FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy frvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 66, Number 13 Dawd Equine Board Ready to Help The Equine Advisory Board of the Georgia Department of Agriculture was established by Commissioner Tommy Irvin on February 2, 1972. Commissioner Irvin had realized for a long time that the equine industry was a vital link in Georgia's agribusiness community but lacked a unified voice speaking for the entire industry. The Board meets at the Department of Agriculture bimonthly. With the assistance and effort of many members of the Department of Agriculture, the Board has achieved (Our guest columnist this week is J. David Chesnut, Chairman, Equine Advisory Board, 6485 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, Doroville, Georgia 30360.)__________ significant accomplishments in the field of expanded trails within state parks, improved facilities at Stone Mountain Park, improved facilities at the School of Veterinary Medicine, in the fields of research and treatment and an increased awareness of many legislators of the vital roll the equine industry plays in the agri-economy of Georgia. The Board has worked hi cooperation with the State Parks Department (now the Department of Natural Resources) to establish trails and stabling areas in many state parks for the use of persons who would prefer to view our bountiful natural beauty from horseback. We have worked with the Department of Transportation, the State Patrol and the state veterinarian hi preventing the spread of equine infectious anemia through continuous monitoring of those known carriers of this disease within the state. We have worked with the House and Senate Agriculture committees to provide equipment needed for the treatment of equine diseases and disorders at the veterinarian school in Athens and we continue to support and work for the establishment of a line item budget in the Board of Regents budgeting process for the teaching hospital at the University of Georgia School of Medicine. Should you or any organization concerned with the equine industry in Georgia desire to be heard by the Board, or if you have any suggestions for the improvement of the equine industry within the state, the Equine Advisory Board would appreciate hearing from you. FOR SUBSCRIPTION ANRADVERTISEAAENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, April 2,1980 Healthy Plants Available Despite Blue Mold Threat C. L. Fain, Jr., was honored recently as "Horseman of the Year" by the Southeastern Charity horse show. He was selected for his "long and outstand- ing contributions to the saddle horse industry in the southeast." A plaque signaling the honor was presented jointly by Jim Ruwoldt [I], Charity Show manager and Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin [r] during the equine event at Stone Mountain. A good supply of disease-free tobacco plants are available in Georgia to transplant for this year's flue cured crop without importing questionable plants from out-ofstate, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. The Commissioner said reports of widespread blue mold infections throughout Georgia tobacco plant beds are unfounded. Although some blue mold has been discovered, indications are it is being held under control and the prospects for an adequate supply of Georgia plants appear good at this time. The Commissioner said tobacco plants may be brought in from out-ofstate "under certification", whereby the state of origin inspection system indicates they are free of disease. (Continued On Page 15) Work in Peach Research Recognized by Industry Dr. Curtis Jackson has been recognized by Georgia peach growers for his coordination of research leading to solutions to a major crop disease problem in the state's peach industry. Dr. Jackson, an associate director of the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Stations and the resident director of the Georgia Experiment Station near Griffin, received a special appreciation award for his work on the "peach tree short life" disease. Millions of trees were lost in the 1960s and early 1970s because of the peach tree short life disease, also known as "peach decline." This widespread devastation prompted researchers to study the cause of the problem and to develop control procedures. Jackson is also credited with guiding the formation of the S-97 Regional Project for development of improved peach rootstock, an important component of the control program. Fly-by-Night Exterminators On the Crawl During Spring This is the time of year when two different types of pests swarm in Geor- gia the termite and the unscrupulous termite exterminator. Last year more than 69 million dollars was spent in the state for termite control and structural damage. No doubt the "fly-by-night" exterminators got their hands on some of that money and will be out there again this year trying the swindle. Most pest control companies in og consumer line... I raise a breed known as the English Large Black which were imported from England into Canadainto the U.S. These hogs resemble the Landrace in that they are solid black with a fine coat of hair. They have a flop ear, mature at an early age and grow to be large hogs weighing 800 to 900 pounds at maturity. They are very good mothers, have been known to have large litters of 12 and are heavy milkers. The sows are noted to be very popular in England and Canada for crossbreeding with Landrace, Yorkshire or English White boars to produce what is known there as a blue spotted hybrid. Wiley G. Dam pier Route 1, Box 492 Valdosta, Ga. 31601. Dear Editor: I would like to contact anyone who has the seed or plant of the Laurus Nobilis member of the Laurel family Bay Tree, the leaves of which are used for seasoning. They are native of Greece and will grow in the U.S. as a shrub. Jerry H. Johnson 2881 Graham Road Macon, Georgia 31211 Dear Editor: In response to Mr. Hart's letter to the editor of Feb- ruary 20, I think his solution to the fire ant problem is very humorous, but I have another solution. I have stomped around many areas of south Georgia and coastal South Carolina where the fire ant has become a major problem. I have noticed also that since landowners have logged and drained much of the land the fire ant has increased its territory. Over the past five years I have seen the fire ant move into places that previously had been very moist pine and hardwood forest. After drainage ditches and canals were dug the water table was lowered to such an extent that it was made suitable for the fine ant. I suggest to most farmers and land owners that have a fire ant problem, to once again flood the land and raise the water table and the fire ant will be no more. Many species of trees will be thankful too. Dennis W. Herman 800CherokeeAve.,S.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30315 Dear Editor: Do you know of any business in Georgia that sells Dor- meyer mixers? My mixer is in perfect condition but the beaters are worn out, therefore making it useless. I would appreciate this information. Mrs. Jack Godfrey Route 4, Box 213 Boxley, Georgia 31513 (Editor's note: Readers, can you help?) IN HOT WATER DRIED FLOWERS The second largest energy user in the typical home is the hot water heater, so it provides a "great opportunity" to save on energy. A simple thing like taking a shower instead of a tub bath will help. Extension Service specialists have figured out that the average shower uses about 10 gallons of water, while the average tub bath takes almost 20 gallons. Lingering hi the shower, however, will send your energy saving right down the drain. Why not try your hand at drying plants at home? Mary Lewis of the Atkinson County Extension Service says there are almost 100 wild and cultivated plants suitable for drying. They include Queen Anne's lace, cattail, milkweed, goldenrod, sumac, ferns, pussy willow, rabbit tobacco, holly, cockscomb, peach blossoms, corn tassels, dogwood and okra pods. Gather plants just as they reach maturity and start drying them immediately. Farm employment No comfaercial, industrial or domestic employment permitted.
