FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume66, Numbers George Bi FFA - Preparing Youth for Progress National FFA week is February 16-23. Seventeen thousand members in Georgia join with almost 1/2 million across the nation in observance of this event. Our national FFA theme for 1980 is "Preparing for Progress." Being prepared, planning ahead and getting things off to a good start are a "way of life" in agriculture. Without this preparation, our bountiful agricultural production and thus the food for America and the world - might never be produced. Just what kind of track record for progress do we in agriculture and agribusiness have? Today, one hour of farm labor produces nearly nine times as much food and other crops as in 1920. Only (Our guest columnist this week is George W. Bird, III, State President, Georgia Association Future Farmers of America, Metter.) ten years ago, one farm worker produced enough food and fiber for about 30 people - today he produces enough for 57 people. This growth in productivity is the underlying factor in American agriculture's ability to provide $24 billion a year of agricultural exports. The people in agriculture know they need to be prepared with knowledge and skills like decision making, asking questions, finding answers, trying new methods, speaking and listening. This is what vocational agriculture education and the FFA is all about. It is preparing young men and women in high school vo ag classes with skill they will need for careers in agriculture such as horticulture, crops, livestock, agribusiness, marketing, sales, chemistry, taxes, law, mechanics, vet medicine, plant genetics, soil science, conservation, accounting, personnel management or landscaping. Add to this classroom instruction, the powerful learning-by-doing experiences and leadership development of the FFA, incentive awards from the agribusiness community, challenge by competition, committment to participate and a desire to succeed in the great American agriculture tradition. FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, February 20, 1980 Eugene Brown explains to Commissioner Irvin the conversion required to change a gasoline engine to burn alcohol. Changing the air to fuel ratio, adjusting the timing, and changing compression to allow it to burn alcohol more efficiently can make an alcohol-fueled car with minimal expense. Prospects for Alcohol Fuel Offer Encouragement for Energy Woes The search for an answer to relieving our country's dependence on foreign oil has resulted in a Georgia inventor converting a gasoline-powered car to efficiently run on alcohol. Spring Farmland The spring farmland edition will be published March 19. Deadline for this issue is March 5. All notices must be received in the MARKET BULLETIN in writing prior to this date. Notices are limited to 30 words. Please include county where land is located acreage and your name and address. Notices received without this information will not be published. The Future Farmers that emerge are prepared. Prepared to face the future. Prepared to lead America's agricultural industry. Prepared to be on the team to feed the world. Prepared to be somebody. "Prepared for Progress." Eugene Brown of Centerville responded to a request from Senator Herman Talmadge to find an alternate non-fossil fuel that would make our country fuel self-sufficient. The answer to the fuel problem, according to Brown, is alcohol, a fuel which can be readily produced in this country and used as a substitute for gasoline. The car Brown converted to test the effectiveness of alcohol as an alternate fuel was a 1979 fully equipped Ford with a 302 V8 engine. The car delivered 10 to 12 mpg in town and 15 mpg highway using alcohol. The alcohol car is practically pollution free which would reduce production costs since less pollution control equipment is required. "The oil industry says they can not meet our energy needs but I am confident that when the American public is aware of the potential of alcohol they will refuse to be intimi- (Continued On Page 8) Low Germination on Untreated Soybeans The State Seed Laboratory has reported receiving many soybean seed for germination testing that have disease organisms on the seed coat. This may reduce the germination from 10 to 30 percent. In many cases, farmers have sent in samples of their untreated seed for testing and then use a hopper box treatment at the time of planting. The laboratory germination on untreated seed can not be used as a guide for determining planting rates or field stands if the seed is treated when planted. If you plan to treat soybean seed at planting, treat seed before you send them to the Seed Lab for testing. The disease organisms in untreated seed can cause the germination report to vary from 20 to 40 percent. If you have already received a report where germination is between 40 and 7s percent, you may want to resubmit a sample after treating with fungicide for a new test. QQ consumer line... How long will canned foods keep? W. M. Thompson This will depend upon a number of factors such as the type of food canned, the processing, handling, and storage conditions. Generally speaking) if the can itself is normal in appearance, the food inside should still be wholesome. However, a regular turnover about once a year is suggested. When buying canned goods in the grocery store, (Continued On Page 8) Seed Samples Lost Ten to 15 seed samples received in the State Seed Laboratory Wednesday, February 13, 1980 were removed by the cleaning crew and placed in the trash. These samples had not been opened and assigned a laboratory number so the Lab has no way of knowing to whom the samples belonged. If you mailed samples a few days before this date and have not received an acknowledgement of receipt from the Department, contact the State Seed Laboratory, telephone 404/656-3635 to be sure your samples were received. