The organization consists of approximately 150 active members and is involved in sanctioning horse shows for non-member organizations throughout the state from Griffin to Rome. Rome. National is made up of 14 saddle clubs and organizations. To be a member of National, you must be a member of one of these clubs. National sponsors horse shows designed for amateur status riders for such organizations as the Heart Association, county 4-H clubs, the state 4-H Horse Show, and other saddle clubs. Our organization furnishes equipment such as timers, props, show sheets and will assist in putting on the shows we sanction. A fee is charged for these services and money goes back into sponsoring and the awards for qualifying shows we hold each year for our members. In 1980, National sanctioned 30 horse shows and we have already scheduled 24 open shows for 1981. National is one of eight associations who are members of the Georgia Federation of Saddle Clubs, the governing body for saddle clubs like ourselves. National holds three qualifying shows in May, June, and July, in order to select the best hor- (Continued On Page 16) Passed During Interest in Georgia's equine industry is booming. Horse farms, boarding facilities, wagon trains and shows have enjoyed tremendous growth and popularity in the last decade. In the MARKET BULLETIN ten years ago we published an average of 20 horse related ads each week. In today's paper, beginning on page 6 there are more than 250 ads reflecting the tremendous growth of the equine industry in Georgia. Wagon trains such as the Cher-a-Cobb scheduled for April 24-26 is a good example of the growing interest in equine activities. In anticipation of the Cher-a-Cobb event, Lisa Cole, David Queen, Danny Cole, Tryon Wilson, Aaron Carter, and Crissy Wilson take a test ride of one of the wagons which will be part of the wagon train. 1981 Session Several bills designed to strengthen Georgia's agriculture were passed during the recent session of the General Assembly. Three of the bills deal with grain dealers and warehousing of farm commodities: S.B. No. 152 increases the amount and method of calculating the bond coverage required of grain dealers. The minimum bond was increased from $5,000 to $10,000 with a maximum of $100,000. The bond shall be calculated in an amount equal to 20% of the average of the highest dollar volume of grain purchases made in any single month for each of the three preceding calendar years. S.B. No. 154 increases the minimum required bond of a commodity warehouseman from $5,000 to $10,000 with a maximum of $100,000. H.B. No. 184 provides that a commodity warehouseman shall issue an original receipt for agricultural products stored in the (Continued On Page 16) Apple Producers Vote on Commission Apple producers across the state must decide whether or not to reaffirm the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Apples for an additional three years. Referendum dates have been set for April 1 thru midnight April 30 by the commission. This referendum is being held in accordance with Georgia law requiring that Commodity Commissions be reaffirmed every three years. Apple producers will receive ballots by mail at the beginning of the 30day balloting period. If a qualified producer does not receive a ballot, that farmer can contact the Commodities Promotion Division, Georgia Department of Agriculture, 326 Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta 30334, telephone (404) 656-3678 and receive a ballot. To be reaffirmed, the Commissions must receive a two thirds favorable vote of those casting ballots in the referendum. Feed Horses According To Individual Needs For the average horseman, feed is the biggest cash outlay and makes up half of the expenditure in keeping a horse. This can vary depending on the type of facilities and other equipment used for your horse. Handicrafts Coming Soon The special handicraft edition of the MARKET BULLETIN will be published on April 15. Deadline for notices is April 8. Regulations for handicrafts will be relaxed to include ornamental and gift items not regularly published. All notices should include an affidavit stating that the item was made by the individual advertiser and not purchased for resale. Feeding a horse can be both a science and art. The science aspect is knowing the nutritional value of the feed and figuring out the proper ration amounts while considering the horse's size. The art consists of knowing what to feed, when to feed it, and the amount horses need to meet individual requirements based on the amount of work they perform. Horses differ more in temperament and feed requirements than other livestock. They tend to be more sensitive to feed quality, so rations containing dust, mold or decay should be avoided. A great variety of feeds may be used to satisfactorily meet the needs of horses. As a general rule, feed rations should be suitable and readily (Continued On Page 16) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN we letteu Dear Editor Years ago when my husband was a child, his mother had something called "healing squash." If you cut it, it grew back. Do any of your readers remember it and know how I could obtain some? Shirley Luke Route 2, Box 56A Screven, Ga. 31560 Dear Editor Two years ago I moved to a small lot in the city. The backyard is spacious enough for gardening but is cov- ered with ivy. If any of your readers have any suggestions for removing it, I'm ready for anything with the exception of harsh chemicals. KayVontillius 2583 Winding Lane Atlanta, Ga. 30319 Dear Editor I am new at quilting and need advice on how to keep quilt tops from puckering or not fitting right when putting them together. I am also looking for the "Dutch Boy" quilt pattern. Blanche Kennedy 97 Berry Ave. Newnan, Ga. 30263 Dear Editor: I would like to know if any of your readers could help me locate someone to service an old monogram machine. It is a Meistgram with an electronic beam. I have had the head overhauled and it is fine, but I need ^someone to syncronize the electronic part with the machine. I contacted the company, but it is discontinued. I would be grateful if anyone could help me. Mrs. W.L. Mealer 3370 Hicks Road Marietta, Ga. 30060 Dear Editor: Some time ago in the column "What Is" the plant goldenrod was featured. You stated that it was of little value, a weed, and could be used as an ornament. Goldenrod starts to bloom in August and will bloom and produce pollen and nectar until frost kills it. The pollen is gathered abundantly by bees and is very important in raising young bees and as a winter food for bees. Another use for goldenrod is that it will help control erosion. Please ask your readers not to destroy it, but protect it for our own benefit and well being. Charles N. Croft 21 Mackay Street Route 2 Brunswick, Ga. 31520 Dear Editor I wonder if any of your readers are old enough to remember a dish called "cush?" When I was a child, we had "cush" for Sunday dinner and it was something like chicken and dressing. Mrs. O.H.G. Boston, Ga. (Editor's Note: We published the following recipe for cush a couple of years back; Two cups of freshly made buttermilk cornbread should be fried in pork sausage or bacon fat, to which is added a medium sized chopped onion. Brown the mixture well; then pour in a pint of whole milk. Season with salt and pepper, bring to the boiling point, stirring J constantly to prevent scorching and serve sizzling hot with a pat of butter - Serves two.)
