FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume67, Number24 More Food- Less Energy Ever since the 1973 oil embargo, the Food and Energy Council (FEC) has been communicating the fact that there is a delicate balance between the nation's future energy supplies and future food supplies. FEC is a national, non-profit organization of electric organ- izations with a keen interest in the welfare of agriculture, Its primary goal is to assure that the food system (all sectors, beginning with onfarm production) has an adequate amount of energy supplied on a timely basis. Our state and nation does, indeed, have many choices to make as we (Our guest columnist this week is Preston L. Johnson, Chairman of the National Food and Energy Council, P.O. Box 37, Dudley 31022.)__________________ face those "future" challenges that are now upon us. Among the problems facing the U.S., according to the 1980 Global 2000 report to the President are: energy supplies, soil erosion, soil nutrient depletion, crop damage from pollution, water shortages and an exploding world population. Underlying these concerns is a theme that American agriculture is a part of a worldwide food system. Other countries are looking for more of our food exports, even as they point the finger at us as being "energy wasters". A major challenge, then, is to produce more food with less energy, with limited on-the-shelf technology and with limits on our soil resources. Dr. Anson Bertrand of USDA's Science and Education Administration has said, "The base of fundamental knowledge from which most of us in science are working today is extremely limited. The general public does not have the slightest idea how precarious our position is." Yet, our agricultural experiment stations are forced to operate today with only 65% of their 1970 budget, (Continued On Page 8) FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, June 17,1981 QQ consumer line... Can someone check out these computers? L.L. Royston Our sanitarian immediately visited the store. When he arrived the Sunbelt Field Day Features Test Plots Approximately 560,000 acres of peanuts were planted in Georgia this year a six percent increase over 1980 acreage. Due to extended drought conditions last year, peanut production dropped 38 percent below their 1979 manager demonstrated how the computerized checkout system works. Several items that were on sale but were marked with the regular prices were sent over the scanner. All of the items came up with the sale price. The manager stated that all sale prices are locked into a main computer which controls all registers. Field demonstration plots of soybeans, peanuts, corn, cotton and other crops will be featured at the Sunbelt Expo Field Day on June 19, at Spence Field. Field day activities will begin at 9 a.m. Following a barbeque lunch, a chemigation demonstration will include information on safety, calibration and limitations. The annual Sunbelt Field Day and Agricultural Exposition are located at Spence Field, off Highway 33 south of Moultrie. The fourth annual Sunbelt Expo will be held Oct. 13-15. Even with this drop in production, peanuts remained the top money crop in Georgia. "We are guardedly optimistic about the 1981 peanut crop," explained Dr. Ronald Henning, Extension Agronomist, Tifton. "At this point, the potential is there for a good crop year ... if we receive enough moisture, a good stand should be produced." While yield projections will not be available until August, the final peanut crop will ultimately depend on the amount of rainfall received. Besides needed rainfall, peanut growers must also contend with weeds, diseases, and insects. Weeds compete with peanuts for moisture, nutrients, sunlight and space and can be a major factor in reducing profits. Earlier dry wea- Bulletin Calendar* ther delayed weed emergence, however, recent rainfall in some areas has encouraged weed growth. Page8 Grandpa's Garden % If there is an ugly stump in your yard that you have not been able to get rid of ... try hiding it or sprucing it up instead. Hide it by planting vines and letting them grow over the top or if the stump is hollow, fill it with soil and plant petunias, morning glories and nasturtiums. Dry weather may cause fruit to drop prematurely. Try applying a mulch of newspaper, straw, peat, etc. during dry periods to conserve moisture. THE MARKET BULLETIN More Food-Less Energy (Continued From Page 1) in terms of real dollars. If we are to produce more food with less oil, gas and electricity and at reasonable costs to consumers, we must have additional scientific breakthroughs. Agricultural research, like energy, is important to all. The availability and timely use of water and energy is equally important to all consumers. Few people fully realize the critical role that electricity plays in conserving the energy used by the farmer to produce our food; or the role electricity must play in the production of new on-farm energy supplies or in the operation of supplemental energy systems like solar, wind, methane, alcohol, vegetable oils, etc. While the total contribution of many of these will be small, their potential must be fully researched so consumers can invest wisely. To make consumers aware of the individual's responsibility for better energy management, FEC is developing a youth educational package on "Food, Energy and Your Future". Simultaneously, Farm Energy Analysis Guides are being developed for use by farm operators. The Guides and educational package will be available for the FEC annual Conference, to be held September 22-24,1981, in Williamsburg, VA. The conference will discuss timely water, energy, land and food relationships. Anyone is welcome. For specifics, write the author. Wednesday, June 17,1981 Peanut Crop (Continued From Page 1) Thrips, tiny, slender insects, have been an abnormally bad problem in peanuts this year according to Henning. The thrip problem is hard to avoid due to infestations of the insects migrating from wheat to peanut fields. "With warm weather here, peanuts should be able to outgrow problems caused by thrips," said Henning. For optimum crop production, growers should establish and maintain an adequate leafspot control and supply needed water to peanuts if possible. Irrigation, which has increased 15 percent in the last year (particularly in southwest Georgia), should be used along with a moisture measuring device and peanuts should be watered accordingly.
