FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 66, Number 45 P*. fl.lU. ?Mt Partners Help Ag Progress Farmers rely on businesses and businesses on farmers. And, today's consumers would be almost helpless without either one. Farm-City Week provides the opportunity for urban and rural people to come together and see how much each contributes to the welfare of the other. Farm-City Week will be observed throughout Georgia November 21 th- rough 27. Programs and activities during this special week will include organized luncheons, exhibits and tours of farms and industrial plants. Program information and local plans will be coordinated through the county offices of the Cooperative Extension Service. Today, farms are no longer selfsufficient little islands producing (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. J.W. Pou, Chairman, 1980 Farm-City Week and Assistant Director, Community and Rural Development, Cooperative Extension Service, University of Georgia, Athens 30602.) mainly for the people who live on them. Instead, they are an integral part of the total economy. Farmers purchase farm equipment, pesticides, fertilizers, credit, energy and vast amounts of other supplies and services from industry. Industry, on the other hand, buys the peanuts, pulpwood, cotton, grain, livestock, poultry and other products produced by the farmer. Farmers and non-farmers have become truly partners in progress with the activities of each contributing to the welfare of the other. Each year farmers add new wealth to the business community without depleting natural resources. During 1980, Georgia farmers again are producing agricultural products worth nearly $2.5 billion. They are using the same land they used last year. In fact, with good management, they can even improve the soil while farming it. Agriculture is Georgia's largest (Continued On Page 8) FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, November 19, 1980 Statistics Needed To Calculate Ga. Farm Position The 1980 end-of-year survey conducted by the Georgia Crop Reporting Service is underway. Because the 1980 crop season was one of the most adverse on record affecting virtually every commodity, early predictions indicate the dollar bss will far exceed that for any previous year. Thousands of Georgia farmers are being asked about their number of harvested acres, abandoned acres, production of crops, livestock numbers, poultry numbers, and farm labor and wages. Some producers will receive a questionnaire in the mail. Others will be visited by Georgia Crop Reporting Service representatives. After completing, the forms are forwarded to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service in Athens for processing. Reliable crop estimates are vital to agriculture America's biggest business. Many producers base their future decisions on the end-ofyear inventories published by the Georgia Crop Reporting Service and USDA. That is why the cooperation of thousands of farmers and ranchers is needed each year. Peanut Forecast Grim Following Record Drought The devastating summer drought has severely cut the production of peanuts, Georgia's number one cash crop, and officials predict it will take years to overcome the situation. According to George Whelchel, chairman of the Georgia Peanut Com- mission, "The situation has gone from bad to worse. We just hope to have enough peanuts to get by this year, but all we can do is look optimistically to Pigeon And Dove Show Set For Dec. 1 5 The annual all age, all breed show of the Greater Atlanta Pigeon and Dove Club has been scheduled December 6 and 7 at the Capital Airport Inn on Virginia Avenue in Atlanta. The two-day event begins Saturday, the 6th, and concludes Sunday afternoon. Deadline for entries is November 23, with an entry fee of $1.75 per bird. The public is invited to the show, which officials promise will be both entertaining and informative. Best time, they say, to view the birds is Sunday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. For further information contact Terry Cockrum, (404) 768-2040. Farmers also are worried about a seed supply for next year's crop, germination, dwindling supplies of peanuts for peanut products and the prospective closing of some peanut processing plants due to the peanut shortage. With about 98 percent of the Georgia crop harvested, USDA Federal State Inspection Service reports that 470,943 tons of peanuts have been processed compared to last year's harvest of 852,422 tons, down 48 percent. Georgia usually produces 44 percent of the total U.S. supply of peanuts. Shortages of peanut butter and other peanut products appear unavoidable, industry officials say. "This is the most serious situation ever faced in our industry," says Tyron Spearman, Coordinator for the Peanut Commission. "Farmers have already lost over $150 million because of the short production and (Continued On Page 8) Change In Direction Imperative For Farm Survival While Georgia's long-range agriculture outlook is "brilliant," the immediate need is survival, according to Cooperative Extension Service specialists who will be sharing efficiency strategies with farmery around the state. "The unusual combination of adverse weather, increased debt load and higher production costs are affecting even the best Georgia farmer," declared Dr. Tal DuVall, Extension Service Director in announcing what he describes as the most important series of workshops ever designed to reach the Georgia farmer. Meetings are planned for today {Nov. 19) at Rock Eagle 4-H Club Center, on Thursday (Nov. 20) at Georgia Southern College, Statesboro, and next Tuesday, (Nov. 25) at (Continued On Page 8) Agricultural experts discuss farm problems and possible solutions at a pAss conference in Atlanta. The press session outlined material to be covered during a series of statewide agricultural workshops.
