FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy frvin, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 67, Number 4 FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, January 28, 1981 Grain Program Helps Farm Survival Farm Land Loss Hurts America One of the major problems concerning agricultural leaders is the rapid disappearance of prime farm land. It should concern everyone. Every day 12 square miles of American farm land are converted \ to non-agricultur|al use. That's three million acres a year. Over the past 10 years, the loss of farm land totals more than 30 mill| ion acres. Ever so slowly, a little bit at a time, the disappearance of farm land in America is beginning to affect our pocketbooks, the quality of our lives and, many think, our national security. Since 1935 about 100 million acres of farm land have been idled because of soil erosion. It is estimated that each year we lost about five tons of good soil per acre. This represents nearly three million acres of crop land washed into our rivers each year. From a diplomatic viewpoint and the tremendous influence our agricultural exports contribute to. the security of our nation and a more favorable balance of trade, many people view our soil resources as equal to our military strength. I have joined other Commissioners of Agriculture throughout the nation in initiating a study to determine what can be done to help deal with this problem. We have created a National Agricultural Land Study which is designed to look at the whole issue and come up with recommendations for self-help. Although America is still able to produce an abundance of food and fiber for our needs and exports, we must be farsighted and realize that technological advances can not be expected to replace agricultural land. Only by studying and planning can we face the challenge of the future: producing enough food for our needs and continuing of strong agricultural exports. Feed Go. Livestock If you are a Georgia livestock dealer, dairy farmer, or utilize cattle in any manner on your farm and need financial assistance as a result of last year's drought condition, there is help available. Funds through the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service emergency feed program are available to most farmers hard-hit by the drought. Roy Gates, Chief of Conservation in the Price Support Division for the state ASCS office of USDA, says assistance applications can still be made through county ASCS offices. Information such as the number of livestock involved, the type of feed normally produced and pasture conditions to typical of information needed and determine aid eligible under provisions of the program. Under the program, many Georgia farmers have been helped with as much as 50 percent reimbursement of the cost of feed purchases. The maximum authorized amount of aid is now 3 cents per pound of grain purchased ... that amount raised from a 2 cents level last August. For further information on the program, you should contact your individual county ASCS office. Ga. Cattle Farmers Need Strategy for Their Herds Clyde Triplet! and Mike Peed Extension Animal Science Specialists Even though cattle have weathered the drought relatively well, many producers are short on feed supplies and need to take certain short term and longrange steps in order to get the greatest return. Short Term Practices [1] Cull cows. Since it is estimated that it will cost $125 or more to keep a cow through the winter and up to $250 on an annual basis, each cow must be a producer. [a] Pregnancy status. If cows are found to be non-pregnant after running with the bull an adequate length of time, they should be culled. [b] Age. When cows are being examined for pregnancy, examine for age by a tooth examination. Any cows which are broken or smooth mouthed probably should be culled. Many old cows will not survive the winter under a situation of short feed supplies. [c] Physical problems. Many cows may have eye, foot, udder or other physical problems. In a period of li- mited feed resources, these cows could be culled too. [2] Control parasites. Deworming of cattle and lice control will make them more efficient in the use of feed (This is the sixth of several stories prepared by Cooperative Extension Service experts on the form crisis.) resources. While these practices will cost a limited amount, it will result in an overall savings. [3] Group cattle for better management and nutrition. Various production classes such as replacement heifers, dry cows, cows nursing calves, and weaned calves, within a beef cattle herd require different management and nutrition. To feed and manage them all as one group wastes limited feed resources. [4] Market properly. Calves should be castrated, dehorned, and sorted for size, age, and sex before marketing when possible. Long-Range Practices The Department of Agriculture's responsibility to the Georgia consumer is an integral part of its overall operation. Registered professional sanitarians inspect gasoline, bedding, food, beverages and much more to assure that the highest standards of quality and safety are maintained. Shown inspecting a Columbus soft drink bottling company, sanitarian James W. Smith [r] inspects empty bottles for defects and cleanliness before the beverage is added. Plant production superintendent Danny Hughes [1] watches while the inspection is made. [1] Control breeding program. A controlled seasonal breeding program will help increase cattle income and make management easier. Advantages include a shorter calving season, savings in labor, more efficient feeding and marketing. (2) An increase in percent calf I (Continued On Page 8) QQ consumer line... PageS Grandpa's Garden The best time to plant roses in Georgia is between November and March. The bare-root or packaged roses should be planted before spring as this gives them time to develop a good root system before foliage and canes begin growing. You should plan to prune your hybrid tea roses in the early spring before new growth starts. Leave at least four to six of the most vigorous canes. If you are hungry to see spring flowers, force branches of forsythia, crab apple, spirea, flowering quince, dogwood or azaleas. Cut branches when the buds begin to swell. Split stems three to four inches and place in container of cold water in dark room. Drop a few pieces of charcoal in water to keep water sweet. Change the water at least once a week and cut off about one inch of stem each time you do. A fine mist spray on the branches will help. When the flowers begin to open bring the vase into a sunny room and enjoy. The national "outstanding young farm couple of the year" is from Georgia. Anthony and Linda Everett of Walton County were named na tional winners for their outstanding achievements hi farming. The couple farm over 1,000 acres, ope rate a broiler operation producing 82,500 chickens annually and ope rate eight commercial size green houses. THE MARKET BULLETIN Cattle Farmers Wednesday, January 28, 1981 -Bulletin Calendar- (Continued From Page 1) crop can result from pregnancy testing, breeding soundness examination on bulls, proper nutrition and a good herd health program. (3) Weaning weights can be increased by using a performance testing program, buying and using performance tested bulls, crossbreeding, proper nutrition and growth promoting implants. Facilities A well planned set of corrals and cattle working facilities is essential. While it may require a limited amount of capital investment, it is a minimal investment over a period of several years. Herd Health And Parasite Control Long-range survival and growth in the beef business depends on a well planned herd health program designed in cooperation with your veterinarian to control reproductive and communicable diseases. Feeding Feed accounts for approximately 70 to 80 percent of the cost of producing beef. The first rule in being efficient nutritionally is have your farm raised forage analyzed. With the analysis of roughage, the proper ration can be formulated for a specific class of cattle. The higher quality feeds need to be allotted to cows close to dropping calves, cows nursing calves and replacement heifers. Dry pregnant brood cows can get by on fairly low quality feeds. Feeds such as drought stricken corn silage, stemmy peanut hay, soybean straw and cereal straws can be used to feed dry beef cows if properly supplemented with protein and minerals. Winter grazing is an expensive crop, costing $60 to $90 per acre. To leave cows on grazing full time will be expensive, and during times of heavy rains, constant traffic can be detrimental to the sod. For most efficient use of this high cost crop, some system of limited grazing should be considered. Cows with nursing calves can meet their protein requirement with only one to two hours grazing per day. Each year many producers rely on liquid supplements as a means of getting protein to brood cows. For these supplements to be utilized efficiently, adequate energy must be available in the remainder of the feed being fed. Many of the roughages which may be fed this year will be too low in soluble energy in order Jan. 28-1 pro, Production sale of per formance tested Durocs, Yorks, Landrace boars & gilts. Info.
