year in Georgia, costs that have to be pass ed along to the consumer. Thousands of Georgians have become unknowing "accomplices" in the disappearance of dairy cases each year, according to dairy of ficials. The cases are not public throw aways. They are designed for fre quent re-use in delivering dairy foods to stores, schools, hospitals and other outlets. Please run a lab analysis on these black specs I found in the vanilla ice cream I purchased. W. R. Jacksonville The "black specs" were iden tified by our food scientist as ground vanilla beans. In premium or better grades of vanilla ice cream, you will find real vanilla bean flavoring, while in regular ice cream you will find imitation vanilla flavoring which contains no black bean particles. Dairy cases are not cheap throwaways. They are designed for frequent re-use in delivering dairy foods to stores, schools, hospitals and other outlets. Bulletin Calendar The unauthorized use of marked dairy containers is a criminal act under Georgia law and is punishable by a fine, a jail term or both. The dairy cases are very popular with the general public and have a wide variety of uses by both in dividuals and businesses. Legitimate dairy containers have the name of the dairy stamped or printed on the side of the cases, clearly identifying their ownership and the purpose for which the cases are intended. Farmers' Home Has Answers On Drought Loans Farmers in counties declared disaster areas due to last year's drought should check with their local Farmers Home Administration office for information on loan availability. The declaration does not mean that farmers in disaster counties will automatically get loans. It only means that farmers in those respec tive counties are eligible to make ap plication for a loan. The determination of whether or not a low interest rate loan will be granted will rest entirely on the in dividual farmer's situation and the actual losses he suffered.