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, February 20,1980 we ad letteu * -- ^ ** Dear Editor: Presently I have fire ant bites on both legs. I am writing this letter to convey a humorous thought con- cerning a sure fire ant cure. While the legislature is in session, I think Commis- sioner Irvin should request enough money to start a fire ant acclimatization and demonstration project. Here is the way it would work. First you get the money. Then you arrange for an acclimatization room to be installed at a suitable site. The room should be large enough to hold a dozen or so colonies of fire ants, and should have very precise temperature and humidity controls. Put the fire ants in the room and reduce the tempe- rature just a very little each fire ant generation until the fire ants are acclimatized to a temperature similar to that of Northern Virginia. Take some of the money and purchase two or three quarter acre plots around the Washington D.C. area. Put the fire ants on the plots with suitable signs de- scribing the demonstration that is taking place. I think these demonstration plots would be more effective toward controlling the fire ant than anything since Mirex was banned. It might take two or three years to get the "joy spread around" but results would come just as sure as death and taxes. Since this is an election year, if you have any diffi- culty getting sufficient money from the Georgia Le- gislature, why don't you try President Jimmy for a fe- deral grant for this demonstration. After all, the feds would be the primary recipient of this proposal, why not let them pay for it. Edgar L. Ph. 228-5935. eorgia Cooking Cherry Pie Whether or not George Washington really chopped down the cherry tree, February is a great time of year to enjoy a delicious, hot from the oven, cherry pie. Pastry for 9" double crust pie 2/3 cup plus 2 Tabfespoons 2 cups all-purpose flour shortening 1 teaspoon salt 4-5 Tabkspoons cold water Cut shortening into flour and salt until particles are size of small peas. Sprinkle in water, one Tablespoon at a time. Toss with fork until flour is moistened and pastry cleans side of bowl. Gather pastry into a ball. Divide in half. Roll one half out on lightly floured board until 2" larger than pie pan. Place in glass or dull-finish metal pie pan. Be careful not to stretch pastry. Trim edge 1/2" larger than pan. Roll other half to same size and fold in quarters. Make slits on seams so steam can escape. Set aside. Pre- pare filling*. "Cherry Filling 1 1/3 cups sugar 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 2 cans (16 ounce size) tart 1/4 teaspoon almond extract cherries drained 2 Tablespoons margarine or butter Heat oven to 425 degrees F. Mix sugar, flour, cherries, almond extract. Turn into pastry lined 9" pie plate. Dot with butter or margarine. Place top pastry over filling and unfold. Trim over hang- ing edge 1" from the edge of the plate. Fold top edge over bottom edge pressing to seal. Pinch edges (flute) for a decorative touch. Cover pastry edges with strip of aluminum foil to pre- vent excessive browning. Remove during the last 15 minutes. Bake cherry pie for 35-45 minutes or until crust is browned and juice begins to bubble through the slits in the crust. Scorecard for a perfect pastry 1) Appearance - Golden brown color; blistery surface; uniform attractive edges; fits pan well. 2) Tenderness - cuts easily with a table knife or fork, but holds shape when served. 3) Texture - flakes, layers throughout crust, crisp eating. 4) Flavor - pleasant, bland flavor to enhance filling. Up to World War II there were essentially two types of hogs the lard and bacon type hog. Yorkshires were bacon or lean meat animals with very little lard. Since the late 1940's, however, the emphasis has changed with all breeds trying to develop a more muscled, meaty animal. The modern Yorkshire hog has a very high percentage of lean in all major cuts with a small covering of outside fat. The quality of meat produced by the Yorkshires is excellent, winning many awards in livestock shows through the years. Characteristically, Yorkshires are not as heavy as. many swine breeds. The boar averages 700 pounds with sows averaging 600. The hogs are excellent foragers since they are very active and exercise a lot. Besides their high quality meat, one of the most desirable characteristics breeders find in Yorkshires is the ability to consistently produce large litters. The sows are known for their excellent mothering instincts and gentleness with their piglets which helps raise and wean most of their offspring. Like other white haired pigs, Yorkshires are sensitive to sunburn but not to the degree of Chester Whites. og consumer line... (Continued From Page 1) avoid leaking, bulging or severely dented cans. Brown sees alcohol as a solution and answer to many problems. Besides eliminating our country's dependence on foreign oil, Brown says that alcohol can reduce if not eliminate our balance of trade deficit which has resulted from the importation of foreign oils. "On October 1, 1973, the price of a barrel of oil was $3.01. Two weeks later, on October 16, the price had risen to $5.12 per barrel. By January 1974 the price was $11.65 and in January of 1980 the same barrel of oil that we paid $3.01 for seven years ago cost $33.00. Mr. Brown projects that we could provide at least 30 percent of our transportation fuel needs within five years by using alcohol. Within ten years, Brown projects, our nation should be able to export energy to foreign countries like Japan, Israel and Germany. In addition, Georgia stands to gain industry-wise by the production of alcohol says Brown. "Our's is the only state which has the abundant subterranean fresh water supply needed to support major alcohol distilleries. Georgia has all the necessary ingredients to make this state the primary area in the country for massive distillation operations. We have abundant water, sunshine, transportation and agriculture to produce the grains needed for the distillation process." Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin had an opportunity to test drive the alcohol-fueled car last week. He said the car had good pickup, was smooth running and any differences he saw in driving the alcohol powered car over the gasoline fueled vehicle were positive.
