FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume67, Number'14 FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, April 8,1981 Agronomy Dept. Aids Producers The efforts of the Agronomy Department of the Cooperative Extension Service of the University of Georgia are dedicated to helping producers develop a profitable production program on more than five million acres of cropland, four million acres of pasture and hay land plus home gardens, urban lawns and similar areas. The final goal of all this effort is to enrich the lives of Georgia's people. The Agronomy Department is staffed with specialists in all major row, forage and turf crops produced in the state, along with scientists, specializing in fertilizer and seeds. The most important job of the Extension agronomist is to provide training and information for county Extension directors and (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. W.H. Sell, Head of the Extension Agronomy Department, University of Georgia College of Agriculture, Athens 30602.)________ agents. To improve production practices, field demonstrations, short courses, radio and television programs and news articles are planned. The specialists also assist the county staffs with special problems such as nutrient deficiencies and pesticide residue or injury situations that develop in row crop, forage and turf production. Extension and research agronomists cooperate in making variety and fertility recommendations for the Georgia farmer and often assist with classroom teaching in the College of Agriculture. The agronomists work closely with Commodity Commissions on Cotton, Soybeans, Tobacco and Peanuts. These commissions support many of the educational programs conducted by agronomists. They also have a close working relationship with agriindustry societies such as Georgia (Continued On Page 8} Reward Meat Quality and Safety The Georgia Horse Foundation is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of persons stealing horses in Georgia. If you have information about horse rustling, contact the Georgia Horse Foundation, 2600 Peachtree Road, NW, Atlanta 30305 or call 404/261-0612. QQ consumer line... Protected by Inspectors Judging the quality of good foods can be a confusing process, yet it is one of the most important decisions a consumer can make when shopping. To help the consumer resolve this problem, the Georgia Department of Agriculture along with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, inspect and grade foods, such as meat, and indicate their wholesomeness and quality with a stamp or seal. Livestock Judging Update and Clinic Consumers can rest assured that meat sold in Georgia has passed inspection by qualified state and fed- eral meat inspectors. Inspection involves examining the slaughter of animals for meat and processed meat products for resale. I need to get rid of bamboo reeds 15-18 feet high. Any suggestions? C.A. Screven Repeated cuttings at or near the ground will deplete its underground root reserves and should be effective. If necessary, apply dalapon according to directions. The enclosed literature describes its use. A clinic and update will be held, for those interested in judging junior livestock shows, April 16 in the Livestock Arena near the University of Georgia Coliseum in Athens. All herdsmen, agents, vo-ag teachers, and farm managers interested are urged to attend. For more information, contact Calvin Alford, Extension animal scientist, at 542-2328. Be Prepared When Tornados Strike; Learn and Follow Safety Rules Although there is really no true tornado season, April, May and June are big tornado months in Georgia. While tornados usually do not occur in winter months, they are technically possible anytime of the year. Statistics show that most tornados occur in the state between midday and 9 p.m. Genealogy Meeting Do-it-yourself family history researchers from the 50 states will converge in Atlanta May 7 through 9, to hear 60 of the nation's top genealogical research experts tell how to look up your ancestors at the meeting of the National Genealogical Society hosted by the Georgia Genealogical Society. The program has something for everyone from rank beginners to advanced professional researchers for many parts of the U.S., Great Britain, and Germany, according to Mrs. Edgar M. Lancaster, Shady Dale, GGS president. For more information about the program, call 404-478-2784. Tornados or "twisters" are nature's most violent windstorms. Although they have a short lifespan and relatively narrow path, they can leave a quick path of destruction and death. In nearly all cases, tornados move from southwest to northeast. They are usually observed as a funnel-shaped cloud, spinning rapidly and have a distinctive sound which has been compared to the sound made by several airplanes or trains. There are two general notices given by the U.S. Weather Bureau when a tornado is threatening a watch and a warning. A tornado watch indicates that the potential for tornado development and thunderstorms is strong. (Continued On Page 8) There are 109 meat inspectors with the Georgia Department of Agriculture and they are responsible for checking the wholesomeness of meat, plant sanitation and truth in labeling on processed meat products. Meat inspection is often confused with meat grading. Meat inspection is mandatory and is a government service while meat grading is voluntary and must be paid for by the packer or processor who requests it. Grading meat groups meats of similar quality. The advantage of plants having meat graded is that it gives a small plant the same competitive edge as a large plant. USDA grades for beef, veal, calf, and lamb are a guide to tenderness, juiciness, and flavor of meat. Only a small amount of pork is graded because quality characteristics fall into such a narrow range, it is not necessary. Most stores carry one or more of these three meat grades: Prime meat is the highest quality sold. Six percent of federally graded meat is prime. It is usually very tender, expensive, and hard to find since most of it is used in restaurants. Choice meat is the most popular grade and 87 percent of meat graded falls into this category. It is tender, juicy, flavorful and in greatest demand by the consumer. Good quality meat is not as tender as the other two grades, but usually has-less fat. Lower grades of meat include USDA standard, utility, cutter and canner and are mostly used in processed products.
