Farm labor costs have increased and for the first time minimum wage requirements for farmwork equals non-agricultural minimum wage rates as of January 1,1981. It is more critical than ever that Georgia farmers plan their labor needs more accurately, competitively and business-like. Skills must be sought; waste and inefficiency eliminated. Cheap labor in any industry is ex[ pensive and unsupervised labor is disastrous, particularly farm labor. The best source of seasonal farm labor is generally the local supply. But, in many areas of Georgia the (Our guest columnist this week is Ennis A. Quinn, Supervisor, Office of Rural Programs and Special Services, Georgia Department of Labor, 501 Pulliom St., SW, Atlanta 30312.) local supply of seasonal workers has dried up, lured away by competing industry. Many farmers in these areas are relying on migratory farm labor from Florida and Texas. Although some migrant crews who specialize in fruit harvest will accept work commitments in vegetable harvesting, it is usually an unsatisfactory arrangement. Large numbers of Haitians, Cubans, Mexican-Americans and native born American migrant workers, will be available for work workers, will be available for work on a seasonal basis in 1981. Georgia growers should be aware of the diversity of these workers, language and cultural difference that affect working relations. The Georgia Department of Labor will help classify workers and evaluate farm labor contractors' performance and reliability for crews coming into Georgia in 1981. The trend toward irrigation started 20 years ago. In 1960 Georgia farmers used a total of 525 irrigation wells covering 98,000 acres. Eggs are important sources of iron and phosphorous as well as other essential minerals. And to top it all off, a large egg contains only 80 calories! It is amazing that a food with so with only 582 wells and a total of 145,000 acres. But by 1979, 2,939 irrigation wells were in use covering 842,000 acres of Georgia farmland. Irrigation systems in use exceeded 9,400. The importance of irrigation can be illustrated using some figures provided by the Cooperative Extension Service. "Last year, Georgia corn overall produced 35 to 40 bushels an acre admittedly not great but, without irrigation it would have been a meager 10 bushels per acre".
