FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 67, No. 44 Wednesday, November 4, 1981 Btmufaa Btauwe Knowledge Helps Solve Problems Most of the difficulties agriculture faces have been caused by forces outside of agriculture. The high rate of inflation from which we all have suffered has been hard on farmers. High interest rates par- ticularly have created unbelievable hardships. There are, however, some positive forces at work which can offer some relief. These are the programs of your University of Georgia College of Agriculture. The agricultural experiment stations in conjunction with the Cooperative Extension Service Our guest columnist this week is Dr. E. Broadus Browne, director of the Georgia Agriculture Experiment Stations, 107 Conner Hall, Athens 30602.) are designed to provide one of the most valuable tools producers can use to lower costs and improve production efficiency. That tool is information. There is carefully documented evidence that agricultural research and education in America returns more per tax dollar invested to both producers and consumers than almost anything else on which tax dollars are spent. This return on the average has ranged from 30 to 50 percent. On some specific investments in basic agricultural research, the return has approached 90 percent. Admittedly, agricultural research and Extension cannot alone solve all the problems facing farmers and consumers today. These agencies can, however, do well what they are designed to do if they receive the financial support needed to do the job. There is no aspect of the entire food and agriculture system from the time the seed goes in the ground until the food is set on the table that in- (Continued on Page 12) The 1981 record wheat crop astounded most Georgia farmers. The 1982 crop "will depend on the weather, which was ideal for wheat production this year. Georgia's 1981 Wheat Crop Reaches An All Time High Georgia's 1981 wheat crop has been a record-breaker in both acreage and yield. In two years, the state's wheat acreage has increased from 200,000 acres in 1979 to this year's record 1,050,000 acres. Handicraft Edition The special handicraft edition of the Market Bulletin will be published on November 25. Deadline for notices is November 11. All notices should include an affidavit stating that the item was made by the individual advertiser and not purchased for resale. Quiff Show The Coweta Quilt Show will be presented November 7 and 8 in Newnan by the French IV class of the Heritage School. The event will be held from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday and 1-5 p.m. on Sunday. Over 100 quilts will be featured in the show located in the exhibit building at the Newnan fairgrounds. A $2 donation is asked of those attending the event. The dramatic increase in acreage was in response to good prices wheat was bringing at planting time, according to Dr. Troy Johnson, Extension agronomist. Farmers also needed a cash income in June due to drought losses experienced in 1980. Wheat yields also hit an all time high this year. The state's farmers harvested an average of 41 bushels per acre - a total yield of 43,050,000 bushels, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. Ideal weather conditions were a major contribution to the record yields, according to Johnson. "We experienced a unique spring which was exceptionally dry," Johnson explained. "These dry conditions kept down the problems we usually have with fungus leaf diseases such as leaf rust and powdery mildew. In addition, we had more sunshine than usual and less cloud cover." Georgia farmers already have started planting the 1982 wheat crop. According to Extension agronomists, mountain wheat should be planted before November (Continued on Page 12) Seafood Peddling Hearing Planned A public hearing is scheduled December 8, 1981 to hear comments about changes in regulations governing meat, poultry and seafood sold from mobile vehicles. The meeting will be held in room 336 of the state agriculture building, 19 Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr., SW, Atlanta at 10 am. Anyone may present data, make a statement or comment orally or in writing at the hearing. ag consumer line .. . Should insecticide applications for termite control be made each year? A. Z., Marietta Once the initial application is made correctly, annual inspections will provide sufficient insurance. With increased restrictions on pesticide use, companies cannot make yearly applications except when needed. Annual treatment is not recommended. I saw a sign outside a salvage store advertising dented canned goods without labels for sale by the case lots. Is this legal? J. S., Seminole Stores cannot sell products that are dented on the seams, puffed or without labels. The products have been removed from sale and we discussed this with the manager. We appreciate your bringing this to our attention. I tried to buy some cough drops the other night while purchasing groceries but was told by the cashier that I could not pay for them with food stamps. Was she right? After all you do eat them. T. A. Alto You also consume aspirin and cough syrup, but you can't purchase them with food stamps either. The only items you can purchase with these stamps are meats, eggs, milk, and other "food" items. Additionally, alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, toilet tissue, and detergent, to name a few canot be purchased with food stamps. (Continued on Page 12) Page 2 letteu Dear Editor: We would like to offer the readers of the MARKET BULLETIN free firewood, kindling, and hardwood strips. These trips are a by-product of our manufacturing company and with fuel prices climbing, we feel that people who heat with wood can save money on their fuel bill. There is no charge for the wood which is bundled in 2 foot by 12 foot lots but our insurance company requires that the wood be loaded by our fork lift operator due to the weight, so there is a $5.00 fee for any size truckload. For more information call 799-5659 between 8 and 3 pm. Alan S. Forman, V.P. Shick Moulding and Frame Co. 2424 Marietta Rd., NW Atlanta, Ga. 30318 Dear Editor: I have about 20-25 hazelnut and filbert trees that are now four to seven years old. These trees have produced very few nuts since I have had them. I have three acres in peaches and plums and became interested in hazelnuts after reading that they would grow well wherever peaches grew. The trees are pretty but do not produce nuts. Can any of you readers help? Thomas E. Baughcum 3905 Hartley Bridge Road Macon, Georgia 31206 Dear Editor: I raise pit bull terriers and am forming a new registry composed of owners who admire the breed but condemn the sport of dog fighting. I wish to promote an excellent family and farm dog. I welcome others who share my philosophy to contact me. Dogs do not have to be registered in other organizations to qualify, but must meet inspection for conformation and temperament. Ellen J. Thrall Route 3, Box 314 F Hampton, Georgia 30228 Dear Editor: Although you included a recipe for "cush" in the April 1 issue of the Market Bulletin, I still had the urge to send my mother's version. My mother actually had no recipe for cush, she just "cooked it." This is the way I remember it as a child: Slice leftover biscuits, butter and toast to a nice brown. Place in an iron skillet, sprinkled with salt. Pepper also may be sprinkled over this. Pour hot sweet milk over the biscuits and place skillet in oven so biscuits will become soaked with milk and butter. The brown tops of the biscuits will rise to the top above the milk. It will be something like baked milk toast. Margaret Rusk 1511N. Morningside Dr., N.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30306 Dear Editor: My dad gets your paper once a week. I really like it. I am 12 years old and I grew this four pound sweet potato. If this picture of me and my sweet potato can't be put in the paper don't come looking for me to make another one ... we have already enjoyed it in four pies.
