FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agricu/fure Market Bulletin Volume66, Numbers FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, January 16, 1980 .. WcCulfrmgfc 1980's Outlook ForLivestock As we start a new decade, let's take a minute to evaluate the probable problems facing the livestock industry. To evaluate where we are going, it is useful to know where we have been. We started the 197p's with about 112 million beef animals, 12 mil- lion dairy cows, and some 67 million hogs in the United States. With these, we were supplying 113 pounds of beef, 66 pounds of pork, and all of the dairy products our population wanted. In 1979, our beef numbers had declined to 110 million, our dairy cows to about 10.8 million, and our hogs to (Our guest columnist this week is M. E. McCullough, Head of the Department of Animal Science, Georgia Experiment Station, University of Georgia, College of Agriculture, Experiment 30212.) _______ 60 million head. Despite these declines, meat and milk supplies were greater than in 1970 and consumer consumption had increased in beef. In short, the livestock industry is producing more food with fewer animals. The keys to the 80's lie in the reasons for the success in the 70's. The dairy industry is a remarkable example of technology in action. In 1979, the U.S. had less than half as many dairy cows as in 1924, yet it produced twice as much milk. The reasons are simple the present dairy industry is stable and uses new technology. Yet, the average dairy cow in the U. S. produces only 11,500 pounds of milk, while many herds average 16,000 - 22,000 pounds. We should have little difficulty in meeting the demand for milk in the 1980's by simply applying technology already at hand. The beef industry could benefit greatly from the stability enjoyed by the dairy industry. Maximum use of technology in breeding, management and herd health comes with programs that go on year after year. The beef industry will take maximum advantage of technology only (Continued On Page 8) Plant Blueberries Now For Best Results Later More than 663 million pounds of raw shelled peanuts were used in 1979 to meet increased peanut butter purchases across the nation. The figures reflect a 40 million pound jump over 1978. The gain in consumption is especially good news for Georgia growers who had a record peanut harvest year. The increase in peanut consumption is credited largely to a continuing cam- paign by the Georgia Peanut Commission to get consumers to buy and use more peanut butter, peanuts and peanut oil in their homes as well as developing new peanut interest for virtually every phase of the commercial food industry. Billions of the state's peanuts find their way to Albany where one of the nation's largest peanut butter plants is located. The Albany peanut butter plant is one of the many facilities regularly inspected by the Agriculture Department's Field Inspection Force. Inspector LaDon McDowell [r] talks with plant production manager Barry Blackwell. Keep Inconvenience to Minimum If Your Power Fails This Winter Winter weather in Georgia can range from minor inconviences to driving hazards and power outages. There are some preparations you can make just in case your area of-the state receives snow or ice in coming weeks. Garden Seminars Offered in Atlanta The Atlanta Botanical Garden is conducting a series of "Super Sundays" this winter with information on growing trees, shrubs and bird identification. The January 20th session will demonstrate pruning techniques on dwarf fruit trees, including plums, apples, peaches, figs and blueberries. The Sunday meetings will run through February 10. The programs are open to the public at no charge required. The Garden is located inside the Piedmont Park entrance at 17th street. For additional information call 876-5858. Have a power outage kit assembled where you can find it easily in the dark. Some things you might include are: flashlights, battery operated radio, extra batteries, manual can opener, candles, matches, fire extinguisher, first aid handbook and first aid kit. Freezer First Aide If the power goes off, open the refrigerator and freezer doors only when absolutely necessary. Left unopened, a full freezer will keep foods solidly frozen for about two days. The time your freezer will keep food frozen depends on: 1) the amount of food. A full freezer will stay cold many hours longer than a freezer only a quarter full. 2) the kind of food. A freezer full of meat will not (Continued On Page 8) If you have limited garden space but want to raise your own fruit, raising blueberries may be the answer to your problem. Blueberries are attractive shrubs besides producing abundant fruit and their care is relatively simple. With proper care a blueberry bush will produce some fruit the third year after it is transplanted. By the sixth year it can yield as much as 14 pints of fruit. This yield will continue to increase for several years until the plant reaches maturity. For many years blueberries were not suited to our climate but, with the development of the Rabbiteye blueberry varieties, this fruit has been successfully grown throughout Georgia. It is important to select more than one variety for cross pollination. Select two or more of: Tifblue, Climax, Woodard, Southland, (Continued On Page 8} QQ consumer line... We recently had an unfortunate accident with some fertilizer which our pet ate. Many of our friends were surprised as they also keep similar chemicals within easy reach. S.T. Atlanta It is very important that fertilizer or other products not intended for consumption be placed in a safe location. It is easy for children and pets, who cannot read warnings, to sample dangerous items. Please be careful and keep your home safe. **** J. Can you make a brand recommendation? J.B. Monroe No. The Department of Agriculture regulates the wholesomeness and sanitation of food products, but does not have jurisdiction over quality or flavor. We cannot make recommendations of one product over another or make value judgments on a product. PageS Your Power (Continued From Page 1) warm up as fast as a freezer full of baked goods. 3) the temperature of the foods. The colder the food, the longer it will stay frozen. Always keep your freezer at 0 degrees F. 4) the freezer itself. A wellinsulated freezer will keep foods frozen much longer than one with little insulation. 5) size of freezer. The larger the freezer, the longer the food will stay frozen. If partial thawing does occur, refreezing will reduce the quality of foods, especially fruits, vegetables and prepared foods. It is safe, however, to refreeze foods if they still contain ice crystals, or if they have not warmed above 40 degrees F. Exceptions would be ground meat, poultry and seafood. Do not refreeze these foods unless ice crystals are present. Cook these meats immediately after checking for changes in color, odor, etc. If in doubt, throw it out. Heating Helps Space heaters can be used safely with adequate ventilation. Gas fireplace logs are an excellent heating back up. It is not recommended that the gas range oven be used for room heating. Damage could be done to the oven thermostat. Heat only a small area by closing off other rooms. Tack up a heavy blanket or quilt to block doorways if the room doesn't have a door. (Next Week: Cooking Without Power, Food to Keep on Hand, Special Tips.) THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, January 16,1980 Blaeberries (Continued From Page 1) Delite, Bluebelle or Briteblue. January is the best time to trans- plant blueberries. Work up to 1/2 bushel of peat moss in each hole but do not use any agricultural lime. Blueberries require an acid soil. Also, transplanting time is not the time to fertilize. Space plants about eight feet apart but if you want to create a hedgerow effect plant the blueberries only four feet apart. Plant the blueberries about one inch deeper than the soil line indicates. Around the middle of March, apply 1/8 teaspoon iron chelate, available at most garden stores. Mulch the plants with pine needles or pine bark. After taking these measures, blueberries need little attention until the next growing season. Be sure to keep the weeds and grass away from the plants and prune only excessively long shoots by cutting them in half. At the beginning of the second growing season, you should apply two ounces azalea special high or- ganic fertilizer per plant. If additional nitrogen is needed use one ounce of acid-forming ammonium sulfate per plant. Be careful not to over-fertilize blueberries as they are easily damaged by fertilizer until they are estab- lished. You can double the amount of fer- tilizer recommended at the begin- ning of the third growing season. When rainfall is not adequate, water the plants. Blueberries are rarely attacked by pests but if you need to spray, your county agent or the Department of Agriculture can advise you regarding the method and treat- ment. Given this stability, our herd numbers should easily produce the needed meat. The greatest problem that the livestock industry may have in the future is to get a pricing level that will make the industries profitable. Hopefully, we will be able to keep the livestock industry under "free enterprise." If not, we may have to deal with government programs which will only serve to create both shortages and surpluses - both at a great expense to producers and consumers.
