The newly formed Georgia Paso Fino Owners and Breeders Association is proud to join the ranks of the other fine Georgia horse groups. 
What was once the Atlantic Paso Fino Horse Association has recently 
I been rechartered to promote the Paso breed in a more efficient and centralized manner. As the breed has developed and grown here in j the USA, it has beI come more diffiI cult to operate an organization that covers most of the Eastern Seaboard, without encountering insurmountable problems. It is our hope to present the Paso Fino horse on a local state level,

making our information and activities concerning the breed more readily accessible. 
The Paso Fino is a very old breed of horse. Columbus brought the first strains to the New World in 1493. The Conquistadors set up remount stations throughout the Caribbean Islands, and utilized the Paso Fino to conquer Central and South America. 
Since introduction to the New World this naturally gaited horse has been refined and improved to become the most beautiful and smooth riding horse in the world. The name Paso Fino means "fine step or gait" in Spanish. 
There are three distinct strains that were imported to the USA in the 1960's: Columbian, Puerto Rican, and Peruvian. Dominican and Cuban strains were also brought here before importation become politically impossible. 
The breed is now evolving into the American Paso Fino as the successful crossing of the strains produces an animal of unequalled pride and quality.

If you have any reason to suspect the presence of aflatoxin in your feed corn, the Department of Agriculture has facilities to test corn for you. 
To sample corn, take a scoopful from several locations and at different depths in a bin or truck. Mix

Genealogy Meeting 
The September meeting of the Georgia Genealogical Society is scheduled for September 13 at the Atlanta Historical Society.

In 1979, approximately 10,000 head of cattle were sold through twelve Georgia teleauctions, averaging 67 head per lot. Estimated cattle weight ranged from 335 to 1,050 pounds and averaged 617 pounds per head. 
A Georgia feeder cattle teleauction typically begins with the sponsoring organization's gathering information about each lot of calves being offered for sale. The name, address and telephone number of each consignor is listed along with a description of his lot(s) of calves being sold.

Annie Ruth Mincey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Troy Mincey, Claxton, recently won top honors at State 4-H Congress in Atlanta. Annie Ruth's project area was Food Conservation and Safety and her topic was Georgia peaches. 
To be eligible for state competition, Annie Ruth had won previously on county and district levels. She will compete again at National 4-H 
 
wood. Green wood contains a large amount of moisture that must first be consumed by the fire before the log can begin to heat. 
Wood that is sufficiently dry will have bark that is cracked and shrinking. 
Wood should be stored off the ground ... perhaps on a 2x4 frame and shielded from the rain under a metal or plastic covering. 
Freshly cut wood should be allowed to cure in this manner for at least six months before use. 
When buying wood, even in ads from the MARKET BULLETIN, comparison shop before deciding on the best purchase. 
Firewood may be sold by the cord, the rick, or the truckload. A cord is a stack of wood eight feet long, four feet high and four feet wide.

Unsuccessful efforts to control rapidly spreading armyworms, mites and other foliage feeding insects with conventional insecticides has prompted Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin to issue a crisis exemption for the use of Lorsban 4E to control these pests. 
Irvin said the extended dry weather has allowed extremely heavy infestations of mites to accumulate in the state's peanut producing areas seriously jeopardizing that crop. Azodrin normally used has become ineffective. 
Cutworms and armyworms which are normally controlled with applications of Sevin dust are becoming unsusceptible to this pesticide. 
Irvin said Lorsban 4E may be applied at one to two pints per acre,

It's that time again. Summer ends, school begins, and you're back to packing lunches. There are a few tips for packing lunches which will help insure their wholesomeness and enjoyment. 
Handle food properly when preparing lunches. Proper handling means good sanitation, adequate cooking and refrigeration. 
Chill or freeze sandwiches made the night before. They should be safe to eat at lunch time at school or work, even if not refrigerated there. 
Sandwiches can be frozen the night before wrapped in foil. With care, foil may be reused as well as recycled. Omit lettuce or other greens unless chopped with filling. Wrap these separately. Add to sandwich at time of eating. 
Invest in a small thermos with a wide mouth. It can be used to carry such things as chili, sliced fresh fruit, crispy lettuce or coleslaw ... foods that might add variety to a packed lunch. 
Try to use leftover meats as sandwich fillers. For example, chicken salad made from leftover chicken or even a cold chicken leg might be a welcome change. 
Save small plastic tubs about 6-8 ounce size (soft margarine containers). The containers are good for carrying salad, puddings and fruit. 
Include raw vegetables. Children find them fun to eat and they have more vitamins than when you cook them. 
Keep desserts simple. Try fruit, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, peanuts, raisins, puddings and cookies. 
Prevent cut fruits from turning brown. If you are sending fresh fruit such as bananas, apple wedges or peach halves, dip the cut part of the fruit in any type of citrus juice such as lemon, orange or grapefruit juice, or you may use salted water or ascorbic acid powder. 
Include fruit more often. A piece of fruit will cost no more and usually less than packaged pies, potato chips, corn chips and other junk foods (especially for children). 
 
Beef Sandwich Filling 
 
1 cup cut-up cooked beef 2 Tablespoons finely chopped 
onion 1 TaMespoon lemon juice 1/2 Teaspoon salt 1/3 cup mayonnaise or sand 
dressing 
 
1 medium stalk celery, finely chopped (about 1/2 cup) 
2 Tablespoons sweet pickle relish. 
1/8 teaspoon pepper 
 
Mix all ingredients. Yields 1 1/2 cups filling, about 4 sandwiches.

