FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume67, Numbei-18 WtlltftMt WftMMM Floriculture Thriving in Ga. As spring approaches and the time draws near for gardening, making flower beds, prettying up the patio, window boxes, etc., something should be printed about those who have labored long and hard to make our task much easier. Approximately 800 commercial flower growers in the State of Georgia currently produce crops with gross sales exceeding 120 million dollars. Their greenhouse operations range in size from small family owned businesses to large complexes covering 15 to 20 acres. Their preparation for spring began (Our guest columnist this week is William D. Morrison, President, Georgia Commercial Flower Growers Association, 3086 Osborne Rd.,N.E., Atlanta 30319)._________ in December and will continue as long as the demand lasts. In fact their work never ends since the end of one season signals the beginning of another. The Georgia Commercial Flower Growers Association (GCFGA) was organized in 1974 for the purpose of promoting the growth and well being of greenhouse operations as a part of the agricultural community. The membership of GCFGA is made up of growers, educators and allied tradesmen associated with the growth and sale of floriculture products, vegetable and foliage plants. The current membership is about three hundred and hopefully, as time passes, every grower in Georgia will become a member. In July of each year an annual three day Convention and Short Course is held at a selected location where one can learn, relax and enjoy the fellowship of fellow growers. This event is recognized as one of the most advanced in the nation and consists of outstanding talks and seminars by recognized authorities on subjects of vital interest to everyone in the plant business. A trade show is held in conjunction with this gathering so that attendees can become familiar with new products of direct interest to them. New plants of all types are displayed, as well as new products and growing techniques. (Continued On Page 12) FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, May 6,1981 Pick You r Own Market Bulletin Generates Coming Soon We have received many requests for places folks can pick their own fruits and vegetables. Likewise, we know there are many farmers who have a small fruit orchard or several acres of vegetables who would like to get in touch with this ready market to sell their produce. A listing of pick your own places will be published in the MARKET BULLETIN within the next few weeks. If you would like to be included in this listing, please send us information on your operation by May 20. Please include produce available, directions, any restrictions, hours you will allow picking and other pertinent information. An updated list will be published later in the summer. Botanical Garden Needs Volunteers The Atlanta Botanical Garden is recruiting volunteers for its spring and summer gardening program. Volunteers are needed to work in the garden, the Visitor's Center, and the gift shop. Individuals interested in giving tours and slide show presentations also are needed as well as volunteers who will be available during the summer to work with the children's vegetable gardening program. For further information, call Brenda Dryer at 876-5858. QQ consumer line... I read in a local paper about a tomato tree that grows extra large tomatoes. I never knew that tomatoes grew on trees. Is this factual and have you ever heard of one bearing fruit as this ad claims? G.T. Rossville According to our plant expert you might be disappointed sorely with the tomato tree. It takes approximately two years for the tree to bear and then only cherry size tomatoes. He suggests that you plant regular tomatoes. $ 137 M illion to Ga. Economy Dr. Stephen J. Karina, Technical Writer Department of Agricultural Economics, UGA In March, the Department of Agricultural Economics of the University of Georgia conducted a survey designed to discover the uses and merits of the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN. The survey sought to establish which features of the BULLETIN proved most important to subscribers. SINGLE RESPONSES Responses listing one reason for subscribing indicated a large majority, 60.4% for classified ads, as the most important factor. Crop and livestock news finished second with 21.2%, recipes 11.3%, agricultural organization news 6.5% and the calendar 0.6%. The tenth annual Prater's Mill Country Fair will be held May 9 and 10 in Dalton at the site of the historic old mill. More than 150 artists and craftpeople will exhibit their works during the two day event. The fair opens at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday and closes at 6 p.m. Admission is $2 for adults with children under 12 admitted free. For additional information call 404-2595765 or 259-3420. We wanted to determine how many persons used the classified advertisements in the BULLETIN and how valuable were the resulting transactions. The final tabulation of results on April 16 showed the BULLETIN to be of significant value to its users. The average reader conducted three transactions in 1980, with the average transaction amounting to $181.55. The total value of transactions conducted through the MARKET BULLETIN ads approached $137.7 million. The study further indicated that 192,000 of the BULLETINS current subscribers had bought or sold through classified advertising in the past. In evaluating the results of the survey, the Chairman of the Division of Agricultural Economics, Dr. Stephen