The land reflects several successional stages, the most recent being an agricultural field that was last farmed in 1960. There is more than one mile of scenic river frontage along the middle Oconee. One particular stand is estimated at 125 years. There are dramatic gorgelike ravines and seveal rock-edged crystal clear streams. Wild flowers and other native plants abound in these settings. Five miles of hiking trails are placed so the visitor can experience the wonderful natural features of the garden. Spring bulbs provide the earliest color in the garden. In 1981, Georgia producers of golden leaf increased their production of flue-cured tobacco 9V2 million pounds and $40.7 million of additional income over drought-riden 1980. This was done in spite of the fact that 1981 has not been a year of abundant rainfall. At left, combines in tandem pick up the wind-rowed vines, separate the peanuts and then spit the crushed vines back on the ground. In the second picture, a member of the Federal-State Inspection Service checks for damage and poor quality in peanuts that have been run through a splitter machine. In the next picture, Hamp Stevens of Stevens Warehouse, weighs a load of peanuts coming into his plant, and at right, 77 year-old J. W. Snider pulls up to the drying sheds with two wagon-loads of peanuts from the land he has farmed his entire life. Estimates on this year's crop vary in different areas but production is expected to be well above last year's drought conditions but still below the 1979 state average of 3,235 pounds per acre. Page 2 we Dear Editor Are any of your readers familiar with a place in Georgia called "Little Sand Mountain?" I have heard of it but do not know where it is. I would appreciate any information concerning the mountain's location, etc. Roy Turner C-9 William St., Box 109 Gainesville, Georgia 30501 Dear Editor: Several people have contacted me about how to grow garlic. Simply plow or spade a deep furrow; mix in compost and other fertilizer and grow in the sun or partial shade. Our family enjoys the MARKET BULLETIN ... it always contains helpful ideas. Mrs. George Collins Route 3 Danielsville, Georgia 30633 Dear Editor: Does anyone know where I could buy some logs already dried. I am restoring an old log house in Callahan, Florida and need some five to six inches around and 10 to 25 feet long. I would appreciate any information. Erma Holton Route 1, Box 316 Callahan, Florida 32011 Dear Editor: My husband and I have started to collect old fruit and vegetable crate labels from the 1920's and up. We have a large collection of these labels from Florida and California. We are now trying to find Georgia labels. Anyone who could send me an example of what they have or where we could find them would be greatly appreciated. Pescha Penso 2308 Meadowvale Dr., N.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30345 Dear Editor: In reference to Phillip Driver's letter concerning bluebirds in Georgia, I don't know about the Columbus area, but they are plentiful here, especially in the country. We have several boxes and they are always occupied by bluebirds. I use a box with a flip top lid so I can clean out the nest easily. I keep the hole closed until the bluebirds start househunting in early spring and close it up in the late summer. I keep the hole 1-1/2 inches, no more no less. It is not enough to put up a proper house at the right height, etc., you also have to guard against sparrows and starlings. If you have a very busy yard with these two birds, the chances of attracting bluebirds is rather slim. M. C. Bennett 190 Laurel Drive Athens, Georgia 30606 Dear Editor I am looking for a hemstitch machine (in any condition) used for making decorative hemstitch on fabrics and linens. If anyone knows where I might find one, please contact me. Mrs. W. Findley Route 4 Cordele, Georgia 31015 Dear Editor: I have a mobile home with Florida paneling.
