FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin VOL 68, NO. 13 Wednesday, March 31, 1982 9ok Abk Breed Offers Versatility The Georgia Paint horse club may not be the largest horse breed club in the state, but I believe it may be the fastest growing. Interest in Paint horses continues to grow. Our club is drawing new members from other breed owners as well as from people who are just starting in the "horse business." Many people do not understand the true identity of the American Paint horse. He is truly a breed of his own and not just a color classifica tion. The Paint horse is a descendant in a long line of hot-blooded horses, receiving a mixture of Oriental and Spanish blood in the early centuries. In the early 1950's, good foundation Quarter horse and Thoroughbred (Our guest columnist this week is Jon Able, President of the Georgia Paint Horse Club, Route 4, Loganville 30249.) blood was added. Cross-breeding with the Quarter horse had the greatest influence on Paint breed im provement. The Paint horse has undergone many changes since he served ran chers and Indians in early America. These changes have been deliberate, resulting in a fine breed of versatili ty, stamina and great beauty. We now see Paints cutting cattle, racing, jumping and doing everything we see Quarter horses and Thoroughbreds doing. The members of the Georgia Paint horse club are determined to bring the deserved recognition of these horses to our state. We are breeding them, selling them, showing them and educating people about them. In 1981, our club hosted the American Paint Horse Association National convention here in Atlanta. We were glad to have the opportuni ty to meet other Paint horse owners from around the country. This event also gave us the opportunity to show the rest of the country that Georgia is becoming an important part of the American horse industry. Some of the club's 1982 activities include four weekends of registered (Continued on Page 12) Market Bulletin Has Friends Under Capitol's Gold Dome Under the able leadership of our good friend Lieutenant Governor Zell Miller and members of the Joint Conference Committee for Ap propriations, Senate President Pro Tempore A1 Holloway, Senate Ma jority Leader Tom Allgood, Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Paul Broun, Speaker of the House Tom Murphy, House Majority Leader Clarence Vaughn, House Appropriations Committee Chairman Joe Frank Harris and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Marcus Collins, adequate funding for the MARKET BULLETIN to be mailed for the rest of this fiscal year and during the coming 1983 fiscal year was provided by the 1982 session of the Georgia Legislature. Of course, your local legislators also played a key role in voting for and supporting this funding. We in the Department of Agriculture are appreciative of the efforts of the entire 1982 Georgia General Assembly and know that each of you will want to thank your local Senators and Representatives for their con tinued support for the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN. Tommy Irvin Commissioner of Agriculture cxg consumer line ... I ordered two Swanees, one Georgia Bell and two Red Skin peach trees from a nursery here in Georgia. The company did not send my com plete order. I have called and written them several times, but to no avail. I want my other trees or my money back. Can you help? R.P., Soperton We contacted the company and you should receive your other trees within a couple of days. *** A store in my neighborhood is sell ing ice cream with an expiration date of Nov. 26, 1981. I purchased some before noticing this date; it tasted awful. D. F. Hapeville All out-of-date ice cream has been removed from sale. We regret your experiencing this problem and assure you every effort will be made so this will not happen again. Spring Courses Plant a Few Muscadine Vines Planned at Berry Berry College is sponsoring a diversified continuing education program this spring. Among the courses offered are backyard beekeeping, home crafts and hob bies. Some of the classes begin in late March. For complete information regarding cost, schedule, subject areas covered and registration con tact the Berry College Office of Con tinuing Education, Box 7, Mount Berry 30149, telephone 404-232-5374, ext. 2369. Celebrate Spring At Country Fair The second annual Tucsawhatchee Country Fair will be held April 3 and 4 in Hawkinsville. The 1982 Georgia Pork Queen Contest will be held in conjunction with the fair. Country music bands, arts and crafts, farm displays and country cooking will also be featured at the event. The fair is located in Pulaski Coun ty, three miles from Hawkinsville on Highway 257 South. For a Backyard Fruit Supply Muscadines are an ideal fruit for the backyard gardener since they can be produced successfully without an intensive spray program. They have re mained a favorite southern fruit since discovered by early colonists. Although the fruit can be grown successfully in most parts of the state, they are best adapted to the Coastal Plain area. Severe winters in the Mountain area may hamper pro duction. Many muscadine varieties are suited for Georgia. Choose one of the following perfect flowered varieties (self-pollinating): Magoon (black), Southland (black), Cowart (black), or Triumph (bronze), if you plan to set a single vine. Pistillate varieties include Fry (bronze), Higgins (bronze), Summit (bronze) and Dulcet (black). These varieties should not be selected unless you plant one or more of the perfect flowered varieties. Muscadines perform best when they receive full sunlight most of the day. While they are not "soil fussy," they prefer a well drained area. Like brambles, muscadines live many years. Therefore, a sturdy trellis is necessary. Use wooden posts that have been treated with preservatives. The one-wire trellis and the double-curtain trellis are most com monly used by backyard gardeners. The one-wire is easier to construct, however, yields are higher from the double-curtain method. A minimum of 20 feet of trellis is required per plant. By measuring the area where you will plant the vines, you can determine how many plants to buy. If you plan more than one row, space rows 12 feet apart. Posts (Continued on Page 12) Handicraft Edition The special handicraft edition of the MARKET BULLETIN will be publish ed on April 28. Deadline for notices is April 14. All notices should include an affidavit stating that the item was made by the in dividual advertiser and not purchased for resale.