J. Brannen concluded, "The voluntary response of almost six thousand readers reflects the intensity of their interests in the MARKET BULLETIN. Apparently, it's a convenient source of information and shopping opportunities. Certainly, it is a unique marketing aid." Within the survey period, 5,963 persons responded, representing 2.34% of the BULLETIN subscribers. Of those who responded, 4,499 indicated that they had used classified advertising in the past. The number of persons who answered enabled us to establish statistical confidence in the survey's results. Estimates should be within plus or minus 6.65% of the actual figures a researcher would obtain if 255,000 BULLETIN subscribers were interviewed. In tabulating the results, we ex- (Continued On Page 12) e member Page 2 we iyoBJj 1 .Ph,; 9.1gi-565-724.5i'.':______ 8,000 bu. shelled com SW/bu. at bin bulk. J. W. Durham, Rt. 2, Bluffton. Agricultural seed and plants for sale All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. AU agricultural plants are required to be inspected to assure disease-free condition. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless it is grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as MeNair, Oasis, Coker, and Arthur may not be propagated for sale unless the grower is certified. Page 12 Grandpa's Garden t If kept cool and dry, most unused garden seeds are good for at least a year. Keep them in a jar with a tight fitting lid in your refrigerator if you have the space. "I would like to know how to keep the crows from eating my corn before it even comes up," asks Mrs. Dennis Fry of Forsyth. Readers, any ideas for Mrs. Fry? "How do you keep Vidalia onions from rotting? Is there a special bag or something to keep them fresh?" asks Mrs. Howard Graham, Ringgold. The best method devised for keeping sweet Georgia onions is to store them in panty hose. Slip an onion into the toe, tie a twistie in the stocking, slip in another onion, tie a twistie etc. This keeps the onions from touching and will preserve them longer than if they are left in the bag or sitting flat. Store them in a cool dry place for best results. Floriculture (Continued From Page 1) At other times of the year greenhouse production workshops are sponsored and conducted at locations throughout the state to keep our members and others informed and up to date. Perhaps our most lasting contributions to the agricultural community in general, and to our industry in particular have been our successful efforts to obtain several new research and teaching positions in the fields relating, both directly and indirectly, to the floriculture business. Everyone members, non-members, growers, retailers and consumers benefits daily from these efforts. To keep our membership informed we publish a quarterly newsletter in which articles of current interest and lasting significance are published. A growers guide listing the items grown by each member is published annually so that everyone is aware of what is available and where it is located. Something also must be said about the mass exodus of growers from the north because of the cost of fuel. Georgia is an ideal location for these operations. By all that is predictable it is safe to speculate that within the next decade most of the plants consumed in the north will be grown in the south. Shipping costs may be going up but certainly not at the rate that the production costs of floriculture products will in the north. Think about the opportunities such a phenomenon will bring to our state. The question is will we be ready for it? Not unless we are organized and prepared to help direct the effort where it will do the most good. The GCFGA will be here to do its part. Happy gardening say it with flowers. Market Bulletin Generates SI 3 7 Million to Ga. Economy (Continued From Page 1] eluded all information on transactions that did not pertain to calendar year 1980. We could not record non-measurable responses ("a lot", "many", "many times"). The remaining responses enabled us to measure the value of 17,815 transactions. Tabulation of the reasons for subscribing to the MARKET BULLETIN proved more difficult. 84.4% used multiple responses, meaning most persons did not choose the one reason that best described why they subscribed. Rather than simply throw out these responses, we chose to tabulate two sets of data: one which identified the most important reason to those who chose only one response, and another which showed the distribution of choices among those who wrote in a choice or gave multiple responses. The reasons given by subscribers for taking the MARKET BULLETIN are indicated by the charts on this page and on page one. The survey's results suggest that the MARKET BULLETIN'S value to its readers is indeed multidimensional. The classified ads are of great dollar value to their uses both buyers and sellers. The range of interests expressed highlights the wide variety of readers, from urbanites, rural folk and farmers to gardeners, businessmen and housewives. DISTRIBUTION OF MULTIPLE RESPONSES Of those who listed multiple responses 76.3% listed advertising as im portant, recipes 76.0%, crop and livestock information 52.2%, agricultural organization news 47.6%, and the BULLETIN calendar 39.3%. Grandpa's Gar den, not listed on the survey form and relying solely on write-ins, influenced the choice of 25.6%, suggesting an even higher rate of acceptance had it been one of the printed choices. Other items written in included needlework 14.0%, Ag Consumer Line 10.0% and We Get Letters 5.2%.
