Marketing Onions Brings Wood Industry Moves South "Seen from almost any viewpoint, prospects for southern forest farmers are brighter now than ever before," writes Thomas P. Clephane, vice president, Morgan Stanley & Company, New York City investment bankers, in the 1980 Forest Farmer Manual just issued. The Manual is a 200-page guidebook for timber growers, edited pri- marily for the private, individual owner, which is published periodically by Forest Farmers Association, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. The association is a unique grassroots organization of timberland owners, and mainly small owners, in (Our guest columnist this week is J. It was established in Valdosta in 1941 and is the only organization of its type in the United States. Forest Farmers Association has increasingly come to be recognized as the voice of southern timber growers and currently has a membership of 2500, representing owners of some 40 million acres. Nevertheless, small-to mediumsized, nonindustrial owners continue to make up the vast majority of its members. They are the backbone of the organization. The association seeks to encourage better management of southern forest lands through educational and legislative activity. Its highly respected FOREST FARMER magazine, issued 10 times a year, is the centerpiece of its education program. The magazine features how-to-doit articles for timber growers on such subjects as techniques of growing and harvesting timber crops, while offering timely information on market conditions, sources of professional assistance, tax matters, forestry incentives programs, etc. Forest Farmer Manual is issued as a special edition of the magazine, but may be purchased separately by non-members. The 1980 edition is available at $12.50, which includes (Continued on Page 8) I bought a side of beef from the grocery store. I-8OO-282-5852 W\ud When you see a young seedling cut off at the soil line, don't assume that some bunny rabbit has been nibbling in your garden it was probably cutworms. Cutworms are ugly to look at, and to touch and they do ugly things to the garden. They are plump, soft-bodied larvae with a dull color and a few coarse bristles. Later in the year they develop into night-flying moths. Since cutworms attack just about every plant in the garden it depends on the size of the plant as to whether the damage is severe. If cutworms attack a young seedling, more than likely they will chew right through the stem. On larger plants, serious damage is done by destroying foliage. There are several ways to discourage cutworms in your garden. You can spray with Sevin or apply Toxaphene in granular or spray form. If your infestation is not so severe, you can scratch up the soil near your plants and hand pick out the buggers or you can try one of several home remedies. One of the most popular is "collaring" your plants with a three Many Growers Together It's almost time for those delicious Georgia onions to arrive at the market, This year there will be fewer labels and less confusion as to who grew the Georgia delicacy. Onion growers from Tattnall, Toombs, Montgomery and Wheeler counties have combined forces to market their products under the Vid- alia Onion Growers and Distributors Association label. In years past confusion has arisen due to the Vidalia onion vs. the Glen- nville onion vs. the Tattnall county onion, etc. With competition for the sweet onion market increasing from Texas and Mexico, the growers are placing less emphasis on who in Georgia grew the onion - just that it was grown in Georgia. Since onions are grown in other counties besides those listed above, Special Handicraft if the onion is not marketed under the seal at left, it will bear the name of the Georgia producer or the Sweet The special handicraft edition will be published May 21. The 1980 edition covers how to become a tree farmer, opportunities for forest farming in the South, how to take ad vantage of timber capital gains treatment, pine plantation manage ment, etc. It also includes informa tion on tree seedlings available from state nurseries, their cost and how to order them; where the owner can get assistance and advice; trends in forest product prices; and wood's role in the energy crisis. Mr. Clephane writing in the 1980 Manual adds, "The South is rapidly emerging as the timbergrowing and processing center of the nation. The shift is clearly borne out by figures showing that the re gion has the country's fastest growth in the three major forest products: plywood, lumber and paper. Forest farmers in the South can rightfully interpret this increased production to mean that timber value in the re gion is going to climb rapidly." Fin ally, he observes that commercial forests in the West have been dras tically overcut and as a consequence forest industry is rapidly moving South. Of course, with Georgia as one of the principle timber growing areas, the state's forest farmers should be among the main beneficiaries. For est Farmers Association is proud to play an important role in the con tinued development of Georgia's and the region's forest development. Mrs. D. A. Howard, Jr., who heads up the cemetery committee of tiie Georgia Genealogical Society, uses chalk dust to clarify name and other information on a tune-worn grave marker.
