FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture ^ Market Bulletin Volume67, Number27 Rail Sfc Wood Energy On the Farm Georgia farmers are spending a tremendous amount of money each year for agricultural drying and curing of crops, heating poultry houses, and greenhouses, plus residential heating and other needs. State appropriations from Governor George Busbee and the General Assembly have enabled the Forestry Commission to conduct research and demonstration projects using wood chips and residues as an alternate energy source replacing oil, gas and electric systems for heating. In addition to using wood energy (Our guest columnist this week is Ray Shirley, Director, Georgia Forestry Commission, Mocon31202.)_______________ for farm needs, wood residues and chips can be used for industrial, institutional (schools, hospitals and prisons), office buildings and other facilities. Every county in Georgia has large quantities of energy wood. Wood can be made available as facilities are installed to use it. Most all forest industrial plants in Georgia are using wood for 25-100 percent of their energy requirements, with wood supplying 50 to 100 percent of forest industry energy needs in the near future. Some of the combustion systems now in use are: 1. Direct firing of wood for stoves and boilers using solid wood or residues, bark, sawdust, shavings, chips from sawmills, and whole tree chips. 2. Gasification process where gas is made from chips or residue and burned similar to natural or propane gas. Georgia tobacco markets open July 14 See page 7 for listing Enjoy Georgia Watermelons, A Delicious Summer Treat Watermelon season is here at last. Besides promising a delicious taste treat, watermelons mean agriculture dollars to many Georgia farmers. In national ranking, Georgia places third, after Florida and Texas. Dollarwise, the state's watermelon crop generated over $15.6 million dollars in 1980. There is a plentiful supply of fresh watermelons at the Georgia State Farmers' Market in Forest Park. Tim Turner of Eastman (center), along with the help of his assistants, just finished unloading a truck full of watermelons grown on his South Georgia farm. Crisp County claims the title of "Watermelon Capitol of the World." The south Georgia county handles over 95 percent of the state's crop through the state farmer's market in Cordele and probably more melons than any single place in the United States, according to George Lee, Crisp County Extension agent. Over 13 percent of the state's watermelon crop has been harvested, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. While the total acreage planted this year is expected to increase over last year's 27,400 acres, the size of watermelons is expected to be off due to dry weather conditions in many areas, according to the National Watermelon Association. If you enjoy guessing games, selecting a ripe watermelon will certainly be a challenge. There are some outward signs you can look for which indicate a melon's ripeness and quality. A watermelon should be firm, fresh, and symmetrical in shape. Depending on the variety, color may range from a deep green to gray. Page 8 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, JulyS, 1981 Grandpa 's Garden Field Day Planned For Grain Farmers Wood Energy (Continued From Page 1) Folklore may not always be accur ate in predicting the weather -- but it certainly can be interesting as well as a lot of fun! With all the dry weather we've been having, rain seems to be on everyone's mind (particularly farm ers). Here are some signs used to predict rain you might like to look out for ... just in case they really work. Many folks claim that if there is a ring around the moon, it will rain. By counting the number of stars within the ring, you also can supposedly fi gure out how many days it will be before the rain will come. Other weatherlore sayings used to predict rain include: "It rains as long as it takes the rain to come." "When a cow tries to scratch her ear it means a shower is very near." "Rain before seven, quit by eleven." If you have some interesting wea therlore you would like to share with MARKET BULLETIN readers, just send it in and we will try to include your comments in a future Grand pa's Garden. DOUBLE-ROW SOYBEANS -- Far mers check the cultural methods for double-row soybeans during the recent field day preview held at the Sunbelt Exposition in Moultrie. New and different ways of farming are included in highlights of the opera tion which will open to the public on October 13. A Summer Feeds Grain Field Day will be held at the Bledsoe Research Farm near Griffin Thursday, July 23. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and tours of the research plots will begin at 9 o'clock. Area farmers are invited to attend the field day, which will feature the latest research work on topics such as fertility for soybeans no-tilled after wheat, grain sorghum insect pests, and nitrogen rates and time of application for corn. Research agronomists, entomologists and plant pathologists will discuss cur rent studies and will be on hand to answer questions for growers. For more information, contact Dr. Fred Boswell at 404-228-7275. Liquified Bed process which is more like a combination of direct fir ing and gasification. There are hot air, water, and fire tubed boilers available, also steam heat and hot water systems. The Forestry Commission has a number of different systems using direct firing and gasification pro cesses including: 1. A 100 h.p., 3.3 million BTU auto matic wood chip burner for drying corn, soybeans and other agri cultural crops. This unit is a hot air system and is replacing a propane burner on a commercial crop dryer. 2. The same hot air unit was in stalled to heat a poultry house in North Georgia this past winter. 3. A sawdust burner is being used to cure tobacco in southeast Georgia. This unit is automatic, re quiring little attention from the oper ator. Commercial wood units can fur nish heat for many agricultural uses. The Commission's researchers and engineers feel wood systems will save 25-40 percent over propane. Residential heating with wood in Georgia has increased greatly dur ing the past few years. Thirty per cent of all households are using wood to some extent. Approximately 1,166,000 cords of wood were used this past winter for home heating.
