FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 66, Number 2 Metro Farm Club Benefits Many In the midst of downtown Atlanta every month a group of people interested in agriculture gather for a discussion of some subject relating to farming. The Atlanta Farmers Club's main function is one of communications. It is a forum for the presentation and discussion of agricultural subjects. Recent programs have included: a Georgia Tech professor talking on new developments in solar energy, the president of the Georgia Farm Bureau, a staff member of the U.S. Department of Agriculture who participated in the recent negotiations on international trade in farm commodities, and a member of the Board of Directors from the Council (Our guest columnist this week is Charles P. Ellirrgton, President, Atlanta Farmers Club, 2801 Buford Hwy., NE, Suite 401, Atlanta 30329.)______________ for Agricultural Science and Technology. The Club takes a couple of field trips each year to visit an Experiment Station of the University of Georgia or some farm of special interest. Among the members are farmers as well as members of the banking and finance community, agribusiness representatives, members of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, faculty and staff members from the University of Georgia, representatives from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the State Department of Education. Practicing entomologists, agronomists, foresters and home economists are also among the membership. Most have a farm background and a large number are still actively engaged in farming. They are all interested in Georgia agriculture and in better relations between rural and urban people. So, while Atlanta is the seat of a great many activities in business, government, professional sports, transportation and entertainment, there is a very active group who remembers our agricultural heritage. Remember the old saying that you can take a boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy. PageS What to Stfttnteictcie? When the embargo* on cattle from European countries was lifted in the late 1960's, one of the breeds introduced to the United States was the rugged Simmental. This large breed of rugged red and white cattle, usually with a white face and frequently as spotted as Guernseys, were considered the most populous and widespread in Europe. The Simmental originated in the Semme Valley of Switzerland, where they were used for both milk and meat. Many of the first bulls available through artificial insemination in the U.S. were from dams with milk production records of 10,000 to 15,000 pounds per year. From the Semme Valley this breed spread to virtually all European livestock producing areas, with local breed names assigned in different countries. According to James Deal, President of the Georgia Simmental Association, the Simmental quickly established its worth in crossbreeding programs. This crossbreeding accounts for calves 100 to 150 pounds heavier at weaning. It is not unusual for calves to wean at 600 pounds or more. "While Simmental steers are extremely growthy and are highly desirable in the feedlot, it is the maternal traits of the Simmental that offer the greatest profit potential for the livestock producer," says Mr. Deal. "Simmental cows are excellent milk producers, hence provide large quantities of milk for the growing calf." Simmentals thrive in virtually all climates and produce carcasses highly prized by the meat packer. Generally there is more lean meat and less excess fat on Simmental carcasses than some of the other breeds according to President Deal. In Georgia an active Simmental Association has been in operation for 10 years. For more information write Mrs. Bobby G. Pitts, Secretary, Georgia Simmental Association, 1079 Campbell Road, Lawrenceville 30245. The address for the American Simmental Association is 1 Simmental Way, Bozeman, Montana 59715. * Embargo imposed on cattle from countries where hoof and mouth disease were known to exist. There are basic fundamentals to consider when purchasing and operating a chain saw. The Product Safety Commission advises that features including a "chain brake, guide bar tip guard, chains designed to reduce kickback and special cushioning to reduce vibration" are desirable in a chain saw. Safety tips for chain saw use include: Clear the area of anything which could come in contact with the tip of the guide bar while cutting. Hold the saw with both hands, with both feet on a firm surface. Be sure controls are positioned to avoid sudden start-ups at high speeds. On electric saws, the switch should be off before being plugged in. Never start a saw where it was fueled. Fire could result. While operating, wear protective gear such as rough-soled shoes, close-fitting clothes that won't catch in the chain, goggles, ear protection and a helmet. Stand so that the saw will not strike the body after going through the cut. Keep the saw below shoulder height where it is easier to control. Never allow children to run the saw or the saw to run unattended. On gasoline models, don't add fuel to hot or running engines fire could result. These safety suggestions are strongly recommended by the Chain Saw Manufacturers Association, the U.S. Product Safety Commission and the insurance industry. There is a wealth of information available on every aspect of buying, operating and caring for a chain saw. Most dealers are eager to provide this' information. Additional facts are available from the Product Safety Commission's toll-free "Hotline", 800638-8326.