Beat well all ingredients except oil. Add the oil very

remain. After about 1/4 cup of oil has been added, the 
 
rest can be added in somewhat larger amounts. Continue 
 
adding and beating the oil until all of it has been added. 
 
Keep in the refrigerator in tightly covered container. Can 
 
also be made in blender or food processor). 
 
Note: If the mixture does not get thick drop an egg yolk 
 
in a clean bowl and very slowly begin adding the mixture 
 
back to it. Be careful to beat in each addition completely 
 
before adding any more to it.

Teleauctions Offer New Ways

Along with terms and conditions of the sale, this information is mailed to prospective buyers who are encouraged to inspect calves prior to the sale. On sale day, buyers are connected via conference telephone call with the auctioneer. 
A member of the Georgia cooperative extension service as well as several sellers usually are included on the conference call. This allows for dialogue between buyers and sellers and includes an impartial observer to answer any questions about the calves being auctioned. 
Some producers desire to be "on hand" in case they decide to "no sale" their cattle. The sale begins, and each lot is sold to its highest bidder. 
Teleauctions allow producers to sell many cattle at one time. This increased marketing efficiency is reflected in higher prices being paid for these feeder cattle. A comparison with USDA published prices of feeder cattle sold through Georgia sale barns reveals that lots of steers sold through teleauctions in 1979 averaged $4.90 more per cwt. Lots of heifer calves, when sold through teleauctions, showed an advantage of $2.09 per cwt.

Buyers like the relatively large lots of uniform size, sex, and quality of cattle. This means they get cattle subjected to less cross-hauling, stress and exposure to disease. Furthermore, they can be assured of what preconditioning practices have been performed, eliminating the need for any double dosages.

sellers getting very nearly what their cattle are really worth. Also, this results in buyers' stating their preferences for cattle quality. 
Last year, for example, buyers signalled to sellers, through higher prices, their desire for lighter weight steer calves, sold in larger lots. Producers then can respond by providing this type product in the future. 
Teleauctions benefit large producers since large lots are more valuable to buyers. Furthermore, buyers usually send trucks to the farm to pick up the cattle often reducing marketing costs to producers.

It's time to work with your poinsettias if you want them to "bloom" for Christmas. Poinsettias can stay outside for a few more weeks but be sure to mist the foliage if it wilts during the late summer heat. Don't mist the leaves late in the day or the cooler nights will encourage disease. 
To make your poinsettia "bloom", it needs more hours of darkness than light. In late September or early October, your plant should be removed to an area where it will receive 14 to 15 hours of darkness and 9 to 10 hours light. If night temperatures average 65 degrees, you should have "blooms" by Christmas. 
The darkness required for the poinsettia must be absolute, no artificial light allowed, no shading, absolute dark. Put your plant in a seldom used closet, cover it with a box or black plastic bag. When the leaves begin to show color, the plant has had enough darkness and you can bring it out to normal surroundings and enjoy it's spectacular show.

After you have learned to make squares, if you add a curved line you have unlimited possibilities for quilt patterns. If you have a compass the work will be easy and accurate. Finding a curved object to use as a pattern, on the other hand, will cause variations in the pattern which may be difficult to piece. 
Fold a square of paper into the basic four patch design. Place the point of a compass on the edge of the paper where the crease extends, point A. (See diagram.) Draw a half 
circle with the compass. To complete the design, draw a half circle from each point. 
The orange peel design is most attractive when constructed with brightly colored cloth but will make a completely different impression with darker shades or blue or green. 
Wayne Young, Atlanta, is mighty proud of his gigantic tomato. His tomato [left] measures 17 1/2 inches in circumference, weighing one pound 14 ounces. Mr. Young says the original seed for his tomato came from a friend in Germany. The old variety tomato has a mild flavor, meaty center and slightly rough texture.

Remember, cubic measurement is determined by multiplying the length, by the width, by the height. 
Don't be fooled by such terminology as a "residential cord" or a "short cord". These terms have no standard measurement. The Weights and Measures Division of the State Department of Agriculture advise the only method to determine exactly what is being purchased is by careful measurement. 
Be sure the wood purchased is the proper length for your stove or fireplace, preferably a hard wood, and as dry as possible. 
For the greatest savings, cut your own wood. Consider buying a chain saw, but do not attempt to operate

The first day will be the conformation classes. Saturday morning will be devoted to the classic form of the Paso gait and the afternoon will bring the crowd pleasing costume, trail and versatility classes. There will be a wine glass demonstration which demonstrates the smoothness of the horse. 
Sunday the performance and pleasure classes will show the style, spirit, and enjoyability of the Paso horse. There will be an agility class, which demonstrates the versatility of the horse. 
The Paso owners and breeders are very proud of their breed and hope to make the Paso Fino horse known to all fellow Georgians.

Testing Planned 
For Better Bulls 
The Beef Cattle Improvement Advisory Committee of the Georgia Cattlemen's Association plans to initiate a bull testing program this fall. 
Bulls will be tested on winter grazing (irrigated) and silage on a cost per pound gain basis. The testing will be conducted on a producer's farm in south Georgia. 
Entries for the program must be received by September 15. Contact your local county extension agent for rules and regulations.
