Mrs. Canty's appointment was effective July 1. "We are extremely pleased to have an individual with Mrs. Canty's education and experience join our Department. I am confident her leadership will strengthen our Consumer Services Division," Commissioner Irvin said in making the announcement. Mrs. Canty, a former State Legislator and widowed mother of four, is an honor graduate of Johnson C. Smith University, with a Bachelor's degree in mathematics. She also holds a Master's degree in mathematics and education from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to her degrees, Mrs. Canty has studied at the Wharton School of Commerce and Finance where she worked on several consumer education projects. Mrs. Canty was elected to the General Assembly in 1975 while employed by the Community Services (Confirmed On Page 8] Many Georgia Growers The destructive Japanese beetle has arrived with lighter than usual popul- ations expected in central and south Georgia and heavy concentrations anti- cipated from greater Atlanta northward. During this time the foliage and fruit of most plants can Is meat required to have a date be protected against damage with printed on it? applications of Sevin. B.B. The condition of the food is also checked and any food that is not fit to eat will be pulled ven days, or as soon as the beetles begin to collect on the plants. If you have noticed one that does not, please let us know. A satisfactory Japanese beetle trap can be made with two empty milk jugs. Cut windows in one jug and fold flaps inside. These flaps prevent the beetles from flying back (Continued On Page 8) (Continued On Page 8) The new agricultural energy center in Tifton has several projects already underway hi an effort to find new ways for farmers to produce energy on the form. In the solar project energy from the sun is used to increase plant growth. Water heated by solar collectors is pumped into storage tanks inside the adjacent greenhouse. Left, technician Donald Tyson and researcher James Butler [background] inspect water-tight seals on the collectors. After collection the solar-heated water is stored in concrete block tanks that are waterproofed and insulated. Plants have shown increased growth when placed directly over the storage tanks. An insulated panel was removed for this photo. Butler and technician Jehu Walker [background] adjust an experimental solar-powered still used to produce alcohol fuel. Previous research indicates that 500 to 700 gallons of alcohol can be distilled from just one acre of sweet sorghum. Animal wastes also have a dual energy use according to Butler. Methane will be extracted from manure for use as fuel. The remaining material, having lost none of its plant nutrients, will be used as fertilizer. Page8 New Head (Continued From Page 1) Administration. As a member of the House, she served on the Retirement, Higher Education and State Planning and Community Affairs Committees. She also served as Vice-Chairman of State and Federal Relations Sub-Committee for two terms. Of her new position, Mrs. Canty comments, "Our office serves as a liason between the producer, the farming community and of course the consumer. Most of the public is not aware that this is the one Department in government that affects the quality of life of every citizen. "No one exists one day of their lives without partaking directly or indirectly of the services of the Department of Agriculture whether it is sitting at the dinner table, filling up your car with gas or going to the grocery store. "I hope this office will become a real link between all of the citizens of Georgia and the Department of Agriculture. I want the public to feel that if they need any information or have any questions that they can call us and we will assure them that they will receive a prompt response," Mrs. Canty continued. The Consumer Services Division has a special toll free consumer telephone line 1-80O-282-5852, to help consumers get service on complaints or obtain information. CANNED FRUIT Home canned fruit sometimes floats in the jar. The reason, according to Extension Service home economists, could be because the pack is too loose or the syrup too heavy. Or, some air may remain in the fruit tissues after heating and processing. THE MARKET BULLETIN Beetle Problems (Continued From Page 1) out of the trap. In a bag made of cheesecloth or similar material, place three or four tablespoons lure and attach bag to the top of the inverted milk jug in which windows have been cut. Remove screw lids from jugs and connect necks with tape. You can make a homemade lure from overripe fruit such as grape or cherries or you can use the commercial sex attractant lure available in most garden stores. This commercial lure is very effective. Suspend trap from a tree limb away from vegetable or flower gardens. Beetles will fly into top part of trap and drop into bottom jug. When full, remove bottom jug and pour beetles in mixture of hot water and kerosene to destroy. Where beetles are abundant, traps may catch large numbers without reducing the plant damage. Taking this into consideration, a combination of spraying and traps may be necessary for satisfactory control. Beetles spend about ten months in the ground as grubs feeding on roots of plants or grasses. During this period, a long term natural control through milky spore disease, can be applied. It kills the grub after causing the normally clear blood to become milky in appearance. Milky spore disease is harmless to humans and animals. It is available from garden shops or feed and seed stores and may be applied any time the ground is not frozen. QQ consumer line... (Continued From Page 1) What can I use to spray my house for termites? R.J. LaGrange Treatment for termites requires more than spraying, many pesti cides needed are not generally available. We have mailed you a sheet which answers some of the more commonly asked questions about exterminator contracts and suggest you contact several for free estimates. I saw some butter in the store without a date. Is that allowed? B.C. Mableton Yes, it is permitted. Butter is not required to have a pull date. Where can I get information on grain prices? R. M. Dublin Dial the Commodity Market News, a 24-hour toll-free service provided by the Georgia Department of Agri culture at 1-800-282-5944. It gives up-to-the-minute prices of agricultu ral commodities including corn, wheat, oats, livestock, poultry and soybean complex, traded on the Chi cago Commodity Exchange. Cotton prices are from the New York Stock Exchange. Georgia elevator grain cash prices also are quoted daily.
