Good Management Provides Key For Optimum Soil Productivity Soil, like many things, comes in a wide range of qualities. A.B., Atlanta Yes, to make sure plants are disease and insect free, Florida re- quires that all plants be inspected before they enter the state. This insect is not known to cause blisters or burns. The only beetle in this area that causes a blister is the blister beetle. (Continued on Page 12) "Compared with midwestern land, Georgia's soil lacks important organic matter," according to Dr. William Colville, head of the University of Georgia agronomy department. Organic matter incorporated in the soil helps it hold nutrients and up to twice as much water as soil without it. Leaching also is less common in soil containing sufficient amounts of organic matter. "Georgia soil contains one percent or less organic matter compared with the midwest's six percent or more," explained Colville. Drought conditions hit Georgia harder because of the soil's inability to hold moisture and nutrients. Erosion is less of a problem in Georgia now as compared with the past, but the soil will always be plagued by wind and water washing and blowing it away. Plant personnel demonstrated how they hand tied the tobacco leaves before further processing. West Germany is one of our state's leading buyers of Georgia gold leaf. The purpose of the Commissioner's trip was to promote expansion of Georgia's export program and interest other buyers in our Georgia products. 60-64 Year Olds Georgians born between January 1, 1917 and December 31, 1921 may receive $100 to $175 per month less from Social Security than those born before January 1, 1917. Changes in the new Social Security law effective January 1, 1982 have created a situation called the "notch" problem which just recently has been realized. Congressman Jack Brinkley of the third congressional district has introduced a resolution calling for a study of the problem and a report to Congress on how it can be corrected. In the meantime, Georgians who fit into the five year birthday period can join in an effort to get the law changed. You may write your Congressman asking his support of the Brinkley resolution. One name I've read is "switchel." The drink is supposedly made with water, molasses, vinegar, and ginger. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with information regarding this beverage. I would especially like a recipe or general proportions. Barbara Vanderhoff 2627 John Petree Road Powder Springs, Georgia 30073 Dear Editor: I saw an ad in your paper for a Dutch harness. I am not interested in buying one but I would like to see what one looks like. Maybe some of your readers can send me a picture. Kelley Young Box 34 Eastman, Georgia 31023 Dear Editor: My class and I are researching the origins of quilt patterns. We would appreciate readers contacting us and telling us as specifically as possible where they get their patterns. Please identify each pattern by name and describe or sketch it. Sally Wheeler 2706 Gleneagles Drive Tucker, Georgia 30084 Dear Editor: My mother's recipe for "cush" is quite different than any I have read. She put water and salt in a boiler and let it come to a rolling boil. Then she gradually stirred in plain meal until it thickens ... it is the consistency of grits. We had this on cold winter nights for supper in a soup bowl with milk poured on top. This recipe is over 100 years old. Lela Vaughn Huey 5223 Moon Road Columbus, Georgia 31904 Dear Editor: I have been trying to find someone who can splice steel cable and put loops on the ends. I would like to learn how. Is there an illustrated manual that I could purchase on how to do this? Any help would be appreciated.
